The MartinLogan Variable Aperture System (VAS) solves this by delivering high-output, full-range performance through a variety of aperture options that elegantly blend in with recessed lighting. With both full-range speaker and dedicated subwoofer options, the VAS is a highly configurable system able to achieve 38 different looks, including the ability to disguise the subwoofer as a stealthy air vent.
Small in-ceiling speakers have traditionally forced a choice between aesthetics and performance. The Variable Aperture System eliminates that compromise with a concealed, high-volume enclosure hidden above the ceiling. The result is the bass, dynamics, and authority of a much larger speaker delivered through an aperture that blends seamlessly with designer LED downlights—creating spaces that look beautiful and sound extraordinary.
The full-range solution for minimalist spaces, delivering clear, dynamic sound from a discreet opening. A specialized 2" aluminum driver reproduces midrange and high frequencies with remarkable vocal realism and ultra-wide dispersion for broad coverage. Dual force-canceling 5.5" woofers provide deep, low-distortion bass while minimizing structural vibration, directing more acoustic energy into the room and lowering the noise floor for greater performance.
MartinLogan offers 38 curated aesthetic configurations built around your chosen aperture size. VAS Speakers include round and square trims in Seamless (mud-in), Minimal, and Wide styles, plus flush or extended-mount grille options. Choose a 3", 3.5", or 4" grille for 12 unique looks per size. VAS Subwoofers add two vent-style trims, allowing them to match VAS Speakers or blend seamlessly into the ceiling as a discreet air vent.
Both Variable Aperture models feature an innovative Adjustable Port Offset design that maximizes installation flexibility. The aperture can be positioned left, right, or center within the housing to accommodate visual and structural requirements. Combined with adjustable mounting brackets, this allows precise alignment for a clean, seamless installation and a perfectly finished appearance.
In combination with the Adjustable Port Offset feature, the bracket system provides unmatched flexibility within the ceiling joist bay. With support for floor joist spacing from 12" to 24" on center, Variable Aperture System models work in a wide variety of builds and designs.
Custom DSP presets developed for the MartinLogan MP500 V2 and MDA8/MDA16 amplifiers maximize sound quality, output, and system efficiency. With presets engaged, each amplifier channel can safely drive up to two VAS Speakers, while the MP500 V2 can power dual subwoofers—supporting up to four VAS Subwoofers from just 1U of rack space. An 8-ohm impedance ensures compatibility with many high-performance third-party amplifiers.
