Miss the RANGE of Detection of the older unit

Unfortunately, the range of this newer unit does not match the range of detecting motion of my old RING Doorbell, can no longer pick up people walking on the sidewalk or cars in the street. However, the new unit does provide much more clarity, a great wide angle....no body will hide in the corner near my front door! Night vision is great! I bought a new faceplate to match our trim, looks great!

    Top Notch Video Doorbell

This 3rd Gen Wired Ring Doorbell Pro replaced an existing Ecobee doorbell. The Ring doorbell is leaps and bounds better than the Ecobee. The field of view is outstanding, and it quickly detects people and packages at my front door. The clarity of the video is excellent. The nighttime video is in black and white, but it is also excellent, and you can see about 10 to 15 feet even in complete darkness. There is only about a 1 to 2 second delay between motion at the doorbell and notifications on my iPhone. It was 10 to 15 seconds on my previous Ecobee doorbell. Installation of the doorbell and setup in the Ring app was easy. The doorbell did not work with my existing mechanical chime, but it came with a small chime that fit into my chime box and wired into the wiring terminals of my chime. The chime is loud enough and did an adequate job of replacing my mechanical chime. The Ring doorbell comes with a free 30-day trial of the Home Premium Plan. The Premium Plan is fairly expensive, and I plan to subscribe to the Basic Plan, once my free trial is up. I wish it was cheaper, but I did enjoy the 24/7 video recording and the generative AI text descriptions of motion events (e.g., “A brown Amazon box is placed on the porch.”). The AI text descriptions of motion events were surprisingly accurate. I just wish this feature was included in the lower cost plans. Overall, this is the best video doorbell that I have ever owned. It has excellent video quality, smart motion detection, and responsive performance. Highly recommended.

    3rd Gen's a Charm

I feel like Ring read all of the feedback from the review of my last Ring Doorbell (Wired) and put it into this Wired Doorbell Pro 3rd Gen 4K, because they checked nearly every box and issue I still had while also improving on nearly everything that makes Ring so popular. Let's start with what I love about this new edition. My last Ring doorbell was the Battery Doorbell Pro. The features were great over my first Ring Video Doorbell Pro, my only major complaint was how big, bulky and frankly, ugly it was. The Wired Doorbell Pro along with all of this year's 4K designs really give Ring devices a much needed facelift and the results are AWESOME. Not only is this 3rd Gen nice and thin and curved, while still maintaining the distinctive Ring look, but the actual mounting plate is now thin enough to fit perfectly on the door trim on my front door. Even the 1st Gen Pro which was thin, used to overhang slightly. The new shape is amazing and the color looks premium as well. Not only does it look great, the new 4K retinal camera is also a huge and surprising upgrade over the already very good 2K which gave more vertical view so that I could see packages. Not only can I see packages still, but I have a wider FOV with less fishbowling and zero circular vignetting and I can see my entire porch. All at an increased 4K resolution! Outstanding upgrade and worth the upgrade with the face lift. Also in the live view, there is an indicator for bandwidth usage and connection quality, you'll see green = good, red = weak, initially when data is streamed and catching up I can see 10-15Mbps and then it drops down to 2Mbps or so in live view. You still get the same great features of Ring like live pre-roll, which means the recording will capture the previous seconds before an event was detected so you don't catch only the back-end of an event. You also get access to the cloud and a new feature is you can choose to get a Call from Ring when an event is detected, which is a neat feature that allows you to answer and speak to a person at your door as if it was a phone call. Very cool feature. Some may ask why Ring, why pay a subscription? I'm on the Ring Standard Plan and have been for years and the main reason is for convenience and sharing with my wife. Also, while I'm a technical person with all the requisite equipment to do all of this myself to a private NAS and a private weblink to access away from home, I frankly don't want to deal with it all the time and for other people too. Ring just makes it easy. Share the app, share camera permissions, and they can set how they view the content on their phone. I also have the Ring Pro which allows me to record more locally to an SD card if I choose. Also, Ring gives a 10% discount and Extended Warranty, and I can connect as many Ring devices to my Plan without having to spend more per device. I've actually used the Warranty before and they gave me credit and half off a new device. Also, the hardware tends to be better quality in terms of both the device and the quality of footage and software interface than some of the free options. Again, your experience may vary but for us it all just works and we also integrate into Alexa throughout our house. For $100/yr its a small expense to be able to watch and monitor around my house, watch my kids in the back yard when I'm working. A few things to note, I didn't take stars off but you should be aware of these potential issues. You will need a transformer that provides enough power. I'm still using the same 18v/30A transformer I installed with my original Ring Video Doorbell Pro and it works perfectly with this 3rd Gen and the Ring app says it is Level 1 Power Output and transformer is strong and well equipped to power new features (Check screenshot). This 3rd gen will not activate your existing mechanical chime. It likely does not provide enough power, unlike previous units which could activate the indoor chime. Ring provides a Mini Chime that you can connect to your physical Chime which is basically just a little speaker. I just kept the original chime pro unit in place, which does nothing now, but I still get a chime/notification to all of my Alexa/Echo devices so this isn't a problem for me. The security screw/mechanism isn't as good as previous devices where you had a torx screw on the bottom that prevented easy tampering. With the 3rd gen they provide a little plastic tool to pop off the cover, which then accesses a simple phillips head screw that holds the doorbell to your mount plate. You can easily use a screwdriver to pop off the cover and with a phillips head someone could make off with your doorbell. This is apparently the same unit that is compatible with PoE as it has a USB-C connector in the back that can connect to a PoE adapter for power. It sounds like networking still uses WiFi however, but I am not 100% sure on this. I had no issues with signal strength and response is fast using just the Ring Pro as my Access Point with WiFi6. I keep all of my Ring devices on the Ring Pro to limit network collisions and to also save additional footage locally. The face of the unit is still plastic, which is likely to wear or possibly break over time. There also isn't multiple face plates like the 1st Gen Pro unit I bought. I can understand not having as much in the box, but I would've liked to have seen a more premium material being used. That said, I'm very very happy with this new Ring Doorbell update. It is awesome to look at and the new 4K display and wider FOV without fisheye makes it easy to see both visitors and packages in crystal clear high resolution. It really is like having another camera in front with the excellent motion detection.

  • Do u have to have internet to have a door camera?

Hi, Grip - Yes, the Ring Wired Doorbell Pro (3rd Gen) requires an internet connection to function properly. While it doesn't rely on Wi-Fi for power, it does need a stable internet connection to stream live video, send alerts, and allow two-way communication through the Ring app. Without an internet connection, the doorbell would function like a traditional wired doorbell — it would ring when pressed, but you wouldn't be able to access video feeds or receive notifications. For optimal performance, Ring recommends a minimum upload speed of 15 Mbps, especially for 4K devices. This ensures smooth video streaming and reliable alerts
