Tag on outside of wrapper states: "Bob Dylan - 30 New Recordings." Neither the front nor the back of the package state that this 3 CD set is Dylan singing old American Classics. It's a re-hash of Rod Stewart's "Great American Songbook." Has Dylan become that desperate for dough? Major disappointment - I was expecting 30 new recordings of Dylan singing Dylan compositions. Save your money and just re-listen to your old Rod Stewart CDs of the same songs. Dylan has nothing new to add to these classics. Had I been following his career more closely, guess I would have known what he was up to here.

More standard covers for the Dylan diehards.

I am a Dylan fan of sorts, but I think the "standard issues" he has grown fond of lately, are starting to grow a bit stale. I personally yearn for another "original" material Dylan album, but I suppose these covers albums he's releasing nowadays, will simply have to do until he gets around to it. Hopefully he has another "Time Out Of Mind" or "Love & Theft" left in him, as I was a little disappointed in the last few original albums, "Tempest", and "Together Through Life" respectively. But, I would truthfully only recommend this new "Triplicate", three disc package, to the diehard Dylan fans. Like me.

Dylan does it again with a release of American songbook standards. This isn't Rod Stewart or Paul McCartney or whoever else in the Rock and Roll as of late covering the old songs our parents and grandparents grew up with. This is Bob Dylan and his band. The key being "and his band", nothing elaborate, just his small four or five piece band taking on the task of what, traditionally, is covered by a full orchestra. Bob's previous two single-disc albums, Shadows in the Night and Fallen Angels, are the prelude to this three-disc set, Triplicate.

Some Dylan fans have been less than thrilled by his recent albums of American songbook covers, but I am not one of them. I see them as an opportunity for him to recharge his creative battery, much like he did with his two albums of folk covers in the early 1990s. While this album is pretty strong in its own right (and features some good Bob vocalizing), I suspect that when he gets back to working on some original material, we'll be in for a treat. It's 2017, and Bob is going to be 76 next month. I'm thankful that he's still doing what he does.

As a Bob Dylan fan I was bound to purchase this and enjoy it a little. I didn't expect it to be better than I thought it would be though. There's singing on this that makes you forget some of his more recent live shows (if you listen), but in the end this is something for fans and collectors. Will people see this and pick it up thinking it's going to be great? Probably not. But enjoy it for what it is, an artist putting a more unique spin on the American songbook than other classic rock artists of late. Some parts are dang near emotional.

Is this for everyone? Nope. For fans of Dylan it might not even be worth picking up. I, however, have enjoyed hearing Dylan go back to really trying to use his voice and interpreting someone else's material. There are some real gems on here. Certainly not "There's a Flaw...," but every now and then there's an interesting and emotional performance that you don't often get with his more recent original work.

If you are a true Dylan enthusiast, then you will want to purchase his latest 3 disc box set entitled "Triplicate." The Noble Prize winning singer/songwriter has put together his largest set of new recordings. It consists of tunes from the great American songbook that were previously recorded by Frank Sinatra It is reasonably priced at Best Buy for a Bob Dylan fan or anyone that enjoys the "old standards."

Dylan Lacks Voice for Interpreting Standards

Although the arrangements are very good and Dean Parks' guitar playing is outstanding, Dylan simply does not have the voice for interpreting American standards. Dylan's strength has been his writing. No songs on this three disc set are written by him. If you want a current CD with interpretations of American Standards, go with Diana Krall's latest.
