Synopsis

True Romance
Quentin Tarantino scripted this wild and wooly blend of action and dark comedy, which reached theaters a year before his breakthrough hit Pulp Fiction. Clarence Worley (Christian Slater) is a well-meaning but socially unskilled comic-shop clerk whose idea of a big night out is catching a Sonny Chiba triple-feature at a downtown grindhouse. Clarence is celebrating his birthday in just such a manner when he meets a beautiful girl named Alabama (Patricia Arquette), and it's love at first sight for both of them. Clarence's enthusiasm isn't dampened much when he discovers Alabama is actually a prostitute who was paid by his boss to bump into him; she's only been in the business for a few days, and is more than eager to give up streetwalking to be with Clarence. However, Alabama is certain her pimp, Drexl (Gary Oldman), will not be happy; he's an ill-mannered sort with mob connections and a fondness for violence. Chivalrous Clarence offers to break the news to Drexl and collect her belongings, but he doesn't tell her he also plans to kill Drexl while he's there; a melee breaks out that leaves Drexl and his henchmen dead. Clarence grabs a suitcase that he thinks contains Alabama's clothes, but he discovers it instead holds a half million dollars' worth of cocaine. The couple hits the road for California, planning to sell the dope and enjoy the good life in South America with the proceeds, but soon a group of very unhappy underworld characters are after them, as well as the police. True Romance also stars Dennis Hopper as Clarence's father, Christopher Walken as a mob boss who wants his cocaine back, Brad Pitt as a cheerful stoner, and Val Kilmer as the ghost of Elvis Presley. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

An Underrated Gem of a Gorefest

This film is just as good as anything you'd expect from early '90s Quentin Tarantino. The problem is that this film is underrated; it is sandwiched between the controversial "Resevoir Dogs" and the acclaimed "Pulp Fiction." Also, it was not directed that Tarantino himself (although Tony Scott does an excellent job). In spite of these factors, this is one of my favorite movies. It has a superb ensemble cast (Gary Oldman's performance is hilarious, my favorite in the film), awesome action scenes (the Patricia Arquette-James Gandolfini scene will leave you shaking), and it's just an all-around good movie. Great to watch if you're into violent action films and have a sense of humor.

with an ensemble cast and some of the best written lines in an action film, True Romance delivers. Slater and Arquette do a wonderful job as a couple of newlyweds on the run from the mob with a suitcase full of drugs. The come in contact with some of the most colorful characters you've ever seen who all have the most wonderfully written lines (Brad Pitt will make you laugh till you cry). To top it off, this is a Tony Scott film, so it also delivers in the way of action that is down right intense in multiple scenes. This is a required edition to any action buff's library.

    The best non-Tarantino Tarantino movie!

What's not to like the list of players is too long to list. This movie should be in everyone's top 10 of all time. Brad Pitt's greatest role to date. It's a great plot that makes sense. The only part of the movie that is a stretch is Christopher Walken as an Italian mobster. Otherwise just a great movie and you can tell the set must have been great as the performances are just fantastic!

This movie is really good but it does have several violent scenes. If violence is not a problem for you then you should like this movie. Both my husband & I like it very much. We have watched it multiple times over the years. Each time it doesn't disappoint! Christain Slater, Patricia Arquette, Christopher Walken, and Dennis Hopper provide for an excellent cast!!

    Horrible transfer to Blu-ray

From highdefdigest.com: "this 1080p/VC-1 transfer is flat and lacks the punch that the movie really deserves. There's been an unnecessary amount of noise reduction applied to the image, which decreases the amount of texture and detail that the image clearly deserves."

As much as I wasn't a huge fan of the subject material in this movie, I do have to give credit where credit is due, and that's for the excellent direction and performances we see in this picture. Great dvd set here for those who will enjoy it.
