What to Expect When You're Expecting
Five expectant couples learn that having a baby is anything but predictable in this uplifting romantic comedy based on Heidi Murkoff's ubiquitous best-seller. A household name thanks to her popular fitness show, Jules (Cameron Diaz) can't contain her excitement after learning she is about to have a baby with Evan (Matthew J. Morrison), the sure-footed star of a popular dance show. But the closer Jules gets to her due date, the more she and Evan realize the demands of parenthood and the responsibilities of a celebrity couldn't be more different. Meanwhile, outspoken infant-advice author Wendy (Elizabeth Banks) contends with surging hormones as her belly begins to swell, and her devoted husband Gary is shell-shocked to discover that his overbearing trophy wife will soon be having twins. Of course not everyone is cut out to be a father, and as professional photographer Holly (Jennifer Lopez) prepares to scour the globe for a child to adopt, her reluctant husband Alex gets his first glimpse of fatherhood in a brutally honest support group for new dads. And while some parents spend years preparing for the right moment to have a child, feuding food-truck owners Rosie (Anna Kendrick) and Marco (Chace Crawford) get the surprise of their lives when an impulsive act of passion has permanent repercussions. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

If you’re about to take on the one task that you can never really be ready for, no matter what book you read, what do you do? You talk to people who’ve been there. Expert or not, they’ll have advice you can actually relate to. In the beginning of the film, we’re introduced to a cast of characters too numerous to list. Among them, however, are Holly and Alex (played by Jennifer Lopez and Rodrigo Santoro) who are beginning the arduous task of adopting a child from abroad after experiencing great difficulty conceiving. Also, we’re shown the final episode of a Dancing with the Stars type of show and as one of the winning contestants, Jules (played by Cameron Diaz) becomes nauseous and throws up which, in this film anyway, can only mean one thing. Holly (Lopez) is concerned that, even with the wait they have ahead of them, Alex (Santoro) won’t be ready for the challenges of parenting and isn’t excited about the prospect. To help him, she sets him up with The Dudes Group, men with children and pregnant wives who tell the truth, offer advice, and commiserate. One of the founding principles of the group is that they do not tell wives or girlfriends what takes place during group meetings. Another, told to us by Gabe, a man who has children already is that they don’t pass judgment. Even as one child, who’s father is played by Chris Rock, welcomes Alex to the group by hitting him with a stick and seems to find an accident around every corner. Now, even as someone who’s never been expecting, the book of the same name was something I’d heard of before and as a result I would’ve known what this movie was about even without seeing the trailer. And, as was the case with He’s Just Not That Into You, another movie based on an eponymous self-help book, there isn’t much to see here. The characters themselves are exaggerated and the connections between them strain credibility and imagination. It isn’t offensive, though I might feel differently if I had or was going to have children, but it isn’t that entertaining either. There are some cheap laughs and shallow dramatic moments, but nothing that funny or insightful. If you are about to have children, skip the movie, read the book. And as someone who is beyond tired of hearing other people say “the book was much better than the movie” it pains me to say that.

Taken from the title of a well known book, "What to Expect When You're Expecting" this film is about pregnancy and how some people deal with it. Some of the pregnancies are unexpected while some are planned, there is even an adoption. Basically this film goes into the lives of 5 couples and what it is like for them to have a child, what their struggles are and hopes as well as disappointments. It is set up in a way that mimics Babel and Crash in a story structure sense, in that one couples story relates in some way to another couple, and in that everyone is connected, but don't really know it, we as the audience can see it, but they cannot. Overall a very cute and fun comedy with great laughs, and some tears....definitely a chick flick ;)

      Not just a chick flick

My girlfriend dragged me to see this in theaters and though I won't admit it to her, I found it pretty hilarious. Guys, if you passed this by thinking this is just another chick flick, think again. If you have children, you can definitely relate. If you don't have any kids, buy it anyway, because one day you will and believe me, you'll need the humor! Overall, a great movie, the romance between the young couple could have been thrown out but I think studios threw it in there to appeal to the younguns.

My daughter, her BF, and I all loved this movie. It was awesome start to finish. Lots of laughs and a few teary moments too. The cast was amazing and the story wonderful. Every couple ended up being twisted into the plot somehow too. Definitely adding the DVD to our library.

I tend to get leery when I see movies that are full of well known actors. That, to me, is a ploy to somehow save a lame script..and it rarely works. This is another one of those movies. Some humorous moments, but not many. Some romance, but not much. Not a bad movie, just not memorable.

I loved this movie. I thought it was a fantastic depiction of what different women go through during child conception and birth. I absolutely loved it and would watch it again.
