What is a self-balancing scooter?
A self-balancing scooter, also known as a hoverboard, works a bit like a segway. It operates using electric propulsion and is controlled by the tilt of your feet. Unlike an electric scooter, most self-balancing hoverboards are hands-free, but you can find some faster models that include handlebars to increase stability at higher speeds. The most common hoverboard scooter uses side-by-side foot placement, but you will also find some designs that place the feet sideways like on a skateboard.
You can choose a hoverboard for kids, which generally max out at speeds of 7mph, or you can choose a hoverboard for adults, which are capable of slightly faster speeds. Some of these models can offer a larger operating range or reach higher speeds on a single charge. You can also find hoverboard attachments, such as seats, to give you even more versatility in how you use your hoverboard scooter. Don’t forget to invest in safety gear and accessories, such as a helmet and protective knee and elbow pads.
Choosing the best hoverboard for you.
Choosing the best hoverboard for kids or for yourself starts with deciding what max speed and operating range you want. When looking at specs, note that many self-balancing scooters have weight and age ranges to ensure optimal performance. You will also need to decide if you want an electric hoverboard that can go off-road for a more adventurous ride. If you do, you might take along an action camera to capture the joy of the journey.
Finally, finding the right hoverboard for you will include identifying additional features that you might find important. Some boards have compatible apps that track your hoverboard’s charge or GPS position. Some have built-in Bluetooth speakers to enhance your ride. And of course, there are many aesthetic options, from the basic board to the full light-up hoverboard.
