Not bad for an impulse buy
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. At first, the "cloud" would disappear from my network....ao after a few days of doing the power-off routine, I put in a complaint case to WD, and within short, I had some proposed solutions, which I thought I tried correctly, but it didn't take, so I tried the paper-clip reset again, and this time it worked, and it has been reliable ever since, I can recommend it.

Great backup system for anyone
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased this for a client for a local backup and cloud storage system. It was easy for me to setup and configure. It has plenty of granular configurations for personal or small business use. They remote site is easy to use and configure for remote storage syncing. I will definitely purchase this item again for anyone looking for a great backup system.

Access files on my iPhone anytime
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This backup device is such a good idea! I don't want all of my stuff archived on some evil empires server, nickel and dimeing along they way. I suggest you do the initial backup to this device with the cat5 cable so that you don't spend 2 days of Wifi usage doing the first backup. After that wireless works great. I Like having access to all videos, photos, scanned receipts, music available on my phone anytime without using phone device storage.

Great NAS device for the price
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Note that I am using Ubuntu Linux on my laptop, so these remarks may or may not apply to users on Windows or Mac. So this thing is basically a stripped down Linux server with a single, large hard drive and a built-in web server. You can access the system on your local network with desktop or mobile apps, or directly via the built-in web server . Your data can also be made available over the web from anywhere with a little additional set up. I have played with the cloud access and it seems to work fine, though it's a little slow. I haven't used it for anything serious, so I can't make any further comments. I've been using the device as a media server as well as a network attached backup device. It serves fairly well in both cases. It's fast enough to serve as a media streaming device, and I've never had any issues streaming full-HD video over my N-class wireless. But it's a bit slow when doing my weekly backups, transfer drops as low as 3MB/sec when moving files over the wireless network. The shares on the device are exposed as Windows Shares, and I am accessing them with a Linux laptop. This could be the cause of the less-then-stellar performance, and a bit of tweaking may help. My backups run unattended at night so it hasn't been an issue for me. I'm very happy with this NAS device. You can't beat it for the price.

Works OK but has some issues
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. For the price this works fine. It is not super fast but then I don't have Gigabit ethernet either. Works fine copying small chunks of data (8 - 10 gb) but when I tried to copy 70 gb of files in one session it hung up. If you leave it open in explorer with out activity it will time out and be unavailable. If you close the window and open it up again it works fine. Has worked great every time from my cell phone. Setup is not intuitive. Technical skills a definite bonus. Needed support on 2nd day and they were very helpful.

Great for faster Networks...
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I live in the sticks. I mean a cow field, and so I got this as a plan to save room on my phone which I can't update or replace that often. Cause I need the room on it for other things. So I started transferring over movies, and other things. So one day while in town I decided while waiting to fire it up, and give it a try, and watch a movie. Nope. My home speed of 1.5mbps was like: You can't do this. I'm sure if I had faster speeds it would be great. It just can't deal with slow upload speeds I'm limited too. So beyond that. ITs a great thing to have. I love I can access my pictures anywhere, and share them. Thats the biggest bonus, and #1 reason I did get this.

Q: QuestionCan I download and upload remotely?I have noticed in other reviews that purchasers of My Cloud are having trouble accessing files from anywhere outside the home network (ie over the internet from remote sites). Is this an issue? Also, the product description states you need to have a Dropbox (or other) account to access your files. So does that mean I'm also paying for a larger Dropbox account just to use My Cloud when away from home? Thanks.
Asked by bsharpe.
- A:Answer This is not the case. I am accessing my files remotely with no problems both from a cell phone and other computers over the internet. It works great for this purpose. You DO NOT need a drop box for any of this. My problem with the unit is that by having this remote functionality turned on, the unit does not sleep and the motor runs continuously. WD Tech support told me that if remote access is turned on, the unit has to run continuously. This is a cloud killer for me. The unit will not last if it never stops spinning and working. But, by turning this functionality off, you now have just an over priced and slow (due to wireless transfer of data) storage device. It's a no go in my opinion. If you haven't purchased this, I recommend you stick with a traditional external storage drive. In my opinion, this unit was not ready for marketing as this is a major flaw.

Q: QuestionDoes it need to be open to the internetI know that's what most people are looking for (access from anywhere), but I'm looking for a network hard drive for the people on my home network . I don't need or want people from the internet trying to access my info. I'd like to be able to turn internet access to the hard drive off, can that be done?
Asked by Mickie.
- A:Answer This is not a wifi hot spot so people cannot access it. And you can also turn it off. Only thing is you won't be able to access when it's off. You can get other NAS hard drive only for your home network. I have Seagate 3tb nas and it works great. Everybody in my house has their own password for their files. And yes, you can turn it off if you want.

Q: QuestionCan different users have separate, password-protected folders?
Asked by L.
- A:Answer I'm not an expert. the following is based on my usage. Yes. You have to create shares (folders where you store your files). You also add users (user profiles for those you grant access to the drive. Once you create shares, you can leave them publically accessible to any user, or you can make it private and give read-only or full access rights to users in any combination.
