Best Steak Ever!

I ordered this Precision Cooker after reading a lot about how Sous Vide works and Anova got it done right! The app is very intuitive and walks you through how long to cook and at what temperature to get your desired doneness. My first cook on it was a 10oz filet and it was the juiciest steak I have ever tasted! 45 minutes in the water took it to 133 Degrees then a minute on each side searing on the stove top and it was a perfect Medium to Medium Rare!

Simple and Accurate

Such an easy way to turn a bad cut of meat into a tasty, fork-tender masterpiece with very little effort.
For example, you can go to Kroger and get the worst-looking strip steak or even a skirt. Add salt and pepper, seal it in a vacuum bag, then put it in a pot of water with the sous vide cooker for 1-4 hours at whatever temperature you prefer your steak - and viola! The steak comes out cooked through and through at whatever temperature you desire and no more.
You like rare, medium, well-done - it's perfect. You only need to finish it by searing the meat either in a skillet or on the grill for no more than a minute just to give it the look you're used to. Otherwise the steak tastes great but looks unappetizing because it was cooked to the same temperature all the way through. That means the outside comes out looking like the inside.
Pork, Beef, Chicken, vegetables, whatever.
Just make sure you get a Foodsaver vacuum bag sealer and have a large pot (at least 3.5 gallons). It could be a stock pot or (better) a clear, rectangular, polycarbonate container like the ones made by Rubbermaid. I believe the maximum temperature is 210F degrees, so these things are appropriate.

Great (luxury) kitchen gadget

Can you cook good meals without a sous vide cooker? Yes.
But once you've used one of them to make a perfect medium rare steak, will you want to? Probably not.
The precise cooking temperature measured to a tenth of a degree makes sure you aren't overcooking something in the water baths. The wifi app has all the necessary temps and times built in, so once the water hits the proper temp, you drop the food in and walk away. Things you must have to make this worthwhile: 1) a vacuum-sealer for foods you will be cooking, and 2) a large stock pot or water tub. I did five 1.5" inch-thick steaks last night in a large stock pot, all cooked to a medium rare, and finished them in a cast-iron skillet for about a minute on each side. Everyone raved their steaks were perfectly done.

Very Good--Software could make it better
Posted by: Brain from: on
Really like the Sous Vide method of cooking. This device works great and the food comes out perfect. I'd like to see more ways to use the cooker in an automated or timer controlled way via the app. This would be very easy to do with a software update. Right now, the app will let you control the cooker remotely but won't allow you to set it up based on a specific time of the day. I'd give it 5 stars if they make the app more powerful.

Easy to use

This Anova sous vide machine is very easy to use, but the app could be a lot better. I purchased the Anova over the Chef Steps Joule sous vide because the Anova has manual controls while the Chef Steps can only be controlled using an app. While the Joule has a much better app with more recipes and more functions and the Joule machine itself is smaller, has a magnetic base and looks slicker. I still chose the Anova over the Joule because of the Anova's manual controls. Also, the Anova has been around for years and it has been time tested to last.

This thing is great. I've been using it at least four times a week since I got it about a month ago. Best pork chops I have ever cooked. Best chicken breasts I have ever cooked. Best anything really.
So far, I've tried Rib-Eye, NY Strip, Pork chops, Chicken Breasts, Turkey Breasts, Chuck Tender Steak, Flat Iron steaks.
There are so many great things about this other than cooking at precision.
One thing I love is there is hardly any mess compared to the more traditional methods.
Another is the set it and forget it way of cooking. I'll take some chicken breasts, season them and freeze them. Then on weekends at breakfast time, I'll throw them in the water, go about my day, and when it's time for lunch, they are there waiting for me.
For weekdays I figured that I wouldn't have enough time to cook dinner with this after work. But with the phone App I can start pre-heating the water as I'm leaving work. By the time i get home from my long commute the water is ready and I can throw my chicken or strip steak in for an hour and a half
While I enjoy the rib-eye and strip steaks those can get expensive. This thing does really well at cooking those cheap tougher cuts of beef such as the mock tenders or steaks from chuck. Only issue is the time it takes to cook those.
Last night at breakfast I started cooking a flat iron steak, which I've only had once before cooked on a skillet. I started the cook at breakfast, went to work and came home for dinner to the most tender steak I've ever had. It was half of a 1.58 lb steak which cost about $8. So at $4 a meal, it's much cheaper (about half) than a strip steak or rib-eye and tastes so good.
I've only had it a short time, hoping it lasts a long time.

Really nice Sous Vide machine but could be better
Posted by: kihe409 from: bellflower on
I really like this sous vide machine but I'm enjoying new dish and this thing makes cooking them a breeze. I like the phone app notifications when my food is done and everything but Joule is probably a better machine with additional features like magnetic base. the Nova has to be clamped on to the side of a pot but most pots are not at tall as it needs to be to be securely held in place.

The cooker is great, not the app.

While I love my precision cooker and the food I make the application is pitiful at best. I use my cooker 4-5 times a week and I now just set the temp on the device and monitor the time myself. Truly, the only negative on this product is the useless app.

This is a very scientific method of cooking. While I've only tried a few food items, I can honestly say I am impressed. The steaks were melt in your mouth tender with a minimal amount of finishing with a culinary torch. I would recommend this item especially for apartment dwellers whom in most places cannot grill.
