Synopsis

Kamikaze
Meant to be paired with director Perry Wolf's documentary on the European fronts in World War II (Smashing of the Reich), this effective documentary on the Pacific war begins with Japanese preparations before the bombing of Pearl Harbor and ends with the U.S. dropping the atomic bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Aside from the interesting footage on the Japanese home front before Pearl Harbor, there are also many questions raised as to why the U.S. was not aware that Pearl Harbor might be bombed. Evidence is given that enemy planes were sighted earlier and messages were decoded, both in time to give plenty of warning. Aside from these questions, and many scenes of battles, there is also footage on life in Hawaii before the war broke out. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Theirs Is the Glory
Theirs is the Glory earned some of the highest critical praise ever afforded a British wartime docudrama. This is the filmed record of the ill-fated battle of Arnhem in September of 1944, when the Allied forces combined to force a total German retreat from Holland. The "bridge too far" at Arnhem proved to be the Waterloo of this particular strategy, due to a series of unforseen mishaps and miscalculations. Of the 10,000 troops engaged in the offensive, 8,000 lost their lives. Without sugarcoating the disaster, the film points out the courage and sacrifice of the men involved in the mission. Brian Desmond Hurst directed Theirs is the Glory, while the large cast of "re-enactors" performed sans screen credit. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Payoff in the Pacific
The documentary chronicles the battles that followed the Japanese defeats at New Guinea, Guadalcanal, and the Central Pacific. Particular attention is paid to MacArthur's return to the Philippines, thus fulfilling his famous promise to return in triumph to the scene of his greatest humiliation. ~ Rob Ferrier, Rovi
