Next-Gen Upgrade and Compatibility
Will my games play on next-gen consoles?
PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are ready to take over the console gaming world. The question on many gamers’ minds is this: How will my games play on next-gen consoles?
The good news is that many titles feature upgrade options or are compatible with next-gen consoles. Find out what PlayStation and Xbox have in store for gamers.
Next-gen upgrade options.
If you own Madden NFL 21 or FIFA 21, you can take advantage of EA’s Dual Entitlement. This allows you to upgrade your PS4 or Xbox One copy of these games to the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, respectively, at no extra cost. And it is very possible that additional titles will have upgrade options in the coming weeks and months.
PlayStation is giving PS5 owners the option to upgrade a physical or digital PS4 game to the digital PS5 version. Depending on the game, you may be able to upgrade at no cost, or with a fee. To learn more about your options, create or sign in to your PlayStation account.
Xbox’s Smart Delivery program ensures you will have access to the best possible version of your game for your console, across generations. All Xbox Game Studios titles, such as Halo Infinite, as well as other big releases like Cyberpunk 2077 and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla support Smart Delivery.
Compatible with next-gen consoles.
You may be worried that the games you own now can’t be played on your next-gen console. While not every legacy game will be compatible with the next-gen consoles, most games will be. Sony has stated that the overwhelming majority of the more than 4,000 PS4 games will be compatible with PS5. Microsoft has stated that nearly all Xbox One games will be playable on Xbox Series X|S consoles.
In some cases, your games may have enhanced graphics or performance. For example, a game that plays at 1080p and 30 fps on PS4 may play at 4K and 60 fps on the PS5 next-gen console.
