The Sony UBP-X800 4K Blu-ray player offers excelle

The Sony player offers excellent playback quality and a design that feels solid and high-end for a price that is around $299 depending on where you shop. The price and solid build make it a reasonable and robust Blu-Ray player. The UBP-X800 offers 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and is the latest disc-based standard, and it includes features such as 4K resolution (3,840x2,160 pixels) and better color depth.
The Sony also offers support for HDR video in the form of HDR10, but not Dolby Vision. Format wars are never fun, but this one is shaping up to be a "DTS vs. Dolby" situation which means the two may happily coexist and have minimal effect on us, the end users. Among major TV makers only Samsung has yet to support Dolby Vision. We'll have to wait till the first discs arrive in June 2017 to test the efficacy of the disc format, but from what we've seen with streaming, the differences over HDR10 won't be drastic.
If you enjoy streaming the UBP-X800's accent on streaming comes through from the Sony's home screen -- it's a grid of numerous streaming services and a single "disc" icon.
The number of different apps the player offers keeps growing every time I turn it on and it now has over two dozen, including all of the crowd pleasers like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Pandora and Spotify. We're particularly pleased to see the inclusion of Mubi which is an excellent, curated movie service.
The player offers 4K streaming from Netflix, Amazon and YouTube but only has HDR compatibility with YouTube at present. By contrast, the Samsung UBD-K8500 only offers HDR via Amazon Video. Smart TVs and dedicated streamers like the Roku Premiere+ typically have much better 4K and/or HDR app support.
As far as disc playback is concerned the X800 will do 4K Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, CD and more esoteric formats like DVD-Audio and SACD. You can also stream content over a network and the player is "Hi-res compliant," meaning it will also do 24/192 and DSD audio formats.
In conclusion aside from Dolby Vision (the UBP-X800 does not offer this feature), the Sony offers almost every conceivable feature you could want, and all of the video performance you'd hope for in a next-gen player. It's a close race between the Samsung and Sony, though, and the Samsung's more affordable price currently tips things in its favor.
Bottom line: I like it and not only is it robust, it plays the next gen discs with ease and more importantly there is a WOW factor for the consumer.

Have had this unit about a month now and it performs great! Is very quiet while playing discs and has many streaming apps to choose from. The remote is a bit small but very functional. The buttons don't feel cheap. The player itself feels well constructed. Start time for playing discs is not long and the power-on time for the unit can be reduced by choosing to have the player in a stand-by mode instead of completely shutting off when you power off the unit. I have it paired with an LG 49UH6100 4K HDR television and it works well. It has played regular DVD's, Blu-ray and 4K HDR discs with no problem. Please be advised those who are looking that this unit has a coaxial digital output and no optical. Not a deal breaker for me for the $149.99 price I paid Thanksgiving week. This unit is also HDR10 and not Dolby Vision which again was not an issue with me because my television is HDR10 and not Dolby Vision. A great all around player and streaming device in my opinion.

The UBP-X800 was amazingly clear in resolution. It is a pleasure to watch. Very easy to set up and links to wi-fi with no problem. What really amazed me was the sound quality of my CDs. The simultaneous clarity of the various instruments showed a quality of sound I don’t think I have ever heard before from a reproduction. It was actually like being in the recording studio. Movie sound reproduction is just like a theater experience.

Sony - UBP-X800 - Streaming 4K Ultra HD 3D Hi-Res Audio Wi-Fi Built-In Blu-ray Player. I hated to have to shell out $199.00 for another DVD player but it's 4K so there you have it. For what it's worth my first Sony DVD player was $499.00 and had more going on. I upgraded to Blu Ray in 2009 and paid about $50 more than I paid for this so I should be happy to have such a great bang for the buck. Then again, I don't have a 3D 4K HDTV to see it really do what it can do either.

The Sony UBP-X800 Ultra HD Blu-ray player is what you want to use to get the maximum benefits out of your 4k tv. It will allow you to stream 4k content from Netflix and Amazon, and plays all kinds of discs with all kinds of file formats. It will play 4k Ultra HD blu-ray movies, 3D blu-ray movies, standard DVD's, and cd's with music, video, and/or audio files.
For lesser quality movies (dvd's and standard blu-ray's), it will upscale them to improve their quality. This is good right now because the ultra blu-ray movie selection is still on the small side.
The player is easy to set up and can be integrated with any home theater system. If you're just using it with a tv, it is a simple HDMI connection and you're done. It provides separate HDMI outputs for audio and video for those who are using receivers in their setup.
A cool feature is that you can output sound to your home theater and to a bluetooth speaker at the same time, so if you're in another room or far away from the home theater speakers, you can hear more clearly.
The UBP-X800 comes with some built-in apps, but they are relatively few. Hopefully Sony will update and add more in the future. The bare bone essentials are there though, such as Netflix, Amazon, Pandora , Hulu and a few others.
The machine is quiet and feels quite sturdy. The feet have incredible grip so the machine isn't going to slide or vibrate during use. It is a full-size unit that will fit in a component stack if you have one. Overall I really like this unit and would recommend it to others.

Review is for "Sony - UBP-X800 - Streaming 4K Ultra HD 3D Hi-Res Audio Wi-Fi Built-In Blu-ray Player". I bought this one for $150 Black Friday price. And I'm very satisfied with it. The functionality, picture and build qualities were all written about by many so I won't repeat.
I like some features on this Sony that may not be present in others.
1) it has 2 HDMI outputs. This is useful if you still have a non-4K receiver and not ready to upgrade. The 1st HDMI is connected to TV directly while the 2nd HDMI out connected to the non-4K receiver, eliminating any 4K pass thru concern.
2) It can play DVD-Audio disk. This is a huge plus if you still have DVD-A disks like I do. It plays very well like my older Denon. It's getting harder to find used DVD-A players
3) It also plays SACD, useful for the same reason as above.
All in all, excellent 4K player for the value.

My cousin retired from Sony after 30+ years. He told me Sony used to take pride in their products but now they have gone to nothing great. He said not to buy any of their things anymore because it is cheap and poor quality. When I went shopping for a blu-ray player, one of the employees convinced me to buy this product even though it would go against what my cousin told me. It worked ok the first 3 months. It’s very slow on booting up. After a few months it started glitching. It would freeze up completely. I would have to unplug it and plug it back in. This started happening once a day to a few times a day. Then the remote wouldn’t turn off the player or the player would remain on and can’t be turned off. Now, after about 10 months, it turns on but it only displays the Sony logo on the screen. It does nothing else. I can not watch anything. Useless. Taking it in today to see what can be done about it. Should have listened to my cousin and I would have never spent so much money on the thing and have all these issues.

The 4K Blu-ray Player You've Been Waiting For
|

I purchased a new 4K OLED TV last year, but I was hesitant to get a new 4K Blu-ray player due to the lackluster reviews of last year's models from other name brands. Sony has always delivered top-notch performance in its Blu-ray players, and this one was well worth the wait.
PROS:
- Sturdy, premium build quality. It may seem like a minor thing, but this player is built like a tank and doesn't feel like a cheap plastic box (like most Blu-ray players). The rigid build quality and understated design is certainly welcome to those who prefer a tidy home entertainment center.
- Quiet operation. I can't hear any noise coming from the player during playback.
- Extremely quick and responsive. Honestly, I've never experienced a disc player that loads discs and responds to commands from the remote so quickly.
- Dual HDMI outputs. HDMI 2 is reserved for audio-only output. Perfect for those with older soundbars or receivers that can't pass through an HDR signal.
- Perfect picture quality. I've tried several UHD Blu-rays, 3D Blu-rays, regular Blu-rays, and even some old DVDs. All look stunning. For UHD Blu-rays, the player automatically engages the HDR mode on my TV without me having to do anything. Regular Blu-rays and DVDs are upscaled almost flawlessly. The player has given new life to my movie collection.
- Wide selection of streaming apps, including Vudu, YouTube, Netflix, and Amazon. A recent firmware update enabled HDR playback via the YouTube app, which is very convenient since my TV's built-in YouTube app does not support HDR.
- Tons of options and settings for videophiles and audiophiles. The settings menu is very extensive and should satisfy even the most discerning home theater enthusiasts.
COULD BE BETTER:
- Initial set-up is straightforward, but you'll likely have to tweak some of those advanced settings to get this player to work seamlessly with your TV and/or receiver. For example, it wasn't immediately obvious that I had to go into the audio settings and turn off the "mixing" setting to get the player to bitstream audio to my soundbar. I also had to manually enable the HDMI 2 audio output in the HDMI settings. It's too bad these things aren't included in the initial set-up wizard when you first power on the player - but certainly not a deal-breaker.
- This isn't necessarily a fault of the player, but make sure you're using new high-speed HDMI cables that support UHD and HDR. Look for cables that are "certified premium" to ensure maximum compatibility.
- With Dolby Vision becoming more and more popular, I hope Sony will decide to support the technology via a future firmware update.
OVERALL:
If you've been holding off on a 4K UHD Blu-ray player for your new TV, the wait is over -- Sony has delivered arguably the best Blu-ray player yet, and certainly the best value for your money. If you buy the player by June 30, you'll also get a coupon for 2 free UHD Blu-ray movies from Sony. This is a hard deal to pass up. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Good 4k DVD Player, but has a software glitch

I did a fair amount of research on 4k dvd players before I purchased this unit. I'm not a fanatic when it comes to audio/video set-ups, and tend to look for value based technology. This unit was pretty even with another manuf. product, however, the Sony edged it out with its Dolby Atmos. They both lack Dolby Vision. Thus when BB offered this product at half price over the holidays, it clinched the deal. The reason I gave it 3 stars was because during the set-up, I ran into a problem with trying to update the software via my network. I kept getting an error saying "this device is not connected to network" when in fact it was. After two trouble shooting calls with Sony, they noted that because my units software was up-to-date, it wouldn't connect to "their" network. But the error on the unit was suggesting that the problem was with my network. Based on what I've seen on Sony's message boards, this problem has been around since it's launch. I would think that this should have been resolved by now. I'm surprised that more reviews didn't reflect this problem.

Blu-Ray Beast Mode

With 4K Blu-Ray players starting to enter the realm of affordability, I was eagerly watching CES to see what Sony would bring to the table. Recently, the X-Box One S has been touted as the best multipurpose 4K UHD player since you could play not only movies but X-Box games. While I do have a One S and have used it for UHD playback, a few things bothered me: Lack of advanced video options and no upscaling of 1080p Blu-Rays to 4K.
Then Sony released the UBP-x800. It was love at first spec review. This thing is a beast of a machine and boasts the typical Sony advanced video options that have been part of Blu-Ray players and PS3 / PS4 for years. Additionally, it also upscales existing Blu-ray Discs to near UHD quality. Since Disney, and Marvel, for some reason aren't on the 4K UHD train yet, this has been the best way to watch all my Marvel movies and Star Wars movies as well.
But that's just the beginning - the construction of the deck is weighty and sturdy. Whereas most DVD / Blu-Ray players have been going more flat-boxy in their design, the UBP-x800 is designed with an eye for not only detail, but the fact that this has some horsepower under the hood.
The back of the unit features a wired ethernet port as well as a dedicated HDMI-out for audio only for higher-end systems. I used the single, combined HDMI video/audio out for my system and it worked like a charm.
For comparison, I loaded up a Blu-Ray of Avengers: Age of Ultron and a 4K-UHD Star Trek: Beyond. First off, I could certainly tell that Avengers was an upscaled image versus the Star Trek image. That being said, the quality was flawless in both cases. I had to update my TV settings moving from an X-Box to the x800, but I’d expect as much.
If you’ve been on the fence about moving to a 4K UHD player, then the Sony also includes 3D compatibility, so you’re covered on all fronts of physical media. The x800 also includes cloud TV / movie service integration from Netflix, Hulu and several others. We currently don’t have an internet connection strong enough to stream 4K content from Netflix or Hulu, so I can’t really comment there.
Pros:
* Made by Sony - parent company of Blu-Ray
* Dual-HDMI out options for higher end systems
* 4K UHD, 3D and Blu-Ray Upscaling support
Cons:
* Nothing that I could think of in terms of a physical player
Overall:
If you’re in the market for a great 4K UHD player, then you owe it to yourself to check out the x800. It provides solid performance without breaking the bank in terms of cost. Also, mine came with an offer of 2 free 4K movies from Sony with purchase, so there was an additional $50 savings there too.
