    Synopsis

    Von Ryan's Express
Von Ryan's Express is a fast-paced, well-acted World War II drama, featuring a squadron of Allied soldiers trying to escape a prison camp in Italy. While most of the prisoners at the camp are British, a determined, resourceful American Air Force colonel (Frank Sinatra) takes charge and leads the escape, which requires that the prisoners wrest control of a German train and propel it through Italy to Switzerland. The subsequent ride, featuring good special effects and outstanding stunt work, is great fun and very suspenseful. Frank Sinatra makes an effective action hero aided by veteran actor Trevor Howard as a British officer. The CinemaScope photography is outstanding and director Mark Robson directs the exciting action sequences with skill. ~ Linda Rasmussen, Rovi

Shot predominately using the Panavision system—with a few scenes in Fox's native CinemaScope—the film's 2.35:1 image is heavily grainy, so much so that the analog film noise affects the overall clarity of the picture. (On the plus side, there's no blatant DNR or edge enhancement here.) There are some shots where fine detail borders on impressive, but much of the time textures and outlines seem fuzzy and undefined. Color fares better, with a warm, rich palette, balanced skin tones, and good contrast. (Although the day-for-night scenes—as usual—look awful, with crushed shadow detail galore.) The source print isn't in bad shape, but there are noticeable white specks and abrasions in many scenes, and there occasionally appears to be some chroma/compression noise intermixed with the natural film grain.

Not only was Sinatra an epic crooner. He was also a first-class actor. Von Ryan's Express is perhaps one of his best platforms for demonstrating his skills as an actor. Further, the plot is engaging and far from predictable. Sinatra is not a one-dimensional super hero. Rather he is a complex character who is thrust into a leadership role, grows, makes tough decisions (not all of which are good), and ultimately leads a large group of soldiers to freedom at great personal sacrifice. No review of this Blu-ray would be complete if it made no mention of this movie's cinematography. This Blu-ray underscores the effective cinematography which enables the director to tell such a good story. I highly recommend this movie and this Blu-ray format to anyone who has an interest in World War II, enjoys great drama, appreciates great acting, and is mesmerized by beautiful cinematography.

I was somewhat sceptical about an action film starring "ol' Blue Eyes". Was I ever wrong! Frank Sinatra does an excellent job of portraying an American officer (Ryan) leading a group of Allied POW's in an escape from Italy by hijacking a German train. If it seems an improbable premise, it is very convincing as the story unfolds. There are numerous moments of tension when it seems that surely they will be caught. Watching them overcome these obstacles is exciting and great fun. Without giving it away, there is a surprise at the end (according to the DVD package, the ending in the original book was changed in the film at Frank's insistance). A film I highly recommend.

In this movie, Frank Sinatra proves he not only can sing, but he can act. Frank Sinatra stars as a captured American pilot sent to an Italian POW camp during the Italian campaign in WWII. He not only has to fight the enemy, but the Allied POW chain of command that had been in place. This makes for a drama. Then when the camp guards desert there is the race to freedom.

The 1960s and early '70s were crowded with excellent WWII-themed movies and while Von Ryan's Express doesn't quite make it into this top tier, it's not far below. Tense and well-scripted, the film benefits from the incomparable coolness of Frank Sinatra, who isn't acting so much as he's simply being. Recommended for any and all fans of popcorn-variety World War II movies.

I think that "Von Ryan's Express" was one of the greatest classic war films of all-time and it was also one of my favorite films. I really enjoyed all of the action, mystery, suspense and drama that kept this film very entertaining and enjoyable. I also think that this film had a really great cast, plot and storylines as well.

Frank Sinatra was known to be difficult at times to direct but, he could do some good acting. This is an example of that playing an American P.O.W. who makes some good and some bad decisions. When is what is interesting. I liked it.

This is one of the first movies I've owned that stars Frank Sinatra. The plot was good and didn't drag. Good movie about the war in Italy which few WW II movies are set in. The ending was a bummer (all I'll say about that).
