Understanding the benefits of HDMI cables.
HDMI stands for High-Definition Multimedia Interface. It is a global industry standard for connecting high-resolution components — like a 4K Blu-ray player, cable box or PlayStation 5— to HDTVs, 4K TVs or home theater systems. HDMI-connected components communicate with each other to deliver video and audio formats that are mutually supported by your equipment. This allows HDMI cords to help you create optimized gaming set-ups and great home theaters with pristine picture and audio quality.
Unlike classic A/V cables, which use analog signals, an HD cable connection keeps data in an uncompressed digital format. So, if you are working with digital content on both ends of your connection, you will experience top-notch picture and sound quality when using an HDMI cable. Plus, other types of A/V connections require separate cables for audio and video data, but a single HDMI cord carries both data streams at once, reducing cord clutter.
Not only does HDMI accommodate existing high-definition video resolutions (720p, 1080p, 4K, 8K), but it has the capacity to support future technologies as well. This is why investing in higher end HDMI cables now that support 8K will pay off once the technology catches up.
Finding the best HDMI cable for you.
When choosing your HDMI cord, begin by looking at the ports on the devices that you want to connect. You may find a mini HDMI port on a tablet or DSLR camera and a micro HDMI port on smaller cameras or smartphones. Most televisions and large audio/visual devices will have standard-sized HDMI ports.
You can buy HDMI cables with different combinations, such as a standard end and a micro HDMI end. Or you can purchase HDMI adaptors. You can even find adaptors for some other combinations, such as a USB port and an HDMI port. Next, look for an HDMI cable that supports the resolution you use. HDMI cord stats will usually mention if the cable is intended for 4K or features like 3D. Some cables also include advanced features, like an Ethernet channel so devices can share an internet connection.
Finally, look for the length you need. You don’t want too much cable taking up space, but you also don’t want to come up short. Maybe shorter HDMI cables are all you need or perhaps your various devices require longer HDMI cables that can reach farther.
