Broad support for many devices, but not deep
Posted by: dourip from: on
I purchased because of the broad support for many devices and formats, but I had to return it because it didn't fully support all the options for my Schlage Connect locks (specifcally custom user codes).
Make sure you check the vendor's website for device compatibility before you buy.

Glad I bought it - technology still a bit immature
Posted by: Rusty from: on
I have worked with a number of home automation devices and I find this hub to be as promised relative to supporting a wide range of devices. So I have no regrets in that regard. I have had issues with this hub from the standpoint of working consistently when accessing from my smartphone across my WiFi LAN as compared to accessing from my cellular data network (i.e. WiFi turned off). I have generally received various networking errors when configuring new devices utilizing WiFi from my phone/app and the app seems to work more consistently when I turn WiFi off on my phone and access via cellular data. Not sure why this is but I notice Samsung just issued a new firmware update as of two days ago (4/21/2016) so perhaps this will help. Overall, I find the home automation technology to still be a bit immature in that some devices work better than others and I've run into a fair number of hardware reliability issues at the device level - not related to this hub. But sometimes I find the issues could easily be falsely attributed to the hub by the device manufacturers so be wary when a device maker suggests the issue is with your hub - I have generally found that to not be true - most of my issues have been on the device side of the equation. I don't expect telephone support from any large organizations (like Samsung) but I have emailed Samsung support (firstname.lastname@example.org) and found their support to be responsive and helpful. I have had issues with the Smartthings software/app not being fully mature - for example, the dashboard alerts couldn't be removed/cleaned up so Samsung support had to do that for me from their backend - but they did that readily with an email request. The whole home automation market is still a bit immature as the technology is just past that "early adopter" stage with regard to reliability and consistency. But it does work largely as advertised and I have enjoyed working and experimenting with various devices. In my case, I have both Zigbee and Z-wave devices deployed and have pretty good luck with both using this hub.

Great at 1st
Posted by: drholt from: on
Great at 1st, the longer I've had it the more annoying it has been. I started adding multiple items, but some just won't pair, some will pair but I can't control, and others will pair and I can control, but eventually stop working. My daughter loves the electronic door lock and it is pair but we have never been able to control it. For the camera's and thermosat, we use the associated device apps, since they would never pair. The 13 associated cree lights work most of the time, but eventually get stuck in a loop and either stay on or stay off regarless of what the program calls for. At any giving time, I will have 1-4 lights that won't follow program. I delete them and add them back and they will work for awhile untill some other light stops working. Once all the bulbs die, they will not be replaced and the hub will find it's proper home in the garbage. I believe most reviews were by folks who recently purchased the hub. I would have given a good review as well and did initially recommend to friends, but since them I have grown tried by the constant glitches. Be prepared to have to immerse yourself in the smartthings community searching for solutions that never truely get fixed.

I installed the SmartThings hub
Posted by: Kenny from: on
I installed the SmartThings hub to control a Schlage FE599NX Z-Wave lock. Installation was easy, after I selected the model number of the lock from my mobile ap. I've since added a light dimmer to my home theater. I chose the SmartThings hub because it did not require a monthly fee to use, like several other hubs do.

Used to have home automation through my security provider, but discontinued due to cost and constant issues with reliability. All the home automation equipment I had was zwave, so I started looking at various controllers available that could use them. After a lot of research I decided to purchase the Smarthub, and man am I happy. The equipment learned in easily and it all works flawlessly. The Smarthub also got rid of the long delays between sending a command and having the device react. With the Smarthub commands take effect immediately. Currently I have 5 lights and 2 thermostats on the Smarthub and will be adding more soon. Great product!

Tried it, but not for me...
Posted by: azkevman from: on
I am just getting into Home Automation and decided to try out both the SmartThings hub as well as the Wink hub. I personally found the Wink hub and app to be more user friendly, and more of the devices I already owned can connect to WInk and not to SmartThings (i.e. Chamberlain MyQ and Emerson Sensi thermostat.). After a few days trying both systems independently, I chose to stay with Wink, and returned the SmartThings hub. While SmartThings seemed to work well with other SmartThing devices and sensors, it felt like alot of things required finding community developed code that may or may not work the way I wanted.

Software isn't really clear nor easy to use. Seems like a collection of fragmented technologies thrown together.

Easy to install home sensor system
Posted by: Casey from: on
I purchased the hub and several water sensors because we had a water line break recently and never want to go through that kind of damage again. The system is easy to install and seems to work fine. The instructions on how to interface it with your smart phone, in my case an iphone, leave a lot to be desired, however. I had to call Samsung customer service to get some basic information and they struggled to answer some of the questions.

Hope improvements come soon
Posted by: Dude from: on
I had high hopes this z-wave hub would work as well advertised. I have had trouble getting 3 light switches to work on "dust to dawn" settings and 1 on a "on/off time schedule". Tech support told me there have been problems with platform stability and they were working on it, they also emailed me instructions on the fix and on 2 occasions "pushed a fix" from their end, but to no avail. In all fairness these problems may be inherent with Z-wave hubs I just don't know. If they get these problems fixed and make the app a little more intuitive it would be wonderful.

Smart Things Hub
Posted by: Brian from: on
I initially bought this product for full price only to notice it on sale a few days later. Customer service refunded me the difference. Product is easy to use. The hub is a great way to interface with all home automation products on the market and not just Samsung peripherals. This product has met my expectations and more.
