Great premium media player that I wish I was willing to keep. This product has a great interface and their movie store is awesome. The quality that you get from this is the same if not sometimes better than 4K/Blu-ray discs. But… the price is not at a sweet spot enough for me to keep it. If this was priced around $2500 (for the 1tb of storage it comes with) I would keep it without questioning my purchase. I decided to just go all in on my NAS server. I hate collecting disc (they take up too much room and time ripping) this is why I purchased this device, but I can’t convince myself to keep it at the current price. Maybe if I had a lot of money to just blow… then maybe… Hopefully they’re able to make the price more convincing in the future.

    Great device. Dated software UI/UX.

Couldn’t be easier to set up. The Strato V comes well-packaged — even covered by a logo’d fabric bag, which gives it a nice, high-end unboxing touch. Kaleidescape even includes all of the cables you’ll need to connect the Strato V to your system — including a THX-certified HDMI cable! The most complicated setup step is getting a Kaleidescape account and activating your Strato V, but even that was dead-simple! The most disappointing part of the Strato V experience is that the software and UI/UX feels dated and in need of some love. The well-known Kaleidescape wall of box art looks great — even though you only see it when you browse the Kaleidescape store. The screens that especially look dated and like an afterthought are the controls you see when you go to start a title or while a title is playing. It honestly looks like something from Windows95! I’m also underwhelmed by the mobile app-based remote control options. The mobile app-based controls for AppleTV are significantly better and more elegantly designed than the mobile app-based remote from Kaleidescape — I really miss the AppleTV buttons to jump 10 seconds forward or backward in the playing content. The closest similar option in Kaleidescape is to go back to the start of the current “chapter” which is often a jump back of 5-10 minutes rather than a quick 10 seconds. On a positive note, the Kaleidescape team seems very open to feature requests and feedback, and I’ve already shared all of these observations with them to hopefully fix/improve in future software updates. But all of these complaints are pretty minor. In general, I’m thrilled with the big step up in movie viewing experience of the Strato V over the AppleTV 4K. In particular, the lossless, uncompressed audio from the Strato V makes all other streaming options — AppleTV 4K, Netflix, Roku, etc — seem pretty awful by comparison. I especially notice much more bass and LFE audio details that must be dropped out entirely on streamers that use compressed audio. One other note — if you don’t have a 1Gbps download speed home network, you’ll probably be pretty frustrated with the Strato V experience because it may take you up to an hour or even more to download any titles. My network is 1Gbps and it takes ~10-15 minutes to download any title, which is quick enough for me to go get some snacks and have the title downloaded when I get back. That reminds me of one final gripe — the Strato V ships with a 1Gbps network card, so, even if you were willing to pay for a faster home network, it will be capped at 1Gbps. At this price point and in this day and age, the Strato V should have a 10Gbps netork card (or support later upgrading to that speed by the owner). I’m fairly certain that both the Strato V’s 1Tb drive size and the 1Gbps network speed limit are deliberate decisions to make the Strato V user experience frustrating enough to encourage upgrading to a Terra Prime server, which has more space and a faster 2.5 Gbps network speed.
