Great buy, compatible with PS4 Pro? Approved.
|Posted .I originally bought a 8 TB external that I believed would work with the PS4 Pro unfortunately that was not the case. So figured I would try this out, a employee recommended this unit that he has on his PS4 Pro and it worked like a charm. Went home hooked it up to the back USB port on PS4 Pro connected it to the External Hard Drive, let it sit for a sec then plugged in the power for the external hard drive (yes, this external hard drive needs power adapter to work) and boom. After about 1 minute or 2 the PS4 Pro recognized it, so I was already impressed, last one I tried didn’t even recognize it after about 10 minutes or so. After the message appeared in top left (external hard drive detected) (give or take message being a little off on wording I suppose). Then I went through proper setting via PlayStation website (super easy) and let the PS4 Pro format the drive to work. Now I can say I have a 8TB hard drive on it and room for all the games I need. Make sure your PlayStation is up to date, version 6.20 is what mine is on. Thanks WD, made my night. Game on friends!

It's all about the terabytes

Quality5 out of 5Value5 out of 5Ease of Use5 out of 5Plugged it in and it worked. Just what I wanted for mass storage. I do NOT leave it on and connected, using it ONLY when I have files to transfer. Files that are headed there go first to a 4TB USB drive that sits next to the computer. Every week I tranfer those files to a larger storage drive. I do conventional and astrophotography, images and video, and generate a LOT of raw image data. Even though I pare it down it still ends up being a lot. I don't do RAID and offsite duplicates .... if I lose my raw data I'll miss it but Western Civilization won't collapse because of it. Finished work is in duplicate, the raw data is not. Attached is an unretouched photo of actual digital photo data. : )

Defective Product! Lost 5TB of data!
|Posted .Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed.Features
Quality1 out of 5Value1 out of 5Ease of Use4 out of 5I needed an external storage for my files since I stream on Mixer constantly and my internal hd was getting full. So, I had this 8TB My Book delivered to my house. I've been using it since 5/26, and the last backup I have recorded was 6/18. Less than a month! I used all of the original cables and power supply, I didn't knock it over, and I tried all of the USB's on my gaming rig, so it's nothing I did. One day, the WD software and PC says it's unavailable, and disk configuration says it's RAW data instead of NTFS. My heart sinks... I'm so disappointed with WD. I have multiple old WD external HD's from them that haven't failed me, and this is the 2nd one I bought this year to have failed me. I originally bought a 5TB EasyStore from them as well earlier this year, and that failed too. Luckily, I didn't have anything important in that HD. Right now, I'm frantically trying to save old vids and data from the My Book external drive, and then I'll return it to the store for a refund. If I had run 'Error Checking' on both drives before using them, I would've known that both were going to die on me. Don't be me. Find a different product to store your data offline.

Great for Mac and PC, noisy and requires fast CPU
|Posted .Owned for 1 month when reviewed.Features
Quality4 out of 5Value5 out of 5Ease of Use5 out of 5Pros mentioned:Backup, SpeedCons mentioned:NoiseThis product is great for what it is, plenty of space but still a Hard Disk drive, which means it's loud, slower than an SSD and it seems the more media I add to it the slower it is to search through the folders. Great for backing up, it may have a faster connection than my 2 external SSD's but I wouldn't recommend using it as a cache or media disk for video editing. I use Adobe Editing Software so I now use the 2 SSDs for active projects and use the WD My Book for backing up old projects and footage. The biggest benefit is a bang for your buck. If you're looking for more storage space and don't need crazy fast transfer speeds, this is a great product, otherwise, I recommend using SSD, if you have the money for it.

You need a backup.
|Posted .Owned for 7 months when reviewed.Features
Quality5 out of 5Value5 out of 5Ease of Use5 out of 5I'd been running a 4tb drive for years, and it was getting full. It was another WD drive, like this. Picking up the 8 tb was a question of balance - capacity vs price. This just hit that balance perfectly for me. Setting it up is, of course, plug-in-and-go simple. The WD software is a nice add on, and setting up a backup is easy. Pick what you need, how often you need to back up, and done. And of course... you need a backup. Online backups (like Backblaze) are great, and of course if the drive is stolen or damaged your backup *there* is safe - but being online, even with high speed connections, means that that initial backup (and any large changes) will take time to finish and to restore from. This drive is *right* there, runs over a fast USB 3 connection and is instantly accessible. If you can, use both, of course. This is not a NAS - you can't directly hook it up to the network - but I knew that going in. You can hook it up to (most) routers to share, or share it from your PC, but it's not natively network accessible. There are other products that will do that if that's what you're looking for. Since hooking it up, it's been rock solid and reliable. All I can ask for from an external drive.

Solid and healthy drive, but quiet clicking sound
|Posted .Owned for 1 month when reviewed.Features
Quality5 out of 5Value5 out of 5Ease of Use5 out of 5Pros: Easy to use. Cons: Quiet clicking noise when idle (this is normal), no power switch on the chassis. WD backup software is good for simple 'set and forget' users - pick the multiple drives or directories you want to back up and it will take care of them and regularly update them if you set a schedule. It's also easy to access your file backups without using the backup software because they are stored in a plain directory structure. Drive is quiet overall, but has a regular subtle clicking sound when idle (I checked online and this is normal). This is annoying if you have a very quiet room, but fine for an office environment or if you are going to keep the drive far away from you. You also have to keep the drive upright without covering the top, for cooling purposes. Because of the sound I keep the drive unplugged, but that's also inconvenient because there is no power switch. Drive comes formatted as exFAT so you may wish to format it to NTFS if you want to use Windows image backup utilities.

Perfect for my ps4
|Posted .Pros mentioned:SpeedSo I was waiting For the PlayStation update for the longest, I had all this games and I had to keep deleting them because my PS4 fills up so fast, and every time I wanted to play I had to wait for it to download. This was perfect after the update, I went with the 8 TB, and now I don't have to worry about space anymore and play all the games whenever I want or movies and music.

Q: QuestionWill this HD allow file retrieval from locations outside of your home network?
Asked by TechMoma.
- A:Answer This is primarily used as a local device. Through advanced networking it's possible to connect to remotely such as setting up a VPN. If you're looking for a device that's easily accessible remotely I'd go with the WD My Cloud. I have both devices and have setup an incremental backup with the two units and they work easily together.

Q: QuestionWill it play my games better on my labtop? I only play simulation games no others!!!! I have a Toshiba Amd A8
Asked by DarnellM52.
- A:Answer External drives will not make your computer do anything faster! External Hard Drives, or HD, are for backup and or if you need to extend the storage size of your existing computer/device. If your computer has USB3, it will perform MUCH FASTER than the older USB2 or USB 1.1 or older versions! BUT it will not perform as fast as an internal HD! Here is the reason: The internal HD has interface called SATA and the data can flow much faster than using the USB port. USB port has to travel through several components, before the data reaches the internal hardware, that is why it is little slower than SATA interface. Also, remember to unplug the USB device as soon as you aren't using the external HD, just in case your computer gets a virus! The virus will spread to every device your computer has a connection to! In my profession I see too many unhappy people, who did not backup their data to external the HD (Hard Drive) ! Don't bee one of these unhappy people yourself!

Q: QuestionI just bought a new MacBook Pro running OS Catalina 10.15.5. Will this hard drive run function with that operating system?
Asked by OS.
- A:Answer The drive is factory formated to Windows NTFS. You may need to format it with your computers macOS disk utility program to make it fully compatible with your system (read/write). If your intention is to use it for cross platform (mac/windows) storage, you will need to have it formated to fat32. If you format to macOS you wont be able to right files to it from the Windows platform. If you leave it formated to NTFS you wont be able to right macOS files to it. The drive is enormous so ideally you can partition it with macOS disk utility and have 3 partitions (macOS, fat32 & NTFS) one of each.

Q: QuestionI am trying to connect my My Book 8TB to my Netgear Nighthawk x10 router to use as a Plex Media Server. After a number of discussions, I reformatted to NFTS first and then added my media as MP4. Anyone have success?
Asked by jay.
- A:Answer Ummm... Why not connect it to a desktop and have Plex server running in the background? That's what I did; its easy to set up and it works just fine. And I have a variety of media; AVI, MKV, MP4, audio files and photos. Good luck.
