Village of the Damned [DVD] [1995]

John Carpenter scares up a horror remake with his small-town fright fest Village of the Damned. Presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen, Universal's work on this transfer appears to be in tip-top shape. With solid colors and dark black levels, the image sports no edge enhancement, grain, or other imperfections that might otherwise mar the image. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround and is also top-notch. With a bombastic bass and swirling surround sounds, this mix is very full and should give any home theater and thorough workout. Also included on this disc is a Dolby 2.0 soundtrack in French as well as Spanish subtitles and English captions. The extra features on Village of the Damned are less than exciting. The supplements available include a theatrical trailer for the film, a few scant production notes, some info on the cast and crew, and a few bonus trailers for other Universal releases.

Synopsis

Village of the Damned
This film is a remake of the classic 1960 science-fiction thriller, Village of the Damned, which was based on the novel The Midwich Cuckoos by John Wyndham. Veteran horror director John Carpenter is at the helm this time, with Christopher Reeve replacing George Sanders in the starring role. Aliens put the entire village of Midwich to sleep for 24 hours and impregnate many women. Reeve plays Alan Chaffee, the town doctor, whose wife Barbara (Karen Kahn) is one of the women carrying an alien baby. Visiting scientist Dr. Susan Verner (Kristie Alley) is monitoring the situation for the government. She supervises a mass birthing in a barn. The children turn out to be white-haired, glassy-eyed, and telepathic. Their plan is to use their supernatural powers to kill the villagers and help the aliens take over, and only Chaffee and Verner can stop them. ~ Michael Betzold, Rovi
