Cheaply put together, Made in Mexico, Big Freezer

      Posted
      SteveP

Large, made in Mexico Whirlpool. Not made well at all, cheaply put together, noisy, not energy efficient, but inexpensive and plenty of space with a large freezer. Cons: -Made in Mexico -Cheaply made -- everywhere. Everywhere there was excess glue at the seams (even gunk between the glass on the shelves), things slightly askew, imperfections everywhere in the manufacturing. Nothing major, but all around you can see how cheaply it was put together. Even the bins feel cheap (thinner plastic than the older models). -Unit is about 20% noisier than the old unit it was replacing (another Whirlpool from 12 years ago). Not terribly noisy, but certainly somewhat noisier than previous models. -The outside doors (both for the freezer and main compartment) feel cold (or at least cool) to the touch when the unit is turned on -- not room temperature as with normal refrigerators -- showing the insulation isn't very good (the outside doors on every other refrigerator I've seen has always been at room temperature). -Energy-wise, it's only so-so, with a rating of 436kw/h (it's not EnergyStar rated and not very efficient). Compare that to numbers in the high 300s for EnergyStar rated ones of similar size. -No LED light in the Freezer. Really, Whirlpool? Really? Pros: -Cheap. When on sale it can be an ok deal (if the thing lasts) for what you get. If you don't have a lot of money, you get a big fridge and large freezer for a moderate price. -Lots of freezer space: the 6.1 cubic foot freezer is nice if you freeze a lot of things as I do. Much bigger than 18 cubic foot models that only have 4-5 cubic foot freezers (the main reason I bought this, instead of better-made 18.2 cubic foot models from GE or other makers). To me, Whirlpool is no longer the brand it used to be -- not at all -- and is no longer a selling point. I don't mind it being made in Mexico (as a lot of brands are made there now) but unless you pay through the nose for their high end models, you now get cheaply put together stuff that is manufactured in Mexico very sloppily. I would NOT honestly recommend it to a friend, but did buy it myself for the affordability and large freezer size. My suggestion is to look for the features and size you need, and purchase based on that, NOT on the brand anymore. Also, if you have a credit card that doubles the manufacturer's warranty, it might not be a bad idea to put it on such a card. The main selling point is the price (affordable when on sale) and the large freezer and main compartment space. I've had it a relatively short time, and it works. We'll have to see for how long. Not a 4- or 5- star unit by any means, that's for sure. Not a 1-star either (it does work), but in the 2-3 star range.

STOPPED WORKING IN 2 1/2 MONTHS

DO NOT PURCHASE THIS OR ANY OTHER WHIRLPOOL PRODUCT. THEIR WARRANTY PROGRAM IS A JOKE. Purchased this refrigerator because it had mostly good reviews and seemed to be a good value. Delivery was on time and they set it up great, took away all of the trash and were pleasant to deal with. Then, 2 1/2 months after buying this refrigerator, it began to make an intermittent clicking noise, then stopped cooling. We lost the entire contents of the our refrigerator. I called Whirlpool and they said they would send a qualified repairmen to fix the problem the next day between 8-12, The unqualified person who showed up at 12:40 said that the compressor was bad and he couldn't fix it, that they would report it to Whirlpoo.l who would make a decision on whether to fix or replace it, and that if it was to be fixed, he could not do it as he was not skilled enough to do it. I called whirlpool and they confirmed that their repair contractor had no skilled technicians for 2 weeks. They scheduled someone else to come out. I called them first to advise what the problem was so they could order parts. They assured me that their technician would have the skills to diagnose and repair the problem. He too showed up late and said that it was a bad compressor and that Whirlpool would have to decide to replace or repair, either way, our refrigerator was not getting fixed that day. Whirlpool tells me that the repair facility will order the parts but it will take 7-10 business days for them to come in. I explained that we need our refrigerator, we have kids and need to be able to keep food in the house and asked if they can expedite the parts process. The young lady on the phone said they can't expedite the parts BECAUSE THE SHIPPING COMPANY DOESN'T TREAT EXPEDITED PARTS GENTLE ENOUGH AND THEY WILL ARRIVE DAMAGED!!! This is professional grade b.s.. She offered a $50.00 visa card that will arrive in 6 weeks. Yaaaay. After 2 1/2 months of working, it broke down and Whirlpool is not willing to spend a few extra dollars to expedite the repairs and works with unqualified, unprofessional repair technicians. Will never buy one of their products again.

      Refrigerator cooling observation

      Posted
      patty

I bought this refrigerator and it was delivered yesterday. I have left it on high to cool the refrigerator and to test the interior temperature readings. I have 1 thermometer in each section. I have loosely filled the refrigerator with nonperishables since it is in the garage. I wanted to see what the other reviews were referring to in regards to temperature regulation. I realized that the freezer is efficiently in cooling. The refrigerator section struggles to maintain a low temperature. After observing the air flow from the freezer to the refrigerator I realized that there are several design flaws. (1) The venting from the freezer to the refrigerator is small compared to my previous one that had a circular venting area that allowed much more cold air to enter the refrigerator section. This small rectangular hole doesn't allow enough air to cool to keep up with the door open to take things out, then to recover. The motor will have to run longer to maintain the required internal temp. (2) The glass shelves are pretty and easy to clean BUT they do not allow air to easily pass through to the lower level to keep every thing nice and cold. This is a comparison to the grated shelves which allow much air flow to pass. (2) Even if the manufacturer wanted to have glass shelves, it would have been better to have two pieces of glass for a shelf rather than one, because the two parts would have a space in the middle allowing air to travel from top to bottom without obstruction. My personal conclusion is that this refrigerator could have better circulation ability to help move the air throughout the refrigerator. There are two many obstructions to make this happen efficiently. Hence when the refrigerator is opened and then closed it takes longer to recover the cold temp. It will have to work harder and longer to keep up. Since this refrigerator is in the garage and is a second refrigerator, I will use this refrigerator for the freezer section and refrigerator with nonperishables (no dairy or other items that require a maintainance temp of 40 degrees). If I buy another refrigerator in the future, I will pay more attention to the items I observed. This is fine for a second refrigerator. I would require more cooling in my next purchase. This is my personal opinion, any one can have another. Have a good day.

      Temperature control is a problem.

I bought this after our 20nyear old fridge started going bad. It's bigger than the old one which was nice because we have 3 people living here. Anyway, quick pros and cons Pros. 1. Large fridge. 2. Decent shelving. You can fit gallons of milk in the door if you need to as well as the middle and top shelf. 3. Cheese drawer slides left and right. Neat. 4. LED lighting. 5. Large freezer. Cons 1. The temperature control is kind of bad. We've had the fridge for a bit now and at full max cooling the freezer is at exactly 0F and the fridge is exactly 40F. That's not very promising. I would've considered that okay for the default setting (it's a little touch panel with 5 settings, 3 recommended), but at maximum? I'm not entirely sure what to do about it. We don't have a space to put our food in order to do a refund, replacement, or an exchange. We intentionally bought a top freezer refrigerator because one would assume that they would've figured that out by now, given how old the design is. I will likely reach out to best buy for an exchange on my purchase for something a little better, but I'm disappointed in Whirlpool. This is the same fridge design your great grandparents used. How did it manage to get worse? Anyway, 2 stars from me. Nice looking fridge with good space, decent customization, and some fun little features. Minus 3 stars because my food might rot if it gets too warm in the kitchen. Fridges are a pain to replace and install.

When our old refrigerator died (it had 23 years of use), I knew it was time for a new one. We didn’t want to mess around with any complicated technology so we went for a simple top freezer model, and settled on Whirlpool. This name was synonymous with reliability in my book. Unfortunately, it appears that there has been some slippage at this manufacturer. We have had this model for 24 days now, and it has yet to cool to the proper temperature in the refrigerator for more than a couple of hours. We haven’t been able to use it for food storage yet. So far there have been two service calls with one more scheduled for this week. It is unbelievable to me to purchase a very simple, brand-new model of a refrigerator and not be able to use it for three weeks. I have to constantly monitor and record the temperatures in order to provide more detail to the service representative. I asked today if we could just have a replacement but was provided no estimate on when or if they might happen. To say I am disappointed is putting it mildly. I was told I can’t have a new one yet. I am almost to the point of just wanting my money back and buying a totally different brand. If anyone has any advice on this please comment and let me know. This is also a warning – for food safety reasons, refrigerators need to be below 40 degrees and freezers at 0. I would hate to see anyone buy this brand new, not check it out as thoroughly as I did, and become ill. Another factor to this is that it’s quite inconvenient to schedule service, since I work full time and the service technicians are only available during the day, during the week. I buy everything through Best Buy and I don't blame them for this, I believe it is the Manufacturer's responsibility to fix this.

Bought after intensive review of refrigerator ratings in Consumer Reports & on internet and many visits to stores to examine & measure models. --- Have had for 4 months. Very good refrigerator. Solid construction. Glass shelves (not plastic). I did not want a unit with huge door shelves intended to hold gallon size milk jugs which take away from interior shelves depth & this model has nicely sized door shelves w/o gallon storage. Took some experimenting, but good temperature control maintaining 33-37 degrees in refrigerator and 0 to -5 deg in freezer. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND IT. -- However, did not give it 5-stars for following reasons: 1. temperature control dial is at front of of frog on a bulky housing that contains frig light & protrudes down from roof of frig compartment , partially obstructing top shelf space. The temp dial does not have click stops and brushing against it as you reach into frog can change temp setting. 2. Because of design and location of compressor & other components, the depth of bottom of frog compartment is shallower than higher up, & as result the chiller bins are severely restricted in depth to rear & don't hold a lot of meat, produce & fruit, etc. 3. Good refrig door shelves, as noted above, but only three adjustable shelves provided even though there is space for four. 4. The large freezer compartment provides lots of volume, but has only one non-adjustable shelf (wire, not glass). It ought to have two freezer shelves. I bought it w/o the optional ice maker, which I did not want, but It came without regular ice-cube trays & without special freezer rack for i.e. cube trays & no option to get them. (I had to supply these myself.) Also, no light in freezer compartment. -- Overtall, a very good model that I recommend, but has the noted (for me) deficiencies, hence the 4-star rating.

Ok here's the deal.. I recently purchased a whirlpool fridge from bestbuy..I had to replace my old fridge which was 16 years old. It also was a whirlpool,it was great never any issues. The problem with the new one was on the fridge part it never went below 40 degrees and it was on the max setting and that had me really concerned, now granted I'm a 2 person family so there wasn't a lot of stuff in the unit. And of course I didn't read the reviews on the unit before the purchase and yes Best Buy was going to trade it out with brand new one! But the day before then new one was going to be delivered I canceled the order cause I read the reviews on it and there were a lot of complaints on the same issue I had which was not cold enough! So I went with a different brand! And also to add I wanted the swing of the doors to be switched and when the installers did this the fridge door would not seal correctly! What a headache it became so I had them switch it back and in that process the installer stripped some screws! So I had to ( as the customer) use my tools and got the stripped screw out my self!! Remember consumers these installers are contracted people and I'm not sure if they really know what they are doing so please beware ! Now I'm not knocking bestbuy for this but it's the product they are saling to us the consumers !!! So yes I'm not happy.. yes I will agree it was a great price but the overall quality sucks!!!!

Just took delivery, purchased at, and installed by Best Buy. The delivery/install guys were great - no complaint there. So far, the unit seems to keep the fridge cold, and the freezer really cold - so I'm OK with that. I was really shocked to find that the Monochromatic Stainless Steel we paid a big up-charge for was just the doors. Both sides, and the top, are a gray putty, non-stainless. If we ordered the white version, the whole dang thing would be white - saw it in the store. If we ordered the black, the whole thing would be black - saw it in the store. Why, when paying an up-charge, doesn't that follow for stainless??? The 2nd problem, which is being worked on, is the freezer door gasket. It was badly aligned when the door was made, and since it's a "foam-in-place" gasket, it's actually part of the door, rather than a separate replaceable part. So, we're waiting for a replacement door to be installed. I understand that happens, and I assume Best Buy will take care of it. HOWEVER, only one surface being the stainless, for which we paid an up-charge, has left us will a really bad opinion.
