Truck Turner [WS]/Hammer [P&S] [2 Discs] [DVD]

Two well-remembered blaxploitation movies from the 1970s ride again in this "Soul Cinema Double Feature" two-DVD set from MGM. Truck Turner has been transferred to disc in its original widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1, letterboxed on conventional televisions and enhanced for anamorphic playback on 16:9 monitors, while Hammer appears in a pan-and-scan edition reduced to the traditional TV format of 1.33:1. Both features have been taken from clean looking prints and look strong and colorful. The audio for both movies has been mastered in Dolby Digital Stereo, retaining the original monophonic sound mixes, and they sound fine for the period but not outstanding, with a slight harshness in the high end. Both pictures are in English, with no multiple spoken language options; Truck Turner includes optional subtitles in French and Spanish, while Hammer has optional subtitles in English, French and Spanish. No bonus features are included outside of trailers for the two films. Truck Turner and Hammer have previously been released on DVD and this twin-set simply recycles the discs released in 2001 in a new package, but they still look good and have been given a two-for-one price, making them worth a look for fans of 70s grindhouse fare.

Synopsis

Truck Turner
Isaac Hayes puts his gun where his groove is in his role as hard-case bounty hunter Mack "Truck" Turner, three years after composing the legendary score for Shaft (1971). Ex-football star turned skip-tracer, Turner specializes in bringing in the criminals police are too scared to chase, and when he's hired to capture sociopathic pimp Gator (Paul Harris), he finds himself confronted by the most vicious killers in the underground scene. Little does Turner know that Gator's woman, Dorinda (Nichelle Nichols), has a deep-running cold streak of vengeance, and has hired ruthless hit man Harvard Blue (Yaphet Kotto), as well as a legion of other like-minded and equally determined assassins, to snuff out Truck's supercharged motor once and for all. It's now up to Truck to keep his cool long enough to get to the source of the seemingly endless stream of bullets that come at increasingly unsettling intervals. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Hammer
A man who fights his way to success learns the people who helped him may be his biggest enemies in this action drama. B.J. Hammer (Fred Williamson) is a dock worker who used to box in the Golden Gloves and still knows how to handle himself in a fight; when he gets into a brawl at work, he's seen in action by an associate of Davis (Bernie Hamilton), a flashy businessman who manages boxers. Davis thinks Hammer has potential, and offers him a contract. Soon Hammer is training with Professor (Mel Stewart, an experienced boxing coach, and begins romancing Lois (Vonetta McGee), one of Davis's secretaries. After easily winning several fights, Hammer's career is on the rise and he seems poised to become a championship contender. But Davis isn't just interested in boxing; he's an underworld kingpin who also traffics in drugs and prostitutes, and often uses washed-up fighters as pawns in his criminal games. Hammer soon learns just how Davis operates when his manager orders him to take a dive in an upcoming fight, and when Hammer refuses, both he and Lois could face deadly retribution. Also starring William Smith and D'Urville Martin, Hammer was a major box-office success that established Fred Williamson as one of the major stars of the 1970s blaxploitation boom; the film also included an original score from soul music legend Solomon Burke. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
