Buying a telescope.

Benefits of having a telescope at home.

For many astronomy enthusiasts, having a stargazing telescope provides a close-up look at shooting stars and comets. But you don’t need to be an expert to explore the galaxy with your own home telescope from Best Buy. Depending on your budget and your viewing goals, we carry a large selection of refracting and reflecting telescopes to support your hobbies. You’ll want to select a telescope that has the ideal aperture for your subject, which is the amount of light that enters the lens to affects image sharpness. Another important specification is the power of magnification the telescope offers, which will determine how close you’ll be able to view the object. If you decide you want something more compact than a traditional telescope, monocular telescopes are a smaller alternative that can fit in a backpack. When you need a device for getting a closer look of the action during sporting events or concerts, Best Buy has a selection of binoculars that can give you a front-row perspective from several sections away.

Choosing the best telescope for you.

Your growing excitement for owning a telescope might tempt you to purchase the first one you see. However, instead of buying just any telescope, take the time to learn how to select the best telescopes for beginners and which ones are intended for more advanced hobbyists. Another aspect to consider is whether you’ll be able to transport your equipment to different places. Portable telescopes make it easy to explore the night sky from a friend’s backyard or an open field away from the city where there’s less light pollution. Regardless of what your interests are, we can help you find the best home telescope for your astronomical activities. We also carry supplies like lens cleaning equipment, so you can maintain and protect your telescope.

Reflecting vs. refracting telescopes.

There are two common types of telescopic optic devices: reflecting and refracting. The difference between each is the process of producing the images for viewing. Refracting telescopes are what usually come to mind when people think of telescopes. This type has a distinctive, long tube that starts wider at the lens and narrows as it moves toward the eyepiece. Since these stargazing telescopes tend to be more substantial in size, they aren’t something you’d want to move from room to room. Reflecting telescopes are often smaller and instead of a lens, they use a set of mirrors that bounce light off each other to create an image. Eyepieces on reflecting telescopes are mounted to the side, which some people find more comfortable than looking through a refracting telescope. Both types of telescopes can be placed on a sturdy tripod to provide stability and make your telescope a nice focal point in your home.
