I tested this a few months ago. My TV picked 71 channels in a vertical position and about 50 when I laid it flat. As you might guess, the ones I was unable to get when the antenna was flat on a table were those that were weaker and/or farther away.

Regarding your question, we highly suggest installing the antenna hung up as high as possible to avoid possible obstacles between the antenna and the transmission tower.
