Better than a traditional alarm, but a bit lacking

Posted by: from Ahndyortieublame, IL on 10/13/2011I have found this to be better than a traditional alarm clock, but I have mixed feelings. The light begins to gradually come on about half an hour before the set alarm time, and sometimes I wake up to the light at that point, even though I wanted another half hour of sleep. So I end up rolling on my side away from the alarm clock so that I can't see the light. Also, what others have noted about the repetitive bird sounds is true. It's the exact same sequence every morning, so you start to think of it as the alarm clock sound instead of a natural bird choir. Another thing to note is that if you didn't get enough sleep, you are still going to hit the snooze button and have a hard time waking up. It's still better than a traditional alarm clock, but it could be better, especially considering the ridiculous price. Understand that this is basically a radio alarm clock plus a lamp with a dimmer switch on a timer. So that should be about, hmm, $30-40? There are some features to play with that might make my experience better, i.e. an adjustable brightness and multiple wakeup sounds. But for $100 they could have squeezed in a random bird sound effect generator and an adjustable time period for the lamp to start getting bright. Before buying this product, I checked a lot of reviews and this seems to be one of the best 'sunrise alarm clock' devices at this price point.

Works great, could use more features

Posted by: GeeQMagnisi from Honolulu, HI on 09/21/2011For what its designed for, THIS WORKS. I need to wake up at 4 am, and the days I wake up with this, I wake up right.
Only preference of change would be to add other wake-up sounds. The birds are great, but the sound starts to get repetitious. I would prefer random sounds to allow the mind to react to the surprise on a daily basis.

Not sure if I'm a convert yet...

Posted by: Nikta from San Francisco on 02/07/2011Some days I feel like I wake up gradually and feel more refreshed. Other days I don't even stir until the "birds" start chirping really loudly. And it seems a bit overpriced. I might recommend it.

Great lamp

Posted by: Brycen from Seattle, WA on 02/01/2011Ever since I started using the Philips wake up lamp, I wake up less grouchy since it's a gradual wake up and not the sudden throng like the standard alarms. I wake up to birds chirping. I wish they were a bit more creative and allowed for more variations. The same chirping tune is short and repeats quickly. More variation would have been nice. It's been a more that I've used it and do notice that I'm "happier" waking up.

Posted by: 1GaryG from SC on 01/25/2011Light mechanism is very nice, controls could be more user friendly. Light dimmer and alarm volume buttons could be easier to use.
All in all, pretty nice. Price of $100 is high

I think this will change my life!
5
Posted by: JenN7 from Scottsdale, AZ on 12/16/2010I have Seasonal Affective Disorder, but living in Arizona, it usually isn't a problem--until my work schedule changed and I started having to wake up and leave before sunrise. All winter so far, I have been in a total haze and have been having to set up to 8 alarms of three different devices to jar me awake enough to get out of bed.
I finally picked this guy up this week, and for me, the results are really amazing. The combination of gradually increasing light and the cool and serene "kettle drum" music that makes up the "beep" alarm on the device woke me up without any trauma and I got out of bed right away. I usually hit the snooze over and over again! I had time to stop for coffee today on my way to work!
One of the benefits of this model (and why I sprung for it at BB instead of the previous model for cheaper at my warehouse store) is that this model allows you to change the bulb yourself. A definite plus!
Features-wise, it's a little spartan, but I got it for a specific reason--the quality light alarm and relability of the brand--not for frills, so it serves my needs perfectly. The device's appearance is unobtrusive and modern...it's not a showpiece, but it's not an eyesore either.
Bottom line, I'm functioning better than i have in a long time and I'm in a much better mood. I'm drowsy, but not grumpy or groggy. I just need more hours of sleep now...
I think this is one of the best investments I've made for my health since purchasing a higher quality mattress a few years ago.

Worth the price

Posted by: llb from TN on 10/29/2010I have used a sunrise simulator to wake up the last few years during the winter months. I had to buy a new one this season ( an unfortunate accident befell my last one) and I choose the Philips Wake Up Light Clock. The reviews were good and I was especially interested in the experiement that Philips is conducting in a town near the North Pole. It's called Wake up the Town ( or something to that affect). It is set up on Facebook, so that anyone can follow the experiement and the feedback from the townspeople is unedited. That to me suggests a high confidence in their product.
I have used it the last two mornings and I am very pleased. I am waking up gradually and I have felt refreshed both mornings. I fully expect this to continue as long as I use it. Sunrise Simulation is an amazing way to wake up. It is so much nicer than being jarred awake by sudden sound. Although I have only used this specific product for two days, I have used sunrise or progressive wake up techniques for several years during the winter months. Well worth the price.
The only thing I would change on this clock is that I would want the sound to start earlier than 90 seconds before time to wake up. I had to adjust the level of brightness that I wanted for wake up, but that is to be expected. Other than that it works as promised and is easy to program.
