To start, I thought I purchased this from Best Buy. I was in the store but it seems that Best Buy has an agreement with a third party appliance retailer. They took the Best Buy gift card as part of the payment but I got no credit on the My Best Buy program. The retailer did not stand by the customer when the refrigerator did not work properly. They just passed me off to Whirlpool.
The refrigerator was over-cooling. Whirlpool sent the contracted repair person out. The repair person decided he needed parts and arranged to come again. On the second visit, the repair person replaced one part and broke three others. Problem not fixed. We had a dozen eggs that froze and broke. Called Whirlpool and explained the problem and asked they not send the same repair company. Second repair person decided to replace the same part as the first and replace the three things the first repair person broke. Called the repair company a few days later, I was informed the parts were not in yet. Called Whirlpool, they said they would expedite shipping. The repair company never called to reschedule. After a while we called them. They changed the part and replaced the other three parts. Problem not fixed. The repair person suggested we ask Whirlpool for a replacement. Called Whirlpool, they would not replace the refrigerator until the repair person declared the refrigerator unrepairable. Called the repair company and they said they sent a note to Whirlpool saying so. Called Whirlpool who said it was another department. Whirlpool told us they will review the claim and get back to us. Waited a week with nothing from Whirlpool. Called Whirlpool to inquire about the status of the claim, was informed the claim was rejected. Whirlpool said they would send the repair person out again and the repair person had to call Whirlpool engineering to discuss when on site. Whirlpool engineering’s suggestion was to turn freezer control to maximum cooling and the refrigerator section to minimum cooling. The freezer section got warmer and the refrigerator section was still freezing food. Called Whirlpool again, told them that the time off from work to deal with the service calls could have paid for a new refrigerator. They wanted the repair person to come out one more time. After five and a half months and six service calls, we got a replacement refrigerator.
The reason we bought the refrigerator to begin with was to replace an old refrigerator that need constant defrosting and this was the right size and we thought the brand was good. I do not plan to ever buy another Whirlpool branded product. One other thing, the freezer did not have a shelf included. It has the tracks to put one in but Whirlpool does not sell the shelf as an accessory.
