No Audio? Garmin, what were you thinking?!
Posted by: DitchDoctor from: on
I'd ordered this directly from Garmin, and was happy to see it when it arrived. The mount is much improved. First of all, its much smaller than the suction cup mount you're used to, plus it's adhesive, so it won't be falling off if installed properly (they recommend letting the adhesive bind 24 hours before you place the camera).
Day and night video are superb quality. Like its predecessors, it will automatically protect the video file if an impact is detected, and a manual file protection is also available if there's something you want to save but doesn't activate the G-sensor.
The forward-collision warning is a fantastic addition, especially for someone I know who has a habit of following too closely.
For the above: 5 stars.... However...
Who decided there shouldn't be audio recording? Say you are making a turn, put your turn signal on, slow down, and get hit from behind. With no audio, it's still your word (that the blinker was on) against the other driver (who will say it wasn't). Audio recording should pick up the click from the turn signal. Was your kid distracted: singing along with her latest favorite song? Talking on the cell phone? Who knows? After a wreck, did the other driver run up and apologize and make a statement like "Sorry, it was all my fault... I should have... "? Disrespectful to the officer who pulled him over, jeopardizing his safety? No way to prove he was or wasn't.
Garmin says the microphone was not included on the US version, but is available on the European version. Why, oh why?
You really blew it with this, Garmin.

Good device but there are a few "buts"
Posted by: CCrew from: Winchester, VA on
Does what it says it does. Essentially once set up, it just works. If you're looking for a device that just works, it's the device for you.
1: It has no audio. None. Owners manual says it does but per a call to Garmin only the overseas units do.
2: it saves the video in 1 minute clips. You can assemble them with their player software but only with the device hooked to USB. And it's not easy to remove the unit from the windshield AND you have to realign when installing
3: Resolution is good, but not sharp enough to read a license plate even when enhanced unless the car is sitting still.
4: Power cord is cig lighter plug. Can't use USB to power because unit then starts in mass storage mode.
5: Traffic camera data is a trial, not as it's implied "free".
Not a bad unit, good Garmin quality, American company. That's why a middle of the road review.

So far so good..
Posted by: jeff from: on
I bought this and the padded friction mount for my car, as I didn't want to mount this direct to the windshield and have the cord run down to the 12v acc point, also so i can bring the unit in our other vehicle if needed.
I also grabbed a class 10 16gb micro sd for it since it came with a 4gb card.
The Garmin website has a video compiler\editor that was also pretty useful it puts all the video together and shows the vehicle location on a google map during playback. Playback on my laptop is able to see oncoming car license plates about 75% of the time when you freeze it.
The warning for getting to close to the car in front of you is kind of sensitive, I am going to see if I can set it to be less. I park in my garage so I haven't had any high heat issues.
It doesn't record sound, which I didn't want anyway so not a problem for me.
I would have gave it 5 stars if they didn't cheap out with the included 4gb card.
Overall I am happy with this purchase.

Good camera but no audio and lack of features
Posted by: Urgirlinmyjetta from: on
I had purchased 2 garmin dash cam 20's because of the clearance sales Best Buy had, but after some problems with them I decided to upgrade to the new and "better" dash cam 35....well immediately after purchase I realized there was an extreme lack of functions in the settings menu. My biggest problem was when I brought The camera inside to review the footage there was no audio, I thought I might've done something wrong but after checking the settings and doing a little bit more research online I come to find out that there is no audio on this specific device.....why would you have audio recording on one device and not the other?.....

Excellent dash cam features and quality for price!
Posted by: Jheily from: Minnesota on
This dash cam provides nearly all the features one would look for in a device designed for driver safety. The display can be set to dim or stay live. On the display bottom, and display recording, are the date and time, gps location and vehicle speed. Essential if being used in defense of your driving. The dash cam also provides collision avoidance that can be adjusted to your liking and a red light camera notification.
The greatest feature I found was the recording. When I press the video record button, the dash cam records the previous 1 1/2 minutes and continues to record for an additional 1 1/2 minutes. This does create a rather large mp4 file around 180MB but can be easily edited. There is also a snapshot button that allows pics to be taken for additional accident information.
A suction cup holder would be nice if it were included but the unit does come with an adhesive mount. Also the SD card is only 4GB which can record two events without overwriting.
I drive semi over the road, which can be rough, but the image quality is excellent. I can take the SD card and insert in my tablet and view the video with no additional software. I can pause the video and pinch zoom to read license plates. Can't ask for anything more!

Great American Backed Dash Cam
Posted by: CharlestonGuy from: on
Great overall unit. If you have any questions, you can call Garmin and they speak American English and they are accessible. Easy set up. Mount adhesive is strong so be certain where you want the mount. Garmin has it's own software download for easy video management. Be sure to connect to computer first so you can upgrade dash cam to most current software and then download Garmin's software on your computer. Those who complain about not having an audio feature are narrow thinking. You don't want audio recorded on a dash cam. You don't want conversations and cell use recorded. This could be a liability on you. Some have said they want to record a police officer's comments when they pull you over. If so, then turn on the video on your smart phone and it will record audio. The objective for a dash cam is to record the video through the windshield. Unit shows date, time, GPS coordinates, your speed and the post speed limit on interstates and state highways, which is only visible on the playback on a computer. I ordered the 5 meter extended cord for a hidden installation. There was a complaint about the screen crosshairs always appearing in the middle of the screen. Now that was a stupid complaint. The crosshaisr allows you to look at the screen and always know that it is centered. Once set, you should not be looking at the screen when you drive anyway. Two years ago I bought a cheap $50 Chinese made unit off Amazon, to learn my way around these dash cams. Garmin is sold at Best Buy, with a 10 day return policy if you don't like it. I have purchased two and have them up and running for 2 months. Great units. I removed the 4GB micro SD card and inserted a 64GB, Class 10, micro SD card. Dash Cam generates video in 1 minute clips, time stamped. And if needed, you can hit the Save function button and it will save the prior minute, exiting minute, and following minute on the SD card. American backed unit by Garmin. And the price of $199 is fair and reasonable.

Great picture quality even at night but there is no audio!!!
Never heard of a dash cam with no audio. They should let you know that up front. The Garmin software to view the video downloaded easily onto windows 7 and worked well. However who wants a cash cam with no audio sound? It goes back to Best Buy tomorrow, and the hunt for decent dash cam will continue.

Excellent dash cam
Posted by: Star8486 from: Virginia on
This dash cam works as advertised. But there are a few things to keep in mind before buying this camera. The memory card that comes with the dash cam is way to small, need to upgrade to 64 gigs right away. The mounting options are limited to the windshield with the enclosed mount. However Garmin has a wide range of mounts that work with their dash cams. I bought a suction mount that works for my motorcycle. Continuous recording as advertised is not exactly true, the dash cam records in segments of about 2 minutes each so in playback you see the video stop and start for each segment. The crash warning and speed camera function works great. Great video, very clear and wide angle lens covers the entire scene in front of the car.

Overall a very nice dash cam, with excellent record quality. I bought this one over the Garmin 25 as it has the potential to stop you from hitting the car in-front (able to detect the distance between your car and the one in front).
I have mine on the medium setting, but it is not reliable, but I just need it to work once. There is also a feature in the device that lets you know if you are in a speed camera area, which is pretty nice.
I have read that you have to pay for this service, but right now mine is working. Maybe in a 1yr this will change.
All in all, great device with great image quality. Probably the best reason to get this. But it also comes with some nice perks with the collision warning system (works sometimes), and the speed camera location warnings.
