This is what should have been packed in

The charging grip lets you use the provided USB-C cable to recharge an extra set of Joycons. It does not come with a wall charger, but you can plug it into the USB port on the Switch. This really should have been packed in with the Switch instead of the chargerless grip that came with it.

An unnecessary accessory
Posted by: carsonccc from: on
I purchased this item to go along with my joycons fort the Nintendo Switch so that they were always charged. However, it's sort of an unnecessary accessory considering the fact that the joycons keep a charge for up to 20 hours of battery life. Also, the USB cable length for the charging grip is short, such to the point that you would be required to sit right in front of your big screen TV while playing a game.

You get the charging grip plus the USB charger. This cable can also be used to charge the Console.

Nothing wrong with the product but I think it's unnecessary. The Joy-con battery life is 20 hours. Even if you have one set from buying the console, you can simply put them back into the dock and charge. If you have two sets of joy-cons this accessory is absolutely unnecessary as one set can charge while the other is in the regular grip that came with the console. Unless you plan on constantly playing 4 player games on the go, you really only need two joy-con sets at home in any of the games available or upcoming, after that you can just buy a Pro Controller for a cheaper price and that holds a 40 hour battery charge and is far superior in comfort.

Misleading accessory description by Nintendo

The charging grip doesn't not work like an external battery for your joy-cons, they just charge it.
So if you have more than two joy-cons, I would suggest buying the charging station instead.
The charging grip should have been a packed with the System instead of the normal grip, in fact the normal grip shouldn't even be made!

It does what it advertises...charges the joy cons while you play. But why is it $30?

Kind of silly unless you have a giant long game like the new Zelda where it kind of becomes necessary to keep the game going with no interruptions.

Just for fun

You don't really need this. It's identical to what you get with the Switch except it charges and is a "clear" black color.

A must own for Nintendo Switch owners
Posted by: MrBigHands from: on
The Nintendo Switch console comes with two controllers which are used simultaneously by one player. Reportedly, they have pretty decent battery life. The problem is, the controller grip that comes with the console does not charge the "joycon" controllers. So if you're playing on the TV with the switch unit docked and your controller batteries deplete, the only way to charge them would be to click them back in the unit and wait 3 to 4 hours or switch to portable (off-TV) gaming for several hours while they slowly recover.
Your only other option would be to spend $80 on another set of joycon controllers and keep your spare pair clicked into the switch unit while you use the other pair, then swap accordingly to charge.
Likely a design to get folks to spend more money on accessories, this particular accessory should have been included with the system which makes this item a MUST OWN for every Switch owner.

Needed to Charge Extra Joycons
Posted by: JonSmith from: on
The Switch does include a grip, but the included grip does NOT charge the Joycons. Therefore if you want to get a second set of Joycons, I recommend getting this charging grip too in order to charge them easily.
