You are correct, in order for the Solar Panel to perform optimally and deliver a trickle recharge to the Spotlight Camera's rechargeable lithium battery, the device does need sufficient sunlight. We are pleased to read that you found a wired device solution that is working well for you in your home's environment. The Ring Solar Panel and Super Solar Panel are designed to provide power for charging the Ring Stick Up Cam and Spotlight Cam. Which product is right for you depends on two important factors:

1. Number of Motion Events per day: If your Ring device is in an area that detects more events every day than average (defined as 10+ events per day) then your battery will drain faster and require more power or recharging more often.

2. Your Solar Environment: Warmer climates and areas that get less rain and cloud cover will get more kW of solar energy per day than rainier or cloudier zones. In such areas, having a larger solar panel may be a necessity for powering your Ring device.

In order to function as intended, please ensure your Ring Quick Release battery is fully charged prior to using the solar panel.

If your installation area is frequently very cloudy, this could limit the amount of sunlight that your solar charger or solar panel receives. The solar charger or solar panel does require direct sunlight, so filtered/indirect sunlight through the clouds would not provide a charge to your doorbell.

Also all our devices do come with a limited one-year warranty, in which Ring will repair or replace any Ring products that malfunction due to defective parts or workmanship, at no charge to you. There is also an extended warranty available through our Ring Protect Plus Plan option.

It sounds like your solar panel is not keeping your Ring device charged. With a few hours of sunlight per day, it should keep your device fully charged. The Ring Solar Panel can be mounted anywhere on a wall or roof, but it should be placed in an area that gets at least a few hours of sun each day. The more events captured by your Ring camera, the more your battery is used to power the live 1080p HD video stream to your device. To prevent excessive activity, you can adjust your motion settings to a lower sensitivity, disable certain zones, or change motion frequency to Regularly or Periodically. Ensuring the camera is set up properly within the Ring app and the solar panel is receiving enough sunlight is our top priority.
