5Ghz band speed and range is exceptional. 2.4Ghz band is terrible. If you don’t need a good 2.4ghz band then this is great. 1 foot from router I get 100+ mbps and 10 feet away unobstructed getting barely 8 mbps on 2.4. Most smart home devices require a good 2.4ghz connection, but this router can not provide that. Will be returning as I am in the return period still.

Legacy devices may not work properly with WIFI-6, please check updates for these devices. You can try connecting these devices manually to 2.4GHz. After a Year of using a First gen wifi 6 TP Link router, I decided it was time for an upgrade. Enter this Asus router. I won’t lie. Aside from its wifi 6 capability and its slick alien/gamer design. There isn’t much outside of the ordinary. The setup was easy and the experience was great. Then about 2 weeks ago I got a firmware update that ruined my experience. I ended up having my devices constantly disconnected from my network and the have the connection established immediately. Initially I thought it too be an overwhelming amount of devices on the network, when in reality I barely had 1/3rd of it max capacity. After dealing with the constant connection and disconnection my devices, and with little support from Asus, I made the choice to return the unit. Much better options for the same price roughly.

~2 months ownership. It replaced my fiber isp's leased calix router; my service is only 50down/50up as it is all I need. Good-no dropped connections, light adjustability, does a fine job for basic internet stuff, decent with gaming (wired), speedtest. Cons- range is TERRIBLE 5K sq foot home with this in center and doesn't cover even half the house, videos over 720 resolution pixelate and buffer (on a hard wired connection), WILD speed fluctuations, and broadcasting from a phone or computer to tv-forget about it. The isp's calix router was LEAPS and BOUNDS better than this one-it ran FLAWLESS for a year. I would (and am) look for something else. (and i'm not spending hours on phone tech support to "fix" something that should work out of the box). My second and last asus product.

Dear Shooter7,
Thank you for your comment.
We do understand your disappointment with the product and the inconvenience this may have caused if you are experiencing weak signal strength. Typically, the coverage of this ZenWIFI is up to 5700 sq. ft. To resolve the weak signal, place the router in the center of the area you want to cover, avoid placing the router near metal objects, electronic devices or direct sunlight, position the router on a flat, hard surface and halfway between the floor and ceiling. Additionally, dense building materials, such as gypsum, concrete walls and planks can affect Wi-Fi signal penetration. Also, we recommend updating the router's firmware if it is running with an older version. Firmware is available for download at: https://www.asus.com/us/networking-iot-servers/wifi-routers/asus-gaming-routers/rt-ax82u/helpdesk_bios?model2Name=RT-AX82U. Should you need further assistance with the product, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and I would be more than happy to help. Worked great for about a year and a half, then the random packet loss started causing stutters. Updated firmware, rebooted, trouble shot ONT, and reset router but nothing has solved it. Great speeds and coverage area but may have to replace it due to connection up’s before 2 years. It’s not repeatable enough to prove an issue on a warranty claim.

Dear Shimz,
We certainly understand the inconvenience this may have caused.
All ASUS products undergo intensive quality control testing and inspections and are built to last. If packet loss is a random issue, please check if the PC or device accessing the router is getting an excellent signal and internet service is working properly when the problem occurs since this may cause packet loss if internet connection is unstable. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and I would be more than happy to help. Or, you are most welcome to call Product Support Hotline at: 1(888) 678-3688. Worked great until it didn’t. Had it for just under two years. Was solid. Worked perfect. Then it up and died out of the blue. Burnt out, no power to it at all. There was no reason for this. No electrical fluctuations, no thunder storm, just randomly died.

These manufacturers sell expensive routers with zero customer service support. I called customer care for help, provided the serial number, and confirmed the warranty. When I requested assistance, the representative said they needed to restart the system first before proceeding. After waiting on hold for a while, the call got disconnected with no follow-up. Instead of dealing with these overpriced routers, I’m considering switching to my internet provider’s router for peace of mind.

I purchased this router in August from my local Best Buy after my last router was zapped during a bad storm. After discussing what i was looking for with a sales associate, she was head over heels crazy about this router. Well, either i just got a bad one or they're just junk! When it works, it works fine, but AT LEAST 5 times a day I have ro reset it. I don't do any gaming at all, just stream TV on 2 TV's and have some cameras around the house. The TV's constantly freeze and the cameras always go out. I've had some cheap routers that didnt have these issue. Completely disappointed with this router!

I have two of these and use them as a mesh system. Asus' router software is a little lacking though. The device constantly will purge / forget the assigned names for devices. Also, it only has 3 cpu cores, and 512mb of ram on board. If you login to the interface and see the ram and cpu are highly utilized, good luck trying to update a setting. Also, the DNS featur on this is horrible. Once you set it up, and if you ever need to go back into the interface using the IP address, it will kick over to the "named address" for your router and time out. When it works, it works fine.

Install was easy through the app. However, i bought this product to replace the router my internet provider gave me and it ended up performing worse. TVs that never buffered started to buffer and lag, started to notice streaming was not as clear, signal did not go as far. I returned this product and will be searching for another router that can perform better

I feel like a lot of these routers are just hype these days. I just went back to using what the ISP provided after not noticing much of a difference in terms of speed/ping/lan. Lights are cool and the port setting would be helpful if you're trying to host a server.

My router died and replaced it temporarily with a $70 TP-Link which has dropout issues. I have over time used all the major brands of routers except for Asus, so after reading all the great reviews, I was excited to give this router a try. Upon setup, my two desktops, my laptop, phone and I-pad all connected. Then the fun began. None of my echo products would connect. Found a workaround on the net of putting them on a guest network. It worked, but a dumb solution. My two TVs would not connect to either network nor would my VOIP phone. At this point, I am having way too much fun. Boxing this sucker back up to return. By the way, I compared the range and speed of this unit with my cheap TP-Link, the speed was marginally better, but the TP-Link has better range.

I've had this router for one week now and the radios will randomly stop working. Sometimes the 2.4 radio will stop working/broadcasting, which most of my things are connected. The 5.8 will just stop working or cut out while playing a game online. I've tried using the default (out the box) settings and also tweaking the settings. Nothing seems to work. When it does work, the range is very good, I had a Google Wifi mesh (3 node) set up in a 3k sqft + garage (100 ft away) and this router seems to have the same amout of range as the G Wifi.

Performance good so far. Set up from the ASUS site is pretty average. Options for the unit’s performance and settings choices thorough and useful. Support and troubleshooting from ASUS.com might have been developed by the writers for Laurel and Hardy’s “Who’s on first, what’s on second, I don’t know is on third.” Inconsistent formatting for information fields, endless looping in the chat section, dead ends that do not complete the inquiry’s journey, repeating screens requesting information they don’t need. Time to again watch Bill Murray again on Groundhog Day, again. Thus two stars, again. In store help was great.

This router makes my modem connection drop from time to time and I am unable to reach my max speed when I hook it up to my router ( I am on xfinity gigabit speed). I used the Lan ports multiple time and it is frustrating to see that a wire connection only reaches 250mb instead of my gigabit speed. It's Lan speed is exactly the speed of my wifi. So what's the point of being wired at that point then. The wifi is awesome though, it really works well and the signal strength from upstairs to the basement I can reach the max speed of wifi still.
