Step-Through Electric Bikes

There are many benefits to using an e-bike for local travel and commuting. You can use your travel time to fit in some exercise while moderating your exertion with electrical assistance. If you are in the market for a new electric bike or your first e-bike, make sure you consider the differences between step-over e-bikes and step-through e-bikes.

The step-over design includes a high central bar that creates a triangle frame. A triangle is particularly durable from an engineering standpoint. However, it requires the rider to lift their leg up high to get on the bike, and it doesn’t work well for anyone wearing a long coat, skirt or dress.

The step-through bike was designed to accommodate more flowing attire. It’s also easier to mount a step-trough bike. The trade-off is that many step-through frames are made with heavier materials because the design does not include the triangle shape that makes the step-over frame so sturdy.

Like all e-bikes, the step-through e-bike falls into three classes. Class 1 e-bikes offer electrical pedal assistance up to 20mph, class 2 e-bikes offer an independent throttle so you can enjoy a break from pedaling, and class 3 e-bikes continue offering electric pedal assistance up to 28mph. Bicycles also vary widely in the kind of sitting position they support. Some create an aerodynamic position by lowering the handlebars, forcing the rider to lean forward, and others have high handlebars so you can sit upright.

The best step-through electric bike for you will be the class you want with the sitting position you prefer. Your best step through e-bike will also be the right size and weight for your needs. When buying any step-through bike, it is useful to try out e-bikes in person for fit and comfort.
