After the death of her criminal husband (Liam Neeson), Veronica (Viola Davis) is threatened by the Chicago gangsters he was indebted to. Veronica recruits the widows of her late husband's fallen accomplices (Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki and Cynthia Erivo) to pull off a heist in order to pay the rival gang and get revenge for their husbands' killings. Directed by Steve McQueen. Co-written by McQueen and Gillian Flynn. Based upon the 1983 British TV series of the same name.~Phil Griffin
This was something different for me. Really impressed with the plot and the build up for this movie. A step up form the back in the day set it off. Not trying to compare. This is a different movie all together. But the women that played the role of their characters was awesome.
Steve McQueen came roaring onto the scene almost a decade ago now with "Hunger", one of the best films I've seen in recent years. Since he's made "Shame" and his Oscar-winning "12 Years a Slave." Each film different but distinctly McQueen, "Widows" is a whole new ballgame. Perhaps less action heavy than someone unfamiliar with his work would expect, "Widows" is a character-focused heist film that left me 95% satisfied. I'd recommend to anyone with the caveat that they know they're in for less action and more character than the trailers would have you believe.
