I knew this new system would need more bass to check all of the boxes. Our family room is a large space with two story ceiling height and filling it with sound is a challenge. This system is meant to serve 2.2 stereo and 5.2.4 home theater. I have paired two SB17 Ultra R|Evolution subs with my KEF META speakers: R7 towers, R6 center, Q3 rear, Q8 ATMOS. I was able to audition several options including KEF, REL, SVS, B&W, and Martin Logan. During these evaluations it became clear that to work in my space sealed subs would be the right choice, ported subs could put out enough volume in a smaller package but I could not place them appropriately in my space, my only viable placement for these was inside of the main towers. All of this narrowed the field to SVS R|Evolution line up or the REL S series. In order to get the Chest compressing, push you back into the couch volume I was trying to achieve it was going to take a stacked line array or very large drivers. This is where the SB17s started to pull ahead of the other options. Stacking two SVS SB13s per side was a option but the SB17s still out performed them. The two REL options left were a line array of S850s or two S 212 Black Label both of these options were 3-4 times more expensive than the SVS SB17 Ultra R|Evolution pair. My only concern in choosing these was if the giant drivers would be able to keep up with the fast and precise KEF R7 META towers. The massive 2800 watt amps in these are able to keep up even at reference level, flex the windows volume. There is no muddiness or struggles with these subs when listening to tracks like Dire Straits Money for nothing or Rush Tom Sawyer, when those Neil Peart blindingly fast drum strikes start to rip the SB17s are hanging with the KEF towers for every beat. I should add that the brains of this system is a Marantz AV30 pre amp and it is capable of magic. The only downside so far is these guys are HEAVY, see in progress pic attached, a labor of love.

This subwoofer is truly incredible. It has a 55lb. magnet, and a 2800 watt RMS amplifier that can reach peaks of 6000 watts. It ships weighing in at 189lbs., in a box the size of a coffee table. It is very well protected in its shipping container and is much smaller once you remove it from the box. This subwoofer has the ability to produce subsonic frequencies that at times you feel them rather than hear them because feel they are below audible hearing. Besides an audiophile quality subwoofer, they are also a work of art.

Assuming you need a robust subwoofer: Buy it here at BestBuy or direct from SVS, (with 45 day free return policy), and I guarantee you will become an SVS fan. There is nothing to be gained by buying a JL Audio Fathom sub….lost yes…lots of money. This sub has extension to below audible levels. The app has all the adjustability you’ll need. Finally, my setup is in a huge open concept multi purpose room and my wife Still says “too much bass dear”. Highly recommended.

Lasted a week, made a knocking sound, turned it off then on and it made a winning sound. Doesn’t work.

I have 5 other SVS subwoofers and these are the best of the bunch. This sub is light years ahead of the sb16. The sb16 is great but this is just that much better.
