Understanding the types of modems.
A modem is the device that allows your home to access the internet. You can connect computers and tablets, TVs and other devices directly to the modem by using ethernet cables. However, it is most common to hook up a router, which will create a Wi-Fi signal throughout your home.
Cable modems plug into the cable TV line, meaning that you can bundle internet and cable TV services together. Meanwhile, DSL modems use telephone lines. DSL connections cap out at slower speeds than cable connections do, but they are more widely available. The fastest internet connection available uses fiber-optic technology. Fiber-optic cables send light-based signals, so information travels at light speed.
Finally, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) modems are not differentiated by the way they connect to the internet but rather by how they incorporate an analog phone line. A VoIP modem pairs an analog telephone adaptor with either a DSL or cable modem, allowing you to hook up a landline phone to the internet without having to purchase a separate VoIP telephone adaptor.
Deciding between cable, DSL or VoIP modems.
Many cable and internet companies rent out modem devices as part of your service fee, but if you want more control over your technology, you can purchase a modem and router yourself. Obviously, you will want to start by deciding on the kind of internet connection you’ll be using.
Depending on the layout of your home, you may also want to invest in a Wi-Fi extender or in mesh Wi-Fi routers, both of which can help you bring a better Wi-Fi connection to far corners or rooms of your home. Not sure which is right for your home? Read over tips for choosing between a mesh router or Wi-Fi extender to figure out which is best for you. A powerline adapter can also quickly convert electrical outlets into useful internet connection points.
Choosing the best cable modem, DSL modem or VoIP modem often comes down to balancing what’s available in your area with your budget and your connection needs. If you have a small business or work out of the house, it may be useful to look at VoIP providers. If you want cable TV, start seeking out internet and cable bundles. Whatever you choose, you can always turn to Best Buy for your home Wi-Fi setup and wireless networking needs.
