I have a Freenas system with Eight 3TB drives from different drive manufacturers. A few from Toshiba, a few from HGST, a few from Hitachi, and a few from Western Digital. Since I brought the NAS up about 3 years ago, I have had 3 drives fail. None of the failed drives have been from Western Digital. I replaced every failed drive with a WD Red and have not had any problems with any WD drive in my system. I know that anecdotal evidence doesn't mean much because everyone has a favorite brand but that's just my experience. Western Digital Red drives perform very well and have been very reliable for me for years. I would recommend WD Red drives to anyone looking to build a NAS system.

I put 2x 3TB WD Red dives in a Synology DS215j. They've been up and running 24/7 for about 6 weeks. I ran the Check Disk in Windows as well as AVG's disk checking utility, and both drives are green across the board. Moving data to them can take quite awhile, but the transfer speeds were as expected. I moved files about 20GB at a time and validated each time. I've successfully streamed music, photos, and videos to my PC and smartphone without a hitch. I've had pretty good luck with hard drives from WD (8 drives in 10 years, only one showed problems and it took ~3 years), though to be fair it's been good with Seagate so far, too (2 drives with zero issues, a 3 month and a 5 year old). I hope to get 5+ years out of these.

I used a number of sites to compare information on hard drives for a small home server build. This drive from Western Digital met my size, price, energy use and reliability requirements perfectly. With the special that was running when I bought it the price was excellent too. Can't go wrong with one of these drives!
