The resolution and picture quality of this player is awesome! I'm a big movie fan and 4K is a must have for me. I bought this on sale and I'm glad that I did. There's not very many apps but it does have Netflix,YouTube, and more. You can also add more apps. I'm very pleased with this purchase.

There are other players out there for cheaper, but this one is so good. Makes DVDs and Blu-Rays look amazing on a 4K. If this thing could play old VHS tapes, it would look great. Not disappointed in the least.

This is my first 4k blu ray player. Loading time is fast. 4k blu rays really look great. Also does a fine job upscaling standard blu ray. Solidly built, not plastic. CONS: Every so often, it glitches/pauses when using Wi-Fi to steam. Common complaint with this machine.

This is a very good 4K blu ray player. Quality construction (not flimsy plastic like others). It is perfect if you have a slightly older AV receiver that doesn't support things like HDR passthrough as this player has TWO hdmi outputs, one can go to your tv and the other can send audio to your receiver. This is how I am using it. I'm not giving it 5 stars because its APP options are limited. No hbo go, no CBS all access, and really no way to add apps beyond what is already there. This isn't a huge deal, but why can't I access the Sony Store to try and get more apps?!!! I can do this on my Sony ps4 pro, so seems very odd to me that i can't do this on my Sony 4K blu ray player. Also, doesn't come with any HDMI cables. Really? That's kind of cheap of Sony considering how much you are spending on the player. Otherwise, great picture, and easy to use. Glad I got this!

The Sony is an excellent 4K player. The 4K picture quality is excellent as well as the sound quality. Another positive is that it is not plasticky, is mostly metal and weighs like a high end device at an affordable price. The upscaling of blue ray disks is amazing!
Unfortunately, I had to return the X800 due to the unit's inability to work with the Dolby Vision HDR format, only HD10. That is also the reason why I deducted one star. If Sony had indicated they would support DV with a firmware update as I originally thought, I would have gladly kept the unit since I own an LG OLED that is compatible with both Dolby Vision and HD10 HDR. Initially, there was some hope that Sony would support DV for the X800 but further research indicated that may be only true for the X1000es. In the interest some future proofing, I had to make a decision.

I recently purchased a new home entertainment system. I got a Sony 4kTV and a PS4 Pro. I wanted a true 4K DVD player. I didn't want an X-box or upscale dvd's from the PS4 Pro. I am glad I got this player. It plays everything great. 4K movies are amazing and even old school non blu-ray discs look good (paired with the Sony TV mind you). I am glad I got this. Works great right out of the box. 1 power cord, 1 HDMI cord to the TV, 1 Toslink cable from the TV to my soundbar. Simple set-up, works perfectly. I only use this for playing movies and CD's. I do not use any of the other features because the Smart TV does that just fine.

This is the #2 rated Blu-ray player right now. Sandwiched between two higher priced Panasonic's that I couldn't see were worth the much higher price tag. This does not have Dolby Vision, but it does have HDR10. The top choice Panasonic does have Dolby Vision, but costs 4 times more. If you want a 4k player now and you want the best player for the best price, this is it. It doesn't have a display, so if that's a hang-up, get the x1000. Personally, it doesn't matter to me, especially at $149.

I really liked the build quality of the unit. Seemed to be very well made. Played 4K UHD Discs with Dolby Atmos to my soundbar. My only problem was getting Dolby Atmos from Vudu and Netflix. I never got it to work when streaming from Sony x800. I had this unit going to HDMI 1 of my Dolby Atmos Soundbar. Soundbar HDMI(Arc) to Samsung Q6FN TV via HDMI(Arc). I was getting the 4K UHD Video from both Vudu and Netflix, but Audio was not Atmos. I know that the x800 does not have Dolby Vision but it does have Dolby Atmos. The x700 has both for cheaper. Also the x800 is not listed as a compatible device with either Netflix or Vudu. The x700 is listed as compatible with Netflix. I was tempted to try the x700 but decided to return the x800 and wait a while. I found out on internet that there will be a NEW x800 coming Model: x800/M2 which will have both Dolby vision and Atmos. The current x800 will not be updated with a firmware update. I have had Sony DVD Players for many years because I had a scratched DVD that would freeze up on previous DVD Player, and the Sony would keep playing the DVD even with scratches. Now I haven't tested that lately. Just never had to worry about it after I got the Sony. Also with Samsung not making DVD players any longer, the market just got bigger for the other manufacturers. Just got my 4K TV Christmas 2018 and was just beginning to purchase 4K Disks. I hope they keep producing those too.

A Good Machine With Minor Issues

I had been waiting for Sony’s release of their 4K player. I have had many Sony products from camcorders, TVs, blu-ray players, etc. The player works well on multiple formats.
I still play a lot of standard definition DVDs simply due to the programs were originally recorded on video so a high definition version will never be available, or other programs that have not yet been released in an HD version and may never be released in HD. So it was important to me that I be able to watch high quality HD content as well as standard definition content. Standard definition content looks very good and having a 4K system helps because the picture can scale better without getting too blocky.
I already have several 4K movies to watch. The picture on the 4K films is excellent. The quality is more apparent on newer material compared to older material. For example, watching the original ghostbusters has a lot of grain, but of course, the video is only as good as the source material. Seeing grain in film is expected and varies based on the film stock that is used. Newer films come out very sharp. If you are looking to get the best experience, then you will want to get the 4K films.
1080 HD blu-rays look exceptionally good too. I have to admit, sometimes it is hard to tell the difference between the blu-ray and the 4K blu-ray. Some people don’t see a difference and others don’t care because it still has an excellent picture. I expect you will be very pleased with the experience regardless of the source material format.
The player is also compatible with a large variety of disc formats, which is important to me. I do play DVD-R, DVD+R material on my machine and it plays fine. It also says it is compatible with super audio CDs. I have some but I have not actually tried it yet.
While I recommend this machine, the following is a list of minor issues. I am on the latest firmware update, but these issues currently exist
1. Sometimes when playing an SD 4:3 dvd, it will display in a stretched widescreen mode, even though the machine is configured to play it as a standard 4:3 format. To fix the problem, if you stop the DVD and then press play, the disc will restart with the correct frame size. It would be nice for Sony to fix this bug.
2. The machine has 2 HDMI outs, but only one of them supports video. The second port is audio only. It would be nice to have a second port that handled video. My old Sony blu-ray had a composite video out that I sent into the kitchen to an old tube TV that still works fine. This makes it nicer to watch something while cooking while the same thing is playing in the living room next to the kitchen. To do that with the new player, I had to buy a 3rd party HDMI splitter that also supported 4K to allow watching 4K on the main TV and still allow me to watch in the kitchen too.
3. The player is much slower to boot up than my old player. I haven’t timed it, but I would guess it takes 20-30 seconds after pressing power before it can actually play something. My old sony blu-ray was probably less than 10 seconds.
4. The unit does not have any display except for a small green power light. I find that annoying. I like to be able to look at the player and see the time into a film. The display also would usually tell you what the machine is doing. With this new unit, there is no display at all. You must use the display button on the remote to see any information such as the current chapter, time into the film or remaining time. It appears that they just went to make it as cheap as possible which is why there is no display on the unit and minimum possible of output connectors in the back.
5. The remote looks almost identical to my old Sony blu-ray remote, however they have moved around the buttons. I don’t know why they decided to move the buttons, but I am still getting used to it. The problem is that sometimes I will try to hit the display button, but it is now it is the stop button, so I stop the disc instead. Similarly, the fast forward button is now next chapter and likewise with reverse. I just find this a bit of an annoyance because I still use my old blu-ray player on a different TV so I have to keep being careful about which remote I am holding.
6. While the player lists many different supported file formats, I have found it doesn’t work exactly as advertised. Just last night I plugged in a drive to play an MP4 file and the Sony player said the format wasn’t supported. So I had to plug the drive into my LG OLED 4K TV and it directly played the same file without any problems. I haven’t experimented with many other formats yet, but it appears they still have some bugs to work out.
Apart from these minor annoyances, the machine works well.

I got this bad boy a few days after getting a 65X930E. This should almost be a must have to go with any TV with HDR. The movie library will catch up soon and the movie pricing will go down. Watching a movie in HDR reminds me of seeing HD for the first time. Everything pops. Even the most boring scenes in previous viewings become something that you pay attention to.
The actual player is pretty bland at the moment. Basic menus and very little apps. Apps did not factor in my review though because if you have a smart tv or a fire stick, then why would I ever use them?
The dual HDMI output was key for me because my Denon Atmos receiver does not support HDR. Hooking up a second HDMI to my TV is only a minor inconvenience when you hear Pacific Rim in Dolby Armos.
The actual player looks awesome on my TV stand. An awesome black box that was heavier than I expected, but the performance matches with the look and is just fantastic.
Also if you get one in the next couple of months, you can register to get 2 free 4K BluRays from the Sony picture store. Nothing amazing, but I picked up Angry Birds for free and it looks ridiculous.

I bought an exspensive Panasonic to start with. Apparently, Panasonic has not worked out thier firmware problems since I would have DVD’s stop in the midle of playback. I even tried two units. I bought a Panasonic receiver many years ago and it was a great product. I can’t say anything good about the DVD player. I took the Panasonic back and bought this Sony. No firmware problems and the picture and sound are what you would expect from this unit. The only reason for four stars instead of five is there are short pauses duribg some older DVD’s. It seams the 4K products have issues at times during playback of some older DVD,s. I have had no luck obtaining information from Bestbuy personal on this issue.

I have a home theater in my basement, with a 106" screen (yes... nearly 9 FOOT screen)... and a HD projector setup. Had it for over 10 years now. I'm also a budget audiophile. My old HD projector was on its last legs, so I finally upgraded. Part of that required also getting this BD player (and matching Sony AVR)... needed because my new projector was HDMI (old one was DVI). I had a good BD player, which was fine. Also had a separate Panasonic DVD player that exclusively handled hi-res audio (DVD-A and SACD player)... but it was analog out only... which meant 6 pairs of analog wires (five channels plus sub). This player eliminated 2 players, and dozens of cables. AND, it handles all my movie discs, with better resolution. And also plays all my hi-res audio discs... and it sounds BETTER now.
My projector is 1080p (not 4k)... so I cannot speak to this player's 4k ability. But BD discs look so much better now, even at a "lowly" 1080p.
I also have not used its 3D capability yet. I will update after I get my 3D glasses and watch a few 3D movies.
Most people don't care about hi-res audio... but if you do, this is a player you should try. I think its spectacular, and it won't cost you much to audition it for yourself. It handled every one of my DVD-A and SACD discs, flawlessly.
Please note, I am NOT a Sony fanboy. But this player is simply excellent. I'm old and jaded. But this player has absolutely breathed new life into my theater, and my hi-res audio collection. And its a terrific bargain.
If you're on the fence, give this player a shot.

I went from Sony BDP-S580 BluRay player. Was impressed at speed of the UI over the older player. Fully loaded. Spect to spec seems to be priced better than Samsung and other 4k player competition. Looks very much like, built with similar quality of the high end version that Magnolia offering ($600+ with not much more to offer, not worth it compared to this $149 frankly) . My 4K movies play phenomenally well when paired with Sony XBR-65A1E OLED TV. While built well, seems unnecessarily large compared my old unit. When using the USB input on the front, it can block the IR which is a bit annoying depending on how you have your set-up arranged. Otherwise very good buy!

I bought our Sony model UBP-X800 4K Blu-ray player along with our Sony model XBR65X900E 4K UHD tv. The Blu-ray player was a snap to setup. When you initiate it, it guides you through the setup process. We don't yet have any 4K movies on DVD but I expect that will change with Christmas coming up. We do have a bunch of standard definition dvd's and to our eyes, it appeared that the images were even more vivid and clear to watch than our old standard def dvd player. Very happy with this purchase.

This is my first 4K Blu Ray player. I wanted 4K blu ray player that would do a good job upscaling my old DVDs and Blu Rays. It does an excellent job upscaling my old DVDs and Blu Rays. More so with Blu Rays giving them the additional contrast ratio and pop the image needs. My first 4K image demo was also awesome with the Blade Runner 4K blu ray, movie almost looked brand new and first time experiencing all the HDR hype. I till prefer watching blu ray discs over streaming any day.
