Synopsis

Gamer
Reality and video games merge in this high-concept sci-fi action thriller from Crank creators Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor. In the not too distant future, mind-control technology allows humans to control the actions and movements of other humans, allowing reclusive billionaire Ken Castle (Michael C. Hall) to create the ultimate video game. It's called "Slayers," and it's a mass-scale, multiplayer online first-person shooter that's as controversial as it is popular. In the world of gamers, Simon (Logan Lerman) is a rock star; miraculously managing to keep his character alive week after week, he racks up frags like Billy Mitchell jumps barrels. But unlike Mitchell's Mario, Simon's video-game avatar is a living, breathing human being named Kable (Gerard Butler). Defying the odds to keep Kable running and gunning though even the most explosive battles, Simon captures the imagination of a global audience. Torn from his family, thrown into prison, and forced to fight against his will, Kable realizes that his only hope of ever seeing his family again is to somehow escape the game, reclaim his identity, and expose Castle's dehumanizing technology on live television. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Great action movie with great surround sound

This is a movie that I thought was the best movie on DVD or Blu Ray I have watched in 2010 witch only consist of January so far. If you like action this is the movie for you. The plot is also a bit unique centered around convicts giving up control of their motor functions so that other people can play in games with their bodies while the convict is aware of his or her environment. The Blu Ray version of this movie is complementary also providing the high def sound format DTS HD Master Audio. If you have a good home theater set up and are able to play the high def sound tracks that come on blu ray movie disc, you will be able to enjoy the other aspect of all movies a lot of people miss out on which is the sound. The surround sound in this movie is so good it makes you feel as though you are in it. It was simply awesome. In my opinion, the sound is just as important as the video. I believe that you should not only focus on buying the best tv set possible but also focus on being able to take advantage of the surround sound sound tracks that come on most movie media. As with this movie if you don't have this capability, you are missing out on an even better movie experience. The sound can often turn a bad movie without it into a good movie when listening to it in surround sound. I would recommend this movie to anybody for its action, plot, and surround sound.

    Poor 3D Quality

I have seven pairs of 3D glasses. Tried all seven pairs to watch this movie -and yes, all seven were charged. Unfortunately, the 3D effects just did not seem to function. In addition, the picture was blurry. Ended up watching it in 2D. At least the picture was clear this way. As for the movie itself: interesting idea. Lots of recognizable actors (which surprised me). Neat camera angles which probably would have translated well to 3D if it had worked! There was one particular scene that was a bit strange. You'll know what I mean if you watch. All in all, the film is worth watching. But, if you purchase the 3D Blu-Ray, you are rolling the dice.

Decent 3D conversion can't make a blah movie good

Aside from a nausea or headache-inducing opening sequence in 3D (native 3D movies are never shot with ultra-fast camera cuts), this post-release conversion to 3D was decent. Definitely not native, but not the worst conversion either. But the issue is that the movie itself is not great, even for those who enjoy video games. And for some people, be forewarned that there are scenes intended to be disturbing. Not a movie with high replay value. The 3D did make the story slightly more engaging than my initial 2D viewing, but not a "world" I'd prefer to experience for long. Movie tries hard to make a point, but in the end a bland action movie with a bad aftertaste.

    Game Over

When I saw the trailer to this movie it looked a lot better than the movie itself.Gerard Butler(300) does an ok job playing a convict named Kable who escapes the real life and death game to find his wife and daughter, and kill the villain. The action in this movie is pretty good, with the environments looking like one giant battlefield, but the acting from other actors was just too plain.Michael C.Hall(TV's "Dexter") is the creator of the game,he plays as the villain Ken Castle. He was not at all enjoyable even for a villain,he just looks like one of those guys who they just said to,you wanna play a bad guy in this movie? This movie reminds me of "Crank" with the weird camera angles,oh that's right the directors of that movie made this movie.I would say rent before you buy.

The only conversion I've seen to 3D was Iron Man 3 and for how much time and money that was said to have been spent on that I thought it was sorely lacking. This conversion, on the other hand, was extremely well done. So well done in fact, that I'm quite certain I wouldn't have known it was a conversion if I didn't know that the movie wasn't filmed in 3D. The movie itself is great for gamers, hence the title. A lot of subtle references to things that gamers are familiar with. On the other hand, it is very gritty and violent and everyone should know that going in. Not exactly a light hearted movie, but good entertainment nonetheless.

what a waste of a good plot

With this kind of a plot, they could have made this a really great action movie. Instead you get a movie that focuses more on nudity, rather than good solid action. The director really missed a good opportunity to have unforgettable action scenes. I would put this movie in the trash right next to crank 2. I would trade all the nudity in this movie for one good action scene that would be unforgettable. Gerard Butler needs to chose better movies or his career will be short lived. I loved 300 and this movie does not come close to touching that movie. DO NOT waste 95 minutes of your life on this film.

Terrible movie. The 3D effects are really cool which brings a little bit of new life to this horrible film. The movie was never released in 3D but the directors shot it as one that would get converted to post so it fits well with the cinematics, but that's not enough to fix a broken movie. A bat movie converted into 3D is just a bad 3D movie. I spent less than $10 and I regret every penny I spent.

Gamer is quite an interesting take on the future of society. To use human as literal game avatars, in a life and death match. Is quite a leap in desensitization for our culture. On the other hand it make for an interesting premise. The writing for the movie isn't the best but, the overall concept of the film is good. Action-packed, over the top, not much more though. Recommended for action junkies.
