Banjo-Kazooie Fans Rejoice!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a great game for those who want to relive the nostalgia that Banjo-Kazooie give you. It still has the pain points of the old 3D platformers though (odd camera angles, depth of attack and moderate controls), only reason why I gave it 4 out of 5 instead of 5. I was really hoping that they would have addressed that right off the bat, but they stayed true to where they came from and nonetheless delivered a very entertaining game that brings back memories of easier times.

Oldschool Fun for Old & New Gamers
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Yooka Laylee turned out to be exactly what developers Playtonic promised it to be during their successful Kickstarter campaign, for good or ill. The game is a throwback to the exploratory, item-collection focused, mascot platformers that saw their heyday in the Nintendo 64 era. Fans of Banjo Kazooie, Jak & Daxter, Mario 64, Donkey Kong 64, Chameleon Twist, Glover, Toy Story 2, etc, will be right at home here. It's a celebration of late 90's and early 2000's design sensibilities dressed up with a modern coat of paint. Yooka Laylee provides the perfect opportunity for older game fans to experience a new game fueled by warm-and-fuzzy nostalgia, but it's also a chance to show a new generation of gamers the sorts of games that we used to play when we were their age. It's brightly colored, good natured, and full of fun characters. Perfect for enjoying with younger members of the family. On the technical side, Yooka Layle can be a tad frustrating. The camera, in particular does not feel right, and it may not always present the best angles for what challenge you hope to tackle next. Expect to spend a fair bit of time manipulating it manually to prep for tricky jumps. Jumping is serviceable, but it does lack sense of inertia that made Mario 64 such a masterwork. Overall these are small issues in what has proven to be a fun, engaging game that was clearly built with alot of heart.

"Old School" Platformer
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Yooka Laylee is a Playstation, Nintendo 64 era style platformer through and through. If you don't like Banjo Kazooie or Spyro the Dragon mechanics and controls you should move on even at the cheaper price. Like the Youtube personality Jim Sterling says, its a platformer that has none of the improvements modern games in the genre have made. While I agree with that statement, I still get nostalgia for my childhood while I play and there is enough humor and range of activities to keep me going. I think if the development team would have modernized it a little more it would have been more popular and a better game overall.

Brings back the nostalgia factor
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This game isn’t without its flaws. The camera is probably its worst enemy and the controls could stand to be a little tighter, however, in a world where violent shooters reign supreme, a game like this is a breath of fresh air. While not on par with platformers of old such as Ratchet & Clank, Jack and Daxter, Sly Cooper, Mario, etc., it does have a charm reminiscent of those games. I truly enjoyed my time playing it once I actually gave it a chance. It’s fun to play and the writers have a good sense of humor. It’s especially good for kids.

If you like collectathons, play it
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This game has a poor reputation for what it is, but it's a throwback title to 3d platformer collecting games a la Banjo Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64. If collecting arbitrary McGuffins doesn't sound appealing, avoid this game. If collecting for the sake of it sounds fun, then buy this and enjoy. At launch, it had significant issues with the camera, but an Update patch has been release, significantly reducing issues people had, allowing more control. A fun game in a forgotten genre.

For lovers of old school 3D platformers
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Yooka-Laylee does what it sets out to do-- create a 3D platformer that hearkens back to the era of collect-a-thon-style games like Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64. Though the camera disappoints and some sections of the game aggravate, overall, Yooka-Laylee is an enjoyable romp, though it might be too old school for kids (mostly in the challenge department).

Old school collectathon platformer
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is an old school throwback to 90's collectathon platformers like Banjo Kazooie. You play as a lizard with a bat on its back, which allows you to perform various abilities like rolling around on the ground or flying. There are 5 levels: a tropical island, a snow/ice level, a swamp, a casino, and a futuristic space themed level. There is also a hub overworld. Each stage contains hundreds of quills and pages to collect, as well as bosses and various retro-style arcade challenges to conquer. I would say the first 80-90% of Yooka-Laylee is decent fun. The controls are a bit wonky, but there is a certain charm and the worlds themselves are interesting to explore (they can get quite expansive). The last 10%, however, is where the game becomes a slog as the janky controls start interfering with the pixel perfect precision the game unfairly demands of you in some of the harder challenges. As long as you're OK with not 100%ing the game and can recognize when to quit as the game starts to turn unfun, I would recommend this.
