It's very noisy, especially when filming video. Other than that, it is decent. Wish BestBuy would let me exchange this for a higher-end lens.

Not a very good lens at all. Slow focus, images are subpar. Yes, it’s a kit lens- can’t ask for much.

There is a reason that it is the cheapest prime lens for Sony full frame. It is an extremely slow lens to focus. The motor makes a lot of noise while focusing. Not suited for action but fairly ok for portrait.........if you have patience. Bokeh are acceptable. I returned it due to its extremely slow focusing

Bought this lens for a trip to Punta Cana. Did not want to spend a lot for a lens to take to the beach. that being said this lens performed great. Image quality was great . I used this on the sony A7. yes the focus is a little slower than the more expensive lenses but not enough to warrant not buying it and with the firmware update to 3.1 it was a non issue. others complain about the focus noise but for me it was a not an issue. I also used it for video and the results were stunning. This little gem is great for family photos vacation and the all around snap shots. If you take the time to learn its limitations one can really get great results. nice affordable prime with out breaking the bank.

I have had 50mm lens before when shooting with a different brand DSLR, and never really had much reason to use that focal length. I bought this new 50mm lens from Best Buy, specifically to photograph my new grandson, Of course, if I had a couple of grand to buy the 50mm f1.2, how fun would that be. But at a tenth of the cost, I am so far loving this lens. With its minimum focus distance of 18 inches, it's perfect to move in close and fill the frame. I also like the 85mm f1.8 lens from Sony, but its MFD is nearly 3 feet, Both lenses have their purpose and I do own both and use them both. I was genuinely surprised to find out how sharp the 50mm f1.8 lens really is. In post processing images taken with this lens, I don't need to touch the sharpness slider even the tiniest bit when editing in Photoshop. The color is perfect and I find the bokeh pleasing. At f1.8, the depth of field is razor thin, so I can't imagine how thin it must be when shooting with the f1.2 lens. An aperture of f1.8 is more than enough for my needs. The lens does make a bit of a soft whine when focusing compared to most lenses, but I knew this when I bought it, and I don't find it to be an issue to complain about. It focuses quickly and accurately, and that's really what matters most. Sony does have some firmware upgrades that you should install. It's done with the lens attached to the camera. The firmware can be downloaded from Sony's website. It's currently at version 03 and from what I understand, it has eliminated most of the earlier complaints about this lens. Being mostly plastic, it's probably not a lens than can take a lot of abuse, but I baby my gear and the 50mm should outlast me. Overall, I am very pleased with this lens...more than I thought I would be, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fast standard 50mm prime lens and on a budget. The fact that it is a bargain only make it that much better of a deal.

I bought for a Sony camera that I used on a trip but was not impressed so I returned it and the lens. you may like it, I don't know.

Very sharp, autofocus is hit and miss some, compared to new lenses, so forget sports, but good for portraits/group picture and some candids. Color rendition is excellent but not magical like the old traditional Japanese brands, is like a good iPhone picture with lots of pixels. There is not a nice coating and the glare you get if you take with sun in background is really bad. I recommend this for everything else, I like it but not in love of it. Perfect price to get a new focus length prime.

The 50mm is a great focal length for most photography and videography and is great for beginners to learn on. This lens offers excellent value for the price point and I highly recommend it.

I had to write a review about this lens to debunk some bad reviews about this Sony 50mm 1.8 lens. It is a good nifty fifty with good bokeh for $200. First, the autofocus is not bad at all, even in low light. It's a little slower than my Sony 85mm f1.8. Second, it's fairly sharp in autofocus. If you want very sharp photos, use flexible spot focus. You can also do manual focus, and the MF Assist will magnify your image for very sharp focusing! If you need better for pro work, you'll spend over a grand!

I've purchased this lens on three separate occasions, and would purchase it again and again. For many years, I've always come back to it because for the price, you get exceptional results, when compared to much more expensive lenses. If you're on the fence, and not quite sure if you should buy it.. do so before they're gone! You'll be glad you did!

Hesitant of the negative reviews I had to try the lens before I bought it. I could hear the lens move from across the room and def. noticed how slow it focused. It being so cheap and having no prime lens I figured I'd give it a shot since that was mainly the reason for the negative reviews. After doing a small photo shoot of some senior pictures I loved the quality but the insanely slow focus made the day go by long and frustrating to work with. Leaving me with my doubts I was ready to return the lens and wait til I had more money. THEN I updated my camera to version 3.10 and all the negatives are gone for me. The continuous focus actually works, while before it was nearly non existent. Every moving picture was a blur. and there's also auto focus feature now. I can't stop using this lens now!! I have ZERO complaints. And I will NOT return it!

I would said that this lens would be good if you just started doing portrait photography. A good bang for your buck lens for sure.

I’ve been able to capture amazing picture with this lens. It’s super easy to attach and I have noticed a huge difference in the quality of photos I capture and they now require minimal editing

This is a wonderful little lens that gets the job done. Though I wish it could zoom, it works very well for me as an amateur photographer.
