They can detect temperature and occupancy, helping to manage hot and cold spots and adjust the temperature in the rooms that matter most. You can control and monitor these sensors through the ecobee app, including enabling or disabling them as needed. However, for more advanced features—like receiving notifications when doors are opened or monitoring activity when you're not home—you would need a subscription to the ecobee Smart Security plan. Without the subscription, you'll still benefit from temperature control and occupancy detection, but security-related features such as motion alerts and activity notifications are part of the paid plan.

Getting instant alerts when doors and windows are opened does require a Smart Security subscription, but you get a 2-month free trial to test it out. Chime when open is a free feature.
