We recommend using a receiver with either subwoofer or pre-outputs to attach the ASW608.

No but a receiver with a sub out is better.

The only requirement is that the receiver has a subwoofer output. Most will have it, but some of the lower-end receivers won't (like the Sony 2.0 channel receiver, obviously.)
