Doesn't bring back the glory days...

The Receiver: It's a good receiver for a decent price. Easy to read with 10 different presets that are easy to change from one to another. My biggest complaint with the receiver is that it doesn't tell you what preset you are on, it instead tells you channel number. My pre merger receiver told me that information. Nice signal. I hardly ever lost it in the month or so that I've had it. Easy to install. Can use either FM or Auxiliary input for your car. Both sound good but of course Auxiliary is more clear and cleaner bass. In Closing the Receiver gets a 3 out of 5 stars. Nothing special but nothing really hindering it either. SiriusXM Service: I used to be a huge satellite radio fan, what wasn't to like compared to FM? Commercial free, uncensored and never have to change a station no matter where you drive. Started out with Sirius and then switch to XM. Things happened and had to cancel my service shortly before the merger took place. I had fond memories of those days. Did buying this receiver bring back the glory days? Unfortunately no. Todays landscape is alot different then back then, with the invention of smart phones and the price dropping on smartphone data. SiriusXM doesn't have anything that is exclusive music wise, sure they have Howard if that's still sells subscriptions, I don't think it does. All the music you want to hear on Sirius you can find a station to play that online, whether that be a real station that also broadcasts online or something like Pandora or even SiriusXM sells a online only subscription. I just don't see satellite radio being worth the price of admission anymore. Even if I stream the exact same amount as what I'd listen to SiriusXM, I feel after the price of the receiver and subscription, I'd still come out ahead by streaming online, instead of subscribing to SiriusXM. This setup is cheap, easy to install, and can be transferred to an indoor radio setup just as easily. My only three gripes are these: 1) The radio quality itself is 'tinny' sounding, even on a newer OEM sound system. The volume controls are also tricky to work with using an existing stereo, which makes me not want to touch the volume settings when I get it set where I want it. 2) The satellite receiver itself has no way of securing to anything - it just has little rubber nubs on the base, which do practically nothing. Considering you have to have the receiver in an unobstructed location, such as your dash - where I have mine - if you take a hard turn, it goes flying. I have considered buying a small roll of VHB tape online and using that to secure it down, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. 3) The anchor pivot that the radio sits in does not stay where you set it, even if you tighten the nut around the pivot ball as tight as it can go; So the radio ends up jostling around and slumps down, finally resting with the screen pointed at the ground. Irritating, but tolerable. I may have just gotten a bad anchor - it happens. I have numerous gripes about the Sirius/XM service itself, but that's another episode. All in all, this is a great little setup and includes everything you need to get satellite radio set up in your vehicle quickly and easily. I would recommend this model for the price. If you want something that gives you more information, has more display options, etc., then don't buy this cheaper model - go with the more expensive models.

Yes, this is an XM receiver. I bought it to replace my Sirius receiver that had bad antenna connections. Some of the reviews were scaring me saying that you don't get Sirius channels, but I am glad I bought it anyways. I am using the antenna as before and signal has not cut out once, when my old one was cutting out constantly - now I know it was the receiver and not the antenna. I get an even clearer reception than before also. I get every channel I did with Sirius receiver, including Howard Stern channels, and then even more that I did not get before that are only available on XM. As far as I am concerned, I am getting an even better deal with more channels. The only down side to this receiver is that it does not come with a remote control, but with the dash mount I can easily reach it to push any buttons I need to.

This is a great radio for the price. It's all you need for your car. But...... i am a sirius subscriber. My old radio broke so i bought this one. I called sirius to activate and it turns out i can no longer get howard stern on this radio because this is an xm radio so i can only get the xm radio package. So ofcourse i said the radio states sirius/xm on the best buy site and doesnt say anything about the xm only package. The woman was polite but had no answer except the avtivation code in this radio is an xm activation code. So if howard stern or sirius specific chanels are important to you buy another radio. WTF SIRIUS.

We love our ONYX radio. This particular one is on our 2007 HONDA GL 1800 Motorcycle. We would be LOST without it, and haven't been without it for 120,000 miles! We started with a ROADY, then in 2011, we upgraded to a ONYX. About a month ago (March 2015), our radio was cutting out, so we liked the ONYX so well, we purchased another one. When we were installing the new one, we found a lose wire, so we found out there was nothing wrong with the radio we had just replaced. OH WELL, we just kept the new one, and enjoy every mile with our favorite music. By the way, we also have XM Satellite radio in both of our other vehicles 2006 Silverado and 2006 Impala ever since we purchased them. It would be difficult to live without them. Great product...

    The Merger Has Helped

In the beginning their was XM and Sirius. You signed up for the service you liked based on their offerings. XM Baseball and Sirius Football. A lot of the other content was similar, with just different names. But what set the two services apart if you did not care about Baseball or Football was the receivers that both companies sold. Sirius had the better receiver. When Sirius found an open FM band, it held with no station bleeding. The XM receivers had a lot of bleeding and static.. Well all that is over with the Onyx EZ. Once it finds an open band it closed that band out to any type of bleeding. The merger has really helped XM improve their receivers.Every 4 moths Best Buy will have the EX on sale for 20 bucks. So be patient and then buy!

So I changed cars and my new vehicle did not have satellite radio. The model I purchased did not have it, but I could have added the hardware (400 ~ 500). I decided to save myself some money and opt for a simpler solution. This does the job and then some. The install is tricky since you have to run the antenna cable in a way that looks good and does not disrupt. After I did that, the set up was straight forward. The antenna has a powerful magnet and latches to the roof really good. I commute daily on the interstate and have never had an issue. However this is XM programming only. There are some Sirius channels like Howards Stern and Sports, but I didnt need them. For the Sirius XM programming go to the next level model.

Inexpensive way to add SAT radio to your ride

When this unit is on sale, it is a very inexpensive way to add satellite radio to your car. The cost of the subscription is another story (but there are ways to get inexpensive service). I wanted something portable that I could move between cars, depending on which vehicle I was using for a long drive. In spite what the instructions say, I am able to get 2-3 bars of signal strength just by placing the antenna "puck" on my dash. If wireless FM transmitters don't work well in your car, you will likely experience the same issues with this unit. If you have AUX input in your car, then this unit will work fine.
