    Synopsis

    V/H/S
A group of criminals scour a secluded country home for a mysterious videotape, and bear witness to scenes of unimaginable terror in this found-footage-style anthology horror film featuring segments from Glenn McQuaid (I Sell the Dead), Ti West (House of the Devil), Joe Swanberg (Silver Bullets), David Bruckner (The Signal), Adam Wingard (You're Next, and Radio Silence). It seemed like a simple job; all they needed to do was enter the home, find the videotape, and deliver it to their boss. But from the moment they arrived, a sinister tension descended. Gaining access to the house, the young thugs discover a rotting corpse amidst a collection of vintage television sets, and stockpiles of VHS tapes. Somewhere amidst the stacks is the tape they seek, but with each new video they watch, the dread continues to build. The sights that they witness are too horrible for words, but the greatest shock is yet to come. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

VHS's found footage formula is not new, however, the execution is. The movie centers on a group of friends who like to recording their every aspect of their lives including their assaults on innocent and acts of vandalism. One night, they are hired to locate a single video cassette among many in some strange house. Without any specifics, the friends begin viewing video cassettes. Each cassette is a vignette of the many genres of horror from the supernatural, thriller, slasher, ghostly, creature feature even sci-fi. An explanation of how such an eclectic collection of horror and mayhem is left up to the viewer's imagination, as is person who hired the friends to find the cassette tape. What is clear is their unfortunate fate to become a part of the collection.

This one is a tough one to review since V/H/S involves several small features. First off, the found footage thing is getting a little old maybe. I can get the whole keeping a web cam in your room and it records but the whole "Someone is carrying a camera and perfectly captures everything" seems a little been there done that. However I digress because I thought the last feature was actually pretty sharp. I should mention all these little movies are surrounded by guys who go about recording themselves doing some pretty despicable things to girls and selling the tapes. This starts the whole V/H/S thing. Tough part about this is you don't really feel bad for the characters once things start going wrong and this disconnect might have hurt the movie a little.

The characters are deliberately as horrific as the creatures that they encounter. A series of related stories of self-absorbed young victims with little sense of anything beyond themselves is presented in a dark, unsympathetic format. You are left feeling little for the victims except that they ended their days as they lived them; pointless. Well directed and a subtle commentary on the horror of how out culture is evolving, I would strongly encourage you watch...but not on a 'date' night!

I enjoyed this movie a bunch. With a small budget, the creators were still able to craft a fun and scary anthology, which include a few different storylines within the larger structure. The storylines were inventive and the prosthetic-work on some of the actors was really creative (including the Demon Girl, whose body morphs as the story progresses; really cool). If you like a different take on horror, and want a fun and scary ride, go for VHS.

this was a weird movie. I only got about half an hour into it because the "found footage" jerkiness and moving around gave me a headache, and the story was difficult to follow. I'll try to give it another chance because I heard it was really scary

I really enjoy anthology type horror movies so the fact that you get so many stories bundled into one is really awesome to me. Not only that but you get a little bit of variety for the sub genres too.

This anthology series is a spectacular example of how talented filmmakers can progress the horror genre. Not all of the shorts live up to the best, but they are pretty great.
