Synopsis

Zrubavel
Filmmaker Shmuel Beru offers a powerful look at the culture of Ethiopian Jews in Israel in this independent drama. While they were born and raised in Israel, the Zrubavel Family are of Ethiopian heritage and find themselves caught between their love for the land they call home and the racism they face every day. The head of the family struggles to support his wife and children as a janitor, but he has big dreams for his kids. However, the youngsters don't always want the same sort of future as their dad; one son rejects his parents' desire to send him to a well-respected school because he knows the principal is racially prejudiced, and another is wary of father's ambitions that he should join the Air Force after the death of one of his siblings who was serving in the army. Another son aspires to become a man of the Cloth, the only daughter in the family has fallen for a boy who is rejected by her folks because he's a distant relative and the youngest wants to be a filmmaker and documents life in the neighborhood with his video camera. Zrubavel received its North American premiere at the 2009 Palm Springs International Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
