    Synopsis

    True Grit
Fourteen-year-old Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) joins an aging U.S. marshal (Jeff Bridges) and another lawman (Matt Damon) in tracking her father's killer into hostile Indian territory in Joel and Ethan Coen's adaptation of Charles Portis' original novel. Sticking more closely to the source material than the 1969 feature adaptation starring Western icon John Wayne, the Coens' True Grit tells the story from the young girl's perspective, and re-teams the celebrated filmmaking duo with their No Country for Old Men producing partner Scott Rudin. Josh Brolin and Barry Pepper co-star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

When I catch the original True Grit starring John Wayne on Sunday afternoon TV, I can't help put down the remote, tune in and watch with delight. A true classic, the Cohen Brothers must feel the same way as they made a shot for shot remake of the brilliant film updating it and making it more edgy. Jeff Bridges takes on the role of Rooster Cogburn and redefines it with such vigor and method acting realness . . . you can practically smell his whiskey and tobacco soaked breath coming off the screen. This updated version if my new favorite and I've watched it dozens of times already. It's worth checking out if you love westerns or are a fan of the Cohen Brothers films (O' Brother Where Art Thou, Fargo, Inside Llewyn Davis) and you gotta realize, this movie's so good . . . they made it twice.

Overall, I consider this to be a 'better' movie than the original version with John Wayne. And let's face it: To review this movie, you must compare the two. However, I still like the original better. How can one compete with The Duke (whose Oscar was well-deserved, by the way)? Bridges did a fantastic job as Cogburn; I don't think anyone else could've pulled that off. In fact, the entire cast, with the exception of Bridges (and it's a shame to state it like this) was either equal to (Hailee Steinfeld, Barry Pepper) or better than (Matt Damon, Josh Brolin) those who played the roles in the 1969 version. But Wayne makes the difference. Bridges had much to live up to, and he pulls it off brilliantly.

This movie is a must see! Great movie all the way through! One of my all time favorites! ......older folks always say , "oh its not as good as the original" Well sorry but yes they are, and usually always better, another example is 310 to Yuma. Just because you have memories from 1947 when you were a young boy walking 17 miles to the bus stop, watching a tiny wooden black and white tv, doesn't mean the original was better. The characters acting action , pretty much everything is so much better now then it was a hundred years ago! .....This movie is a MUST and absolutely deserves to be in everyone's collection right next to 310 to Yuma! GO BUY IT! you will not regret it!

The Coens display admirable grit in remaking the John Wayne classic! Let me first clarify that I have NOT seen that film, although newcomer Hailee Steinfeld is magnificent among a cast filled with other outstanding performances! I love the Coen brothers' works, and this one is no exception: superb script, well-choreographed action, great acting, and a haunting spiritual subtext that sticks with you. Whether or not you've seen the original, this is a true masterpiece!

The new version is not the same movie as John Wayne's. Don't compare the two. The story line's are similar, but that's it. This new version is a whole new story than the one written for John Wayne. This is a great movie, with truly great acting for all involved. The 1969 movie was driven fully by Rooster Cogburn. This 2010 version is truly driven by Mattie Ross. The performances by Stienfeld, Bridges, and Damon shine. I would have liked to have seen Stienfeld and Damon against John Wayne. Bridges was terrific as Cogburn. The story was far better than I imagined it could have been.

This movie rises above other 'remakes' thanks to amazing performances by Jeff Bridges & co. and the Coens' leadership. This is a great movie for anyone who loves westerns, Jeff Bridges and/or good solid movies. Just beware that if you're a fan of the original John Wayne version, this is definitely not that. Go in expecting a quality movie with a 'different' take on Rooster Cogburn by Jeff Bridges and you'll be glad you did. Also, good-looking quality steelbook.

If you have read Charles Portis's book and were hoping for a faithful adaptation this is it. The acting is top drawer, the casting terrific, the texture and the overall feeling of this film draw you into the story the way it was meant to be told. This isn't for your average teenager who is looking for Hollywood slick action films, it's a thoughtful, well put together movie to lose yourself in.

We are die hard fans of the old true grit and this production is very different. But, it is still a cool movie, just take for what it is and don't try to compare it to the Duke's. We thought the acting was good and the action equally. some scenes are gruesome so be careful with young children. We are sure there is a lot of language but we use an editing dvd player so it cut that stuff out for us.
