It's a TV... nice picture and good smart functions
|Posted .Well... it's a TV. At 55", it's big. Bigger than I was ready for, coming from a 42-inch model from the mid 2010s. From what I've read it's a little thicker and a little heavier than other options, but I'm not bothered by that. It comes with legs that install easily and keep it pretty steady, but I'm not particularly interested in that, because I bought a table-mounted stand that lifts the screen up off the surface of the shelving unit I use as a TV stand, which allowed me to place my turntable and receiver on the tabletop under the screen (side note: this TV uses a 300 x 200 VESA pattern for its mounting screws, so if you're thinking of mounting this TV on a pole, make sure your choice as that option). The picture is quite nice, for the most part. I had to play around with settings for a good while before I found the right one. I ended up using a custom setting and strangely had to reduce the amount of red in the picture because it was glaringly bright compared to other colors. Once calibrated, 4K and 4K HDR video looks very nice, indeed, and I had no problems with motion smoothing making movies look like cheap TV shows. The brightness is very good, even in my living room, which gets lots of natural light during the day. One nice feature from a display standpoint is the TV automatically detects the type of source that's coming through, even when that source is passed through. I use an Onkyo TX-8270 stereo HDMI receiver, and hook my Blu-ray player, HD cable box, Roku, and Nintendo Switch through it. When switching between inputs, the TV auto-detects game sources and HDR sources and turns on the appropriate profile, which is a very nice. One function that's been working fairly well is the auto switching of sources. Pressing the "home" button on my Roku remote changes the input to Roku from whatever it had been. Similarly, waking up the Switch with a wireless controller changes the input to Switch. The Roku remote also allows me to control volume and power of the TV, and when the TV is connected to HDMI ARC input of the Onkyo receiver, it can be set to turn off the TV speakers and use only the receiver volume. It works fairly well, and also allows the TV to send audio from its own Smart applications. Speaking of the smart functions of the TV, I have to say, I'm impressed. The last Vizio TV I used with smart features was built in 2015, and I was not impressed back then with the functionality. On the other hand, this TV's smart functions are pretty snappy, and the menus are laid out pretty well. I was able to set up Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Hulu accounts to use with he streaming functions of this TV, and they all worked well, more or less. I'm particularly impressed with Vizio's "WatchFree" service, which cobbles together some of the better online TV content, with channels that include old movies and TV shows (watching classic episodes of Unsolved Mysteries has been a treat), as well as content from creators like "People are Awesome." It's nice to just have something to turn on, and very much like free cable TV if you have an internet connection. The one strange thing about the TV's smart functions is the remote. It doesn't come with a standard "play/pause" button, nor FF/RW buttons, meaning the user is left with the "OK" button and the circular 4-position navigation button (doing double-duty) to control the streaming functions. The remote is also without voice command functionality, meaning any navigation of the smart menus must be done manually. There are, helpfully, an array of 6 buttons at the top with shortcuts for Vudu, Netflix, Prime Video, Kumo, Hulu, and RedBox. The final "smart" feature of the TV is its ability to be used with Amazon Alexa and Google Home. As a Google Home user, I love being able to cast directly to the TV from my phone. My mom has been recording herself reading children's books and uploading the videos to YouTube, and I love how easy it is to click on a YouTube link from a text message she sends and cast it to the TV to show the kids, or to say "hey, Google, play Paw Patrol on my TV," for example. I should add that, as a Roku Premiere owner, I will mostly not be using the smart channels through the TV, opting instead to stick with the Roku experience. I subscribe to CBS All-Access and HBO through my Roku account, and I also prefer the Roku remote and menus, so I'll keep using it for now. It's nice to know that some day I can choose Vizio's smart functions if I need to, and I can always cast video from my phone to the TV. The bottom line: like I said at the start, it's a TV. It's big, the screen is bright enough and looks great in HD or 4K resolutions, the smart features and remote are adequate, and it works pretty well hooked up to an HDMI receiver with a bunch of sources attached. I'm pleased, but if I were to recommend this to a friend, I would have to make sure they're ready for this specific TV based on its attributes. I wouldn't recommend it across the board unless it fits their room and their needs.

Amazing Value for Next Gen Consoles
||Posted .Owned for 1 month when reviewed. The best value by far for a 4K UHD set that has 2.1 HDMI, the only thing it lacks is 120hz support as the panel is limited to 60hz but it literally has everything else including: HDR10, Dolby Vision, AMD Freesync/Variable Refresh Rate and Auto Low Latency. The QLED panel isn’t as nice as an LG OLED but it also costs $800 less and put the two side by side and you’d be hard pressed to spend the extra cash. Bottom line if you’ve got a PS5 or Series X/S than this tv will blow you you away for features and price.

Great 4K HDR, really bad DSE
||Posted .Owned for 1 month when reviewed. If you are sensitive to “Dirty Screen Effect” than you might want to look for another TV. It may not be the same for all of these TVs but the one I bought had terrible DSE and was very noticeable, especially screen panning while playing PS5 games. The 4K HDR was great but the DSE was too distracting to enjoy. Returned the TV and paid a little extra and went with the Samsung Q70T. Great decision.

||Posted .Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed.I have a love hate relationship with this TV. Not so much hate, more annoyed. First ill say that i am no tv picture setting genius and i dont know everything about setting up a tv to get it to work best. I watched a lot of reviews of this tv so i knew what i was buying. I am a sensitive viewer to screen effects and motion blur. I like a sharp clear image. This tv delivers that for a still pictures. Motion is blurry almost to the point that i wanted to return or exchange tv because i couldnt be the only one seeing this. But i held off giving the tv more time to dial in settings. Well my 15 day return period expired and i was still messing with settings and noticing more glitches and screen freezes. Ive settled with the tv, i paid for a mid range performer i guess thats what i got. I was just expecting a little bit more precision. The gaming on this tv is phenomonal i have to say. That is really its shining moment. If this was just a gaming tv it would be 5 stars. Ill have to pay $800-$1000 for my next tv.

Good TV
||Posted .Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. So my first Vizio TV purchase, I was pleasantly surprised. TV seems good quality so far and picture quality is good for the price. Still have a 5 star review because I currently have a different brand tv that consistently restarts as if I unplugged the TV. So when I got this VIZIO I love how quickly it starts up even by pressing one of the app buttons on the remote it directly powers on the tv to the app I choose which is very convenient.

Not bad, not amazing.
||Posted .Owned for 1 month when reviewed. The tv speakers sound horrible and I can’t ever get airplay to actually work. It’s be nice if I could hook Bluetooth headphones directly to tv as well. I have my Xbox series x hooked to it though, and use a gaming headset, so sound hasn’t been an issue for me. Over all the tv is fine and I don’t regret buying it, I just wish I would’ve spent a little more and gotten a Samsung. It’ll work just fine for now though.

Worth it
||Posted .Owned for 1 month when reviewed. My husband and I wanted a larger TV and one that had updated ports and features. We absolutely love this 55” VIZIO smart tv. I read lots of reviews and I have to agree that this was a good deal. The remote is very easy to use; concise and uncluttered. Mounting is easy if you’re looking for that, too. Video quality great. I would recommend!!

Q: QuestionAny recommendations for adjusting the settings to dial in the picture and performance of the 55" model?
Asked by Hansen.
- A:Answer Rtings.com has calibration settings for this model which you can use as a starting point. I recommend Calibrated Dark, then increasing the backlight or tone mapping to 80-100. I bumped the contrast to 55 and left most other settings at their default. In advanced settings, I recommend turning off most settings except for the Full Array Local Dimming option, and using medium or high. I read that medium is best for HDR content and low for SDR content. High can wash out blacks. Note that with the current firmware update, the local dimming introduces flickering as the backlight struggles to adapt to different lighting conditions in the scene. Clear Motion can be used for sports but it’s generally recommended to keep it off for movies and television; personally, I thought the effect was very subtle on this TV, definitely not strong enough to call it a “soap opera effect,” and I would sometimes keep it on for movies. Finally, I varied the gamma between 2.1 to 2.4 depending on what I was watching. I appreciated that on this TV, the settings seemed to save based on what app you’re using and what input you’re using, so you can use different settings for different content.
