Customers have good things to say about the picture quality, 4K capabilities, ease of use, and upscaling features of this Blu-ray player. Many also appreciate its price and streaming functionality. However, some customers point out performance issues and the lack of Dolby Vision support as drawbacks. The player's size and limited app selection have also received some negative feedback.
The Sony player offers excellent playback quality and a design that feels solid and high-end for a price that is around $299 depending on where you shop. The price and solid build make it a reasonable and robust Blu-Ray player. The UBP-X800 offers 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and is the latest disc-based standard, and it includes features such as 4K resolution (3,840x2,160 pixels) and better color depth. The Sony also offers support for HDR video in the form of HDR10, but not Dolby Vision. Format wars are never fun, but this one is shaping up to be a "DTS vs. Dolby" situation which means the two may happily coexist and have minimal effect on us, the end users. Among major TV makers only Samsung has yet to support Dolby Vision. We'll have to wait till the first discs arrive in June 2017 to test the efficacy of the disc format, but from what we've seen with streaming, the differences over HDR10 won't be drastic. If you enjoy streaming the UBP-X800's accent on streaming comes through from the Sony's home screen -- it's a grid of numerous streaming services and a single "disc" icon. The number of different apps the player offers keeps growing every time I turn it on and it now has over two dozen, including all of the crowd pleasers like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Pandora and Spotify. We're particularly pleased to see the inclusion of Mubi which is an excellent, curated movie service. The player offers 4K streaming from Netflix, Amazon and YouTube but only has HDR compatibility with YouTube at present. By contrast, the Samsung UBD-K8500 only offers HDR via Amazon Video. Smart TVs and dedicated streamers like the Roku Premiere+ typically have much better 4K and/or HDR app support. As far as disc playback is concerned the X800 will do 4K Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, CD and more esoteric formats like DVD-Audio and SACD. You can also stream content over a network and the player is "Hi-res compliant," meaning it will also do 24/192 and DSD audio formats. In conclusion aside from Dolby Vision (the UBP-X800 does not offer this feature), the Sony offers almost every conceivable feature you could want, and all of the video performance you'd hope for in a next-gen player. It's a close race between the Samsung and Sony, though, and the Samsung's more affordable price currently tips things in its favor. Bottom line: I like it and not only is it robust, it plays the next gen discs with ease and more importantly there is a WOW factor for the consumer.

Have had this unit about a month now and it performs great! Is very quiet while playing discs and has many streaming apps to choose from. The remote is a bit small but very functional. The buttons don't feel cheap. The player itself feels well constructed. Start time for playing discs is not long and the power-on time for the unit can be reduced by choosing to have the player in a stand-by mode instead of completely shutting off when you power off the unit. I have it paired with an LG 49UH6100 4K HDR television and it works well. It has played regular DVD's, Blu-ray and 4K HDR discs with no problem. Please be advised those who are looking that this unit has a coaxial digital output and no optical. Not a deal breaker for me for the $149.99 price I paid Thanksgiving week. This unit is also HDR10 and not Dolby Vision which again was not an issue with me because my television is HDR10 and not Dolby Vision. A great all around player and streaming device in my opinion.

The UBP-X800 was amazingly clear in resolution. It is a pleasure to watch. Very easy to set up and links to wi-fi with no problem. What really amazed me was the sound quality of my CDs. The simultaneous clarity of the various instruments showed a quality of sound I don’t think I have ever heard before from a reproduction. It was actually like being in the recording studio. Movie sound reproduction is just like a theater experience.
