    Too "smart" for me

My wife and I selected this microwave because it was the only convection/grill microwave that our store had in stock. We've had a combo microwave before and really liked it, and I emigrated from Europe where they are much more common than just regular microwaves because kitchens are usually much smaller than here in the US. The microwave itself works great; it was more powerful than our old borrowed microwave (long story) and it seemed to get food hot even faster than it was supposed to according to the times printed on the food packaging. But we almost immediately didn't like that the user interface tries to pretend that it's smart: It has many, many programs to prepare specific kinds of food, but running for a specific time in a certain mode at a certain temperature seems almost an afterthought in the user interface. It would have been much easier if the display would show text instead of just numbers (it took us a while to figure out that it was trying to say "2Sr" or "4Sr" for "2 servings" or "4 servings" instead of "25r"/"45r"). It would have been even better if there would just be a numbered key panel. The result is a great versatile kitchen appliance that's so complicated that I had to use the manual every time I wanted to use it. And I'm a software engineer! Besides all this, ours had a problem since Day One: After a few minutes of cooking, it would beep once or twice, then turn itself off, forget what it was doing, and show a blank display. Unfortunately it took us longer than the store-return policy to realize that it wasn't just telling us to turn the food over or something, it was really broken and it wasn't us. Samsung sent out a tech for warranty repairs so many times that I lost count. They replaced everything in the microwave circuit except for the HV transformer, and the problem was still there. Oh, and by the way, none of the techs were able to even start the microwave without our help. Eventually Samsung authorized an exchange and we got store credit from BestBuy (Thanks Stephanie, you were a great help!). We'll be using it to buy another microwave which is definitely not going to have a rotary encoder as main input device. A number keypad and a one-touch button to add 30 seconds or a minute are a must-have from now on. Whether our next microwave will have convection or grill, and/or whether it will be a Samsung, we don't know yet.

It is tempting to buy a big microwave with a ton of bells and whistles, but when I consider what I actually use my microwave for, this fit me perfectly. I purchased this microwave because I liked the pull-down door opposed a side door. As my first experience with a convection oven, I was impressed. I have used the convection feature for crisping my food items, and this oven does the trick. If you are not interested in a convection component, I would not recommend this microwave. As I currently understand the operation (I have not looked this up in the accompanying manual, so it may be an easy fix), I need to choose “microwave” first, then the amount of time in 30 -second increments, every time I microwave anything. Consequently, if I am cooking convection style, that button needs to be selected. If I just want to re-heat my coffee, I need to select the microwave button, then the time. If there is a way in which to make “microwave” a default setting in order to avoid needing to select it every time I use the microwave, I have yet to figure it out. Clock setting- This microwave makes it too challenging for what should be a 2- second process. Most microwaves you simply select “clock”, set the time, hit “clock” again, and that’s it. Not with this microwave. This is why I rated this product with 4 stars rather than 5. However, like many appliances and devices, once you get used to the operation, you will find it is great microwave. You will get an excellent product for the price.

While cooking with the convection function ours flat out completely died. What makes it even worse is all the garbage we had to go through to get a refund direct from Samsung. Yes you read that right. We started a repair ticket online. But every time we hit the submit button - their website crashed (useless). So... I started a chat session, was told they would arrange in home service under warranty. Got a call the next day said our ticket was canceled! Called customer svc, why was our ticket canceled - "Chat is not authorized to set up in home service". New ticket created was told someone would contact us within 48 hrs, and we would get an email with contact info. Email shows Lakes Electronics with a Gainesville FL. address Googled the address - returns a UHaul/Self Storage facility. Googled Lakes Electronics - returns a company in Pompano Beach Fl. Only 260 miles from Ocala. Called customer svc again. Told them what I had found and they had an error in their system. Again was told "someone will contact me within 48 hours". Long story short - THERE IS NO COMPANY AVAILABLE TO DO IN HOME REPAIR FOR SAMSUNG APPLIANCES IN OCALA FLORIDA. SAMSUNG GAVE US OUR MONEY BACK -- BUT ONLY AFTER REPEATED CALLS. IF YOU LIVE IN OCALA FLORIDA DO NOT BUY A SAMSUNG APPLIANCE OF ANY KIND AND EXPECT TO HAVE WARRANTY REPAIR IN YOUR HOME. (OR FOR THAT MATTER ANYWHERE THAT YOU WOULD/COULD TAKE IT TO.) IF YOU CURRENTLY ARE HAVING WARRANTY PCOVERED ROBLEMS - DO NOT HESITATE!!!! CALL SAMSUNG REPEATEDLY TILL YOU GET WHAT IS RIGHT.

Nothing is easy with this overcomplicated oven

If you are accustomed to 1-touch functions on a microwave, this is not the oven for you. To do something as simple as heating up a mug of water, you must first hit the "microwave" button, then dial the power level, then dial the time you want, then press start. It gets much more complicated if you want to use the convection functions or "slim fry" feature. Many of the functions, including choosing the power level which you must do every single time, require that you consult a table in the user manual. To reheat food, for example, you must select PL 80. Simmer is PL 60. Maybe I'll memorize these eventually, or ignore them, but why should I have to do this at all? If you use the convection function, it's just as complicated. There is a table of 14 convection power levels that correspond to different food types. Before you can use this feature, you must consult the table to find the most appropriate food type (P2 is Hamburger, P11 is Frozen Chicken Wings, e.g.). There are 2 different removable oven racks that come with the oven, and the table will also tell you which one to insert in the oven before cooking. Before you buy this oven, I strongly recommend viewing the user manual online and deciding whether the features of this microwave are worth the complicated processes and learning curve required to use it.

    Best Convection Microwave Out There

I recently purchased several models of microwaves, giving them trials to see which was the best unit. I tried convection microwaves from Breville, Cuisinart, & Samsung. The Samsung is definitely the best overall, and clearly superior to the other models. I could go on and on about all of the features of this microwave, but I will leave most of the details to the manufacturer & other reviewers. I will say that so far, everything has exceeded my expectations. The power convection cooks things quickly, and the results are impressive. The overall design and appearance is very sleek, modern, solid, and high-end. The controls are a dream- no more pressure pads to fuss with, just a sleek glass panel. I have seen some reviews stating that it is complicated to use, but, in my opinion, it is a breeze. It does require some thought, and settings must be adjusted to your specific cooking requirements, but seriously, look at all it can do. Yes, you should read the manual. Once the settings are learned, you quickly realize the incredible versatility of this microwave. I strongly recommend this model to those who want a very well built, solid, modern, versatile, countertop convection microwave. There is nothing better on the market right now.

For someone who doesn't like microwaves, I am definitely impressed and sold. Now I have owned microwaves before and stopped using them shortly after purchase because I didn't like them (an emerson that sparked, a kenmore that made loud awkward noises, a sunbeam that heated nothing, and a sharp that burned everything) I bought the microwave for the rest of my family to use, and I finally decided to give it a few tries. The sensor cooking is spot on for reheating leftovers. The pork chop was hot and still moist, the potatoes hot all the way through, and the beans still tender and crunchy. Love the light touch and the vertical door and child lock, it's also really quiet. The ceramic interior is a bonus for people who forget to cover saucy/oily food. The grill works great, no sparks so far, unlike my emerson. I guess the only thing I was kind of unhappy about was that it didn't play music like the washer/dryer, or phones lol.

The day after we made the purchase we studied the manual and attempted to learn the features. We started with the SlimFry. We set the power level but when we set the number of servings, the dial indicated 25r and 45r instead of 2 or 4 servings. We tried several other features and got similar results (from 15r to 45r) when we went to number of servings. We chatted with Samsung and the assistant finally wrote that we should call a repairman but since we had just purchased it, we instead returned it. The second unit did the same. A 4 hour phone call to Samsung resulted in no help because the serial number was not on the inside left of the unit. We searched the internet for reviews to see if others had the same issue but found none. Perhaps no one had tried to use the special features. We went to the store and checked the floor model. The serial number was not present on the inside either. Also, we plugged it in and it gave the same error codes for the serving level. We returned the oven and purchased last year’s model which has no issues.

    So Far So Good....

I bought this oven to replace another Samsung convection microwave that blew up just out of the 1 year warranty. This oven is very similar except for the black finish and glass touch pad. Things I liked better on the old oven was the handle to pull the door down was a real handle vs this one with kind of a tab for a handle that can be difficult to grab if you have large hands such as mine. I also don't like the fact you have to always push the microwave button first before using the quick 30 second setting for microwaving. The previous model you could just directly push the button and the oven would start. I would have also liked a color choice between black and brushed silver/stainless. Other than the nits I just picked the oven seems to work well and of course I love having the convection option. This model seems better built than the predecessor model I just threw out. I recommend with caution to longevity.
