Customers are saying

Customers enjoy the Gear VR's virtual reality features, ease of use, and immersive experiences. Many also appreciate its reasonable price and compatibility with select Samsung phones, finding it fun and entertaining. However, some users point out that the device drains phone battery life and can cause the phone to become quite warm. Concerns were also raised regarding the resolution and the amount of available content.

    Not for everyone

Initially I was impressed by the VR experience with this device, but after a few days of use, started to get headaches (most likely from using it for over an hour). Also, my phone's battery drained quickly and overheated with extended use. I recommend keeping the outer cover off to allow the phone to breathe. Also, with my GS6 edge+, the resolution is not very vivid, more like 480p vice true HD...this did hinder the overall experience. I believe the GS8 will rectify this as it will be able to produce 4K resolutions. Like others mentioned, the VR apps are overpriced and there are very little if any demos prior to purchase - in other words you are stuck if you do not like the VR app you purchased. I ended up returning it and got a Amazon Fire HD 8 (outstanding tablet by the way). I will wait for the next VR for the GS8 to come out to see if the experience is different. I am sure others are amazed by this VR device, on first use most will be impressed, but after the WOW factor wears off you start to see the many flaws that other reviewers have noticed. Overall, very inexpensive way to try to the VR experience if you have one of the supported phones, but I recommend waiting for 4K content on the GS8 and the next VR gear which will support it. For now, this is ok, but just not for everyone - including me.

A great VR experience, but it is only usable for 10 - 15 minutes at a time before phone gets too hot and shuts down. Definitely not good for the phone, so it is being returned.

    Good Concept, Bad Execution

The concept behind this item is really great. The product works great for about 10 mins and then it overheats the phone, this happens every single time. I noticed this same error on the display model in the store, but thought we would give it a try on our own. You can only use programs designed or authorized by Oculous and most of them you have to pay for. I would even consider keeping the item just for a few bits of VR time but the overheating issue is a deal breaker. You literally can only use it for 10 mins, sometimes less.

It's great for 10 minutes then overheats and shuts down. Can't use it long enough to even learn much about it's capabilities.

Great concept and good fun for a very short period of time. The phone gets so hot after 5mins of usage that the phone shuts down. Not recommended if your planning to play games more than 10 mins Haven't tried to watch a movie yet though, the excitement of playing games got the better of me, which is short lived.

What a wonderful time to be alive! Actual virtual reality now available for personal use. With the aid of my Samsung Galaxy Note 5, I am transported to alien worlds, engaged in high-risk adventures, or peacefully enjoying a movie in my own personal cinema. The only downfall to the Gear VR is that it overheats my phone! I can get about a good 20 minutes of use before I receive an ominous warning that my phone needs to cool down in order to operate at optimal performance. And yes, the VR will start to glitch or "lag" unless you allow your phone to cool down. Until this unforseen issue is fixed, the VR leaves much to be desired.

With my S7, the quality is nice enough for me to suspend my disbelief. However, it has some huge design flaws: The app sizes are massive (over 200MBs average), and they can't be moved onto an SD card. That means you're going to fill your phone memory up very quickly. Without my air conditioner on, it'll overheat after an hour, and force me to cool it down. I've had to buy a gel pack to counteract this. Some games do make you dizzy after a while. But for just $99, I'd say it's worth it. Screenshots won't do it justice. Space can't be captured in flat images alone.

but not quite perfect yet. you find yourself emerged in many of the free apps but find they are only "long commercials". the other apps all cost additional money and can be on the expensive side. I would wait on this vr purchase.

I wear glasses, if you do as well, I'd recommend you to stay away from this device. Most of my friends were able to see through the lenses without any problems, but the lack of services and the fact that you need to buy a controller puts the total price pretty high up.

So I got these goggles free as part of my phone purchased through Verizon. And to me the goggles are practical you have to take your phone case off then insert your phone into the goggles and make sure that they fit then wrap the goggles around your head and make sure that they fit on properly. Then before that you have to download the apps that go to the goggles themselves mind you it burns up your battery like crazy and I just don't see how having the goggles is a practical function the VR experience for the goggles is overrated in my opinion

I'm not a fan of the VR gear. I'm not much of a gamer & the overall feel of the device will take some getting use to. I took it out the box & played around with it for a few minutes but I don't see myself picking it back up anytime soon.

This VR headset does a pretty good job. The only problem is Samsung doesn't have enough content for it. And the content they do have is over priced. You pay $100 for the device and they expect you to pay $15 for one app.

Truly only have one real issue with this device... I have to remove my phone from the case in order to use. With an ottor box case, i really dont bother to remove the phone often. My other issue would be headaches as the screen becomes blurry often after a few minutes or so of use. Some video content is not hd which makes the headaches worse. Otherwise just ok cool. Wouldnt buy by itself..mine came in a bundle

We purchased the Gear Vr for a Christmas gift. It appeared to be a cool gift until it started overheating in about 5 minutes. Every time it is used it overheats and shuts down. This appears to be a significant defect with this product and there is no resolution to the problem. Don't waste your money.

The glasses weigh a lot. They have me a headache while wearing them. The unit requires TONS of programs to be installed on your mobile device which bogs down even an S7 edge. Not to mention the heat generated by the phone while operating the glasses. I returned ours.

This is ok, but not worth the price. Don't even think about purchasing if you wear glasses, it's not compatible. It has a view adjuster dial, but it still is very grainy and has low resolution. A friend of mine has a $30 VR that's compatible with any phone, Android or I-Phone and it's not as blurry. Don't waste your money.
