Synopsis
The fancy footwork and star appeal of Gregory Hines as Raymond, an exiled American, and the powerful grace of Mikhail Baryshnikov as Nikolai, a defector, combine with a great production design to carry this otherwise thinly-stretched tale of intrigue. With a stellar supporting cast (Isabella Rossellini as Raymond's wife, Helen Mirren as Nikolai's lover, and Jerzy Skolimowski, the Polish director, as a wily KGB agent), the film has a few excellent moments. Nikolai has defected from the former USSR some time in the past. While on a trip, his plane spectacularly crashes on a runway in Siberia. Trapped in the country he had escaped, he is brought to stay with Raymond, an American who defected during the Vietnam war. Just a little cold war dance around........
June 8, 2017A little defection here, a little dancing there, Two great dancers paired up in unusual surroundings. Mikhail vs. Gregory are a pleasure to watch. "Gotta dance!"

Great movie, great price
December 28, 2013A classic film, enhanced by a "Making Of" short that reveals the film's conception and offers a glimpse behind the scenes. Although the two male stars are not in the "Making Of" (Gregory Hines had passed away, and Baryshnikov's absense was not explained), it's a nice little featurette. The film itself is an incredible blend of politics, suspense, and dance. Great acting all around, too. And Helen Mirren is a gem!

I saw this movie in the early 80's when it came out. It was not available to rent or buy for many years. Finally available. Just watched it and it is FABULOUS!! The usual dance greats were amazing . My children loved it as well. Even though it was a pretty complex plot for young kids. Anyone that loves dance needs to see this once again. Baryshnikov is a dream and Hines is an all time great. Greatly missed. Enjoy
