Symphony X has done it again in my opinion. They continue to write very listenable and interesting music in the progressive metal vein. Dream Theater tries their damnedest but for some reason, I feel they fall short. "Underworld" has a classic listenability in the vein of some of the best Dio, Yngwie or Queensryche songs. Michael Romeo's riffs and solos are executed to perfection but never feels overly rehearsed and stale. Russell Allen's vocals are better than ever. The rest of the band hold it together beautifully and you can tell the band has matured into a well-oiled machine with this album. I can easily see this album becoming a classic in years to come.

Symphony X follows Iconoclast with another solid showing in Underworld. It continues the heavy and melodic formula of Iconoclast and Paradise Lost. "Overture" is a great intro, but the album falls off some melodically from there until the second half where Underworld shines. The chorus of "Nevermore" leaves some wanting. I expected it would be better being the first single. "Swan Song" is the "When All is Lost" of this album. My favorites are: Without You, To Hell and Back, In My Darkest Hour, and Swan Song. 4 or 4.5 and certainly worth buying.

There's some trepidation towards the new music that Symphony X has put out since Paradise Lost as it showcases a darker, heavier sound for the band. It's not that different here on Underworld, but there's more neo-classical elements here that may have been missing on the last two albums. It's great stuff even if you're not that big on Symphony X.

More mainstream Symphony X, but still great

Some of the songs on this album sound like they'd easily fit in with mainstream FM rock radio, if that's still a thing. Anyway, great stuff. Russell Allen is one of the best metal vocalists of the last 25 years. And Michael Romeo will bleed playing his guitar for you. It's very metal.

Why aren't these guys more popular? This album rocks from beginning to end and is definitely one of their best. Russell Allen's vocals are great and powerful and the band is tight. Just do yourself a favor and buy it if you like hard, progressive music. You will not be disappointed.

Another fantastic effort by Symphony X. These guys are a fantastic band, IMHO they are a bit underrated. Great musicians, great lyrics, everything one could ask for that enjoys prog/rock music. Worth a listen if they are unknown to you, absolutely worth it if you are a fan.

Definitely reaches to some earlier Symphony X, hints from The Odyssey. Vocals sound much more like they do live than past albums have, which is a good thing. If you've seen them live then you know what I mean. Diverse album that really exemplifies Symphony X.

I like how this band takes an extra year or two compared to other bands to record a new album. At least, I'm assuming this is why they so consistently put out great material. This is another one.
