The Canon 50mm lens is a fantastic option for photographers looking for a versatile and affordable lens. It's particularly well-regarded for its sharpness and the beautiful bokeh effect it produces, making it an excellent choice for portrait photography. The lens creates stunning images with a nice depth of field, allowing the subject to stand out against a softly blurred background. However, it's important to note that when used on a crop sensor camera, the effective focal length becomes approximately 80mm due to the crop factor. This means that while the lens is great for portraits, it may feel a bit zoomed in, which can limit your framing options in tighter spaces. Overall, the Canon 50mm is a solid lens that delivers excellent image quality and is a great addition to any photographer's kit, especially for those focusing on portrait work.

I decided to buy the 50mm 1.8 vs the 50mm 1.4 based on the various reviews I read online. The one glaring review or comment that convince me to buy this lens is images taken with the 1.8 are no less sharper than images taken with the more expensive 1.4. The focus motor is a very audible, but does not affect my photography which is mostly portrait. I do not shoot videos with my Canon DSLR. Granted that this lens may not be the best prime 50mm, but it works for me. It is lightweight which I need since I have osteoarthritis in my right hand. I shoot with a Canon 85mm 1.8 and use the 50mm for shots where I need to move in closer for some shots I want.

Mixed feelings about a fixed lens so far. The quality of the photos is amazing, no question there. I suppose the hardest thing to get used to is finding the right distance from your subject to capture your vision. I'm a lover of zoom lenses, so no matter my distance I can zoom in or out a little and get the perfect shot, here I'm taking steps, playing around with my angles. In conclusion.. great quality photos, easy to use, hard to get used to shooting with it. P.S. Photos have not been edited.

It is a light, clear, bright, fast and accurate focusing lens, even in dark shots on my DSLRs (EOS5D Mark II) But for video users without an external microphone it is nosy. I use it for both, studio shots and outdoors, Photo and video. Manual focus ring could be better to grab with one finger, (the outher lens ring is on the same level as the focusing ring so it doesn't allow your finger to get a good grip with it) the MF-AF button is very slippery too it does not move easily with one finger. This button and the MF ring are flush with the surface of the lens. Maybe some people prefer them this way to avoid moving them by mistake, but for me they are there to be used! Bear in mind the manual focus does not work with the camera off. I shoot with my eyes on the wiewfinder all the time, not with live view or looking at the screen. I am a Professional Photographer with more than 25 years of experience. I have a Nikon equivalent and it is easier to use, but it is 20 years old, So It is only works completely manual on my Canons with an adapter. Want more tech info and comparisons? I purchased this prime lens because I wanted something that would perform a bit better than the kit lens in darker conditions; think indoor parties, clubs, concerts, and night street photography with no flash (I HATE FLASH). I am quite pleased with the lens. Definitely better than the kit lens for the situations mentioned. There are two drawbacks that keep me from giving a five star review. First, I feel like the auto focus is quite slow in the dark (which is not all that surprising). Second, the field of view is really more limiting than I thought. Still and all, this will be a valued addition to my camera bag that I would heartily recommend.

First ever lens purchased. Very affordable. Got it for $99 and can’t expect more. Very nice and sharp images only thing is it has a crop of 1.6 x which will make you move around to get the perfect shot.

works well in a variety of light conditions. Auto focus struggles under dimmer light conditions. Manual focus compensates well at that point. It gives very nice results when shooting portraits, and action shots. I am able to capture good images in continuous shooting mode.

i purchased this lens after reading several reviews online and it does not disappoint. this lens hasn't left my 6D since i got it. the reason why i'm leaving off a star is because the focus ring has slowly became stiff. it feels like there's debris under it preventing it from twisting smoothly. the autofocus is nice and buttery smooth though. the lens is also very light due to the plastic build, you'll forget it's there most of the time.

I bought this lens to shoot sports and indoors without flash as an alternative to my heavy telephoto lenses. I can shoot all the way across a hockey rink or basketball court and then crop the pic for a perfect news photo. It is, though a little difficult to use at intimate events, like a store opening or charity wine-tasting because it can't be adjusted for close ups. Still I LOVE this lens and the price could not be beat. It is my go-to for sports coverage when I don't want to lug around a 3-pound telescopic model.

Perfect for beginners who are getting into portrait photography. You can even use it for animals too just got to be sneaky.

Though the AF is a little slow, it does the work perfectly for a prime lens. Nice shutter which captures more light than the usual 18-55. Perfect for home use and well lit photography.

This is my first lens purchase apart from the lens kit I had gotten with my DSLR. I'd say overall, it's a big change from the kit ones. I especially enjoyed being able to shoot with larger aperture. And that blurry background looks nice, even with my crop sensor camera. The only thing I noticed (which is probably not that important to all) is how slow it focuses. I mean not turtle slow, but you can tell. And it's definitely not silent. I should have gotten the USM one but it's much more expensive. Overall, it's something that I would recommend if you're in a budget. Note: I am not a professional by any means. and this is just a beginner's point of view.

Works well so far, really loving how the photos are turning out. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is the price that's all

I bought this lens to use as an indoor/small general lens. The kit lens is massive, and it is nice to make the camera smaller when not needing the 24-105 wide angle or zoom. The lens itself functions well. It focuses slower than the kit, but no real issue with that. Nice and light and crisp photos. Can't go wrong at this price.

I purchased this lens for it's wide aperture so that I could achieve a shallow depth of field with my camera. I found it to be a great price but you also get what you pay for. This lens does not include image stabilization and does not take the sharpest photos, however, it does exactly what I expected it to. I find that this lens performs best when the aperture is not fully open and the shutter speed is set to aminimum of 1/100th of asecond. The focusing motor is quite noisy but for $125 it does its job. If you're still using a kit lens that was included with the camera you should definitely give this lens a try!

Everyone should own a nifty fifty! I love using this Len and use it a lot when doing portraits. The “boca” is really good with this lens. The price just adds to how amazing this lens is! Buy one….you won’t regret it!

I wanted a larger aperture for a better bokeh for portraits, - 1 star because of auto focusing on subjects. Even with the aperture wide open, still needs plenty of light for the result I desired. Ended up using manual (of course) and results were acceptable. I've used this on a cropped sensor and full-frame, and it works best on a full-frame. Still a decent lens to have in the bag, worth the purchase.
