Outperforms budget 4K players - Sony vs Samsung

I owned the Samsung UBD-K8500 for almost year before deciding it was a poor 4k player with several issues. I have been very Samsung-biased for years, but the last Samung 4k TV and player I owned have changed my mind. I decided to try this Sony x800 player and am happy to report that all the issues I had with the Samsung 4k player are not present in the x800. For reference, I have an LG OLED55C6P TV. Issues with the Samsung K8500 NOT present in the Sony x800 - 1. Audio sync issues After multiple hdmi cables and audio sync setting attempts, it became apparent that every time I paused a movie and resumed, the audio was out of sync, forcing me to exit the application or go back to the main menu of a disc to re-sync. Occasionally, the audio was out of sync from the start. The Sony audio is always in sync. 2. Annoying apps - The Samsung hardly has any apps available, and has a very poor menu setup. You cannot customize your favorite apps, which means you have to go into the applications menu and dig out the one you want to watch, every time you want to watch it. The Sony has more apps to choose from, they load faster, and you can quickly and easily customize your main apps page. 3. Video and audio drops - The Samsung would intermittently have video and/or audio drops, about twice a month in my casual viewing. It was not the hdmi cable as I tried 3 different brands of hdmi cables and 2 different 4k TVs, and the same dropped video/audio issues persisted. The screen would go blank for 2-3 seconds and come back, or the audio would drop for 2-3 seconds, come back, and be out of sync. Sometimes it wouldn't come back on and would lock up, forcing me to do a hard reset (unplug the power). It happened with both discs and streaming. The Sony has not had these issues. 4. Color reproduction - The Samsung does a great job with 4k and 3D blu-ray colors, but leaves a lot to be desired on regular blu-rays and DVDs, even when attempting to upscale. Especially with the blacks and grays. I watched the blu-ray Arrival on both the Samsung and Sony players. The Samsung had a lot of crushed and pixelated blacks whenever there was a darks scene, like entering the alien spaceship, whereas the Sony smoothly weaved the colors together and created a sleeker, more colorful and eye-catching picture. Sony has better upscaling. 5. Remote response - The Samsung comes with a remote that cannot support a rechargeable battery, whereas Sony's remote simply takes AAA batteries. The Samsung also has a delayed response time to remotes. A solid 2 seconds of delay creates a lot of frustration when you are trying to fast forward or chapter through a disc, and end up going to far and have to try and retrace with the same delay. Sony's player has no remote delay and instantly responds to every button command. 6. Build quality - The Samsung is lighter, which makes it feel cheaper. It has a flimsy tray. The Sony is very solid, and has a sturdy tray. The Sony x800 is a great player and outperforms the Samsung UBD in every way that is important to my needs.

This UHD BluRay Player from Sony is definitely one of the best I have seen and used. The picture quality is amazing and it fully utilized every feature of my Samsung 8 Series TV. HDR is lifelike and the crispness of the picture is second to none. My only complaints concern the antiquated user interface (UI), the size of the device itself, and lack of apps. The UI hasn't changed much, so if you already use Sony Blu-Ray players it will be very familiar to you. It only offers apps about 18 apps: YouTube, Hulu, Spotify, OperaTV, MLB.tv, Crackle, VUDU, Nextflix, Amazon Video, FOX News, Pandora, YuppTV, WW Network, MUBI, iHearRadio, Slacker, SirusXM, and Berliner Philharmoniker. It is solidly built and built to last. It has Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, HDR, 2 HDMIs (1 Input and 1 Output), Digital Coax Out, and a LAN port. It features 4k Upcaling, Blutooth, and Wifi builtin. It is very heavy and quite big. It sticks out about an inch over my wall mounted shelf for the TV. Otherwise, it is nice. Performance is all I care about so if that is what you are after, it is a must buy. It plays well with my Samsung TV and Soundbar with no issues in my week of using it. I must recommend the UHD Planet Earth II Blu-Ray to fully appreciate your TV's capabilities. The Verdict If you are in the market, it is a must buy. If you have a Blu-Ray and are happy, maybe not so much for you.

Really wanted a 4K Blu-Ray player to complete my setup. Blu-ray works fine on my LG 4K TV however, if you have a 4K TV, you HAVE to have a 4K player to with it. I'm watching Planet Earth II in 4K at the moment and the combo of my TV, the 4K disc and this player, it's quite astounding to be honest. The color, depth and clarity are all on point and really make for a great viewing experience. The player itself is really nondescript looking. It's just a large black box with a little green light on it but it packs quite a bit in terms of functionality. Aside from playing UHD 4K discs, it plays Blu-Rays as well as DVD's. However, putting a normal DVD in here seems almost sacrilegious. This also streams HD audio however I don't listen to any of these so I can't really comment on this feature. As with any streaming device, this one will play the "normal" services like Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, etc. With Wifi and hard wired connectivity, it'll connect with no problems. Bluetooth is available as well so you can connect devices to the player as well. Really a great item to have and really is a must have for any 4K setup in your home. And if you don't have one of these, you should get one....and a nice 4K TV to go along with it :D

I purchased the Sony UBP-X800 blu-ray player about a week ago when it went on sale for about half of the original price. I caught it on sale for $149.99. When the unit hit the street, I had already owned an XBox 1 S, which is capable of playing 4K UHD discs. So, I waited patiently for this unit to go on sale. - LOL. I’m glad that I waited! Although I missed out on the two free UHD discs from Sony, the half off deal was WAY better. My player is connected to my Sony 75 inch 4K set. The picture has literally improved all for the better when watching UHD discs on the set. If you are a fan of high quality video, with excellent color definition and outstanding detail, then this is the player for you. Run and get this UHD player today! As for a quick comparison, I had lived with an Xbox 1 S for UHD playback for a while. I purchased the game console before the Sony UHD player came out. However, I had read that the Sony was better, but I did not feel the need to run out and get the Sony at MSRP. Besides, I personally “thought” (past tense) that the XB1S was a good player. UHD discs didn’t look bad, however the HDR levels left a wee bit to be desired with the XB1S. It was not until I connected the Sony UHD player to my set that I found out firsthand what I was missing. The Sony player makes the XB1S look like a cheap player when comparing the two. It was like someone was taking a veil off of the screen when comparing the picture quality of the two machines. For me, fine details, better color rendition, better contrast and deeper blacks were jumping off the screen. For instance, the movie LUCY in 4K UHD is a reference disc. I thought it looked pretty good on the XB1S. I was wrong. LOL. When I played the same disc, using the same picture settings, and the same HDMI cable, the veil was removed! It was like the actors were standing in front of me! Crystal Clear 4K goodness! Yep, you need to run and get this player now. LOL. Other discs turned out to be much of the same experience. I have a new love for my 4K set now. Turns out, the gaming console was holding me back. As for regular blu-ray discs, the upscaling is great. You will enjoy watching all of your movies again. As for the built in apps, it’s the usual Sony / Android fare. I personally run the apps through the TV set. YouTube and Amazon run fine on it. Get the player now. You won’t be disappointed. PEACE!

This Sony 4k bluray player has excellent quality picture output. The picture is very sharp and the sound is clear as it can be. We watched some disney movies and they looked and sounded excellent. This player supports Bluetooth audio and can pair with a headset for private listening. Great for when you want to watch movies late at nignt. It quickly paired with the bose headphones and sound was vey very clear, The upscaling from a 1080p disc was flawless and we couldnt see any delay or clarity issues. Solidly built hardware with excellny quality picture and video. Wish they would include an HDMI chord.

Purchased the UBP-X800 to go with a new 4K HDR TV. Wow! Beautifully smooth playback, no glitching or stuttering. Transport is quiet. Haven't heard the fan yet, not sure if the unit has gotten warm enough to need it. Remote is logical, initial setup was quick. This is my favorite kind of product... it just works, and it does so really well. The UBP-X800 caught my eye because not only does it play 4K and all the other video formats, it's truly a universal transport in that it also plays both SACDs and DVD-Audio discs. I'd been planning to buy an Oppo for quite a while, but when I saw the price on the UBP-X800 I decided to get it instead, and I couldn't be happier. Exceptional price:performance ratio. This is now my go-to recommendation for a disc transport for A/V systems. Wish I could afford to give one to everyone on my Christmas list!

The Sony 4k Blu-ray player is a perfect inexpensive (when on sale) entry level player. The picture it produces is one of the best I've seen, comparing it to the LG player. The reason for the 4 star rating is because unlike the LG player, it does not and will not support Dolby Vision. If your TV doesn't have Dolby Vision, not a big deal, this player is perfect, if it does, I'd opt for one that supports DV.

I was glad I picked up this 4K player on sale. Set up was fast, and easy as was the available software update. I was hoping for a good Black Friday deal on this, and was so happy with my purchase. For an all around media player, this does the job very well. Setting up Wi-Fi was a breeze, and I had my YouTube account up and running in a few minutes. I've only had this a few hours, but I am in awe of the build quality. It's a fairly hefty unit for it's size. I own DVD-A, DTS Audio, SACD and Blu Ray Audio discs. Previously I had an older Pioneer Universal DVD player that used Multi-Channel analog inputs to play the above mentioned discs(aside from the Blu Ray Audio version of Rush's Moving Pictures), and the sound quality was only okay. With this unit, connecting just a single HDMI cable, breathed new life into my DVD-A copy of REM's The Best Of REM In Time 1988-2003. Before it sounded fairly dull and the mix didn't seem to have any low end. Playing it on here, opened up the soundstage even more, being able to hear the kick drum, the bass strings, and every strum of guitar along with Michael Stipe's unique vocals. I can't say enough good things about this player. One of the best purchases I have made so far. It has played everything I have thrown at it without breaking a sweat. I know the OPPO 203 is a benchmark 4K unit, but at a fraction of the cost this is an absolute bargain. Whether or not you have a 4K TV, it's sill worth a purchase. Highly Recommended.

I bought this during Black Friday, so I received a significant discount. I watched a couple of 4K DVD's so far, and the picture and sound are exactly what you would expect. Certainly worth the money that I paid, but maybe not the MSRP that Sony is retailing these for. I say this for a couple of reasons; 1) There is no display (I knew this prior to purchasing) on the front of the unit. For the price point (retail), and the fact that it's the 21st century, any piece of equipment like this should include a display. 2) The other reason would be that (like others have pointed out) there is an issue with this unit freezing up. I experienced this when I activated the feature that enhances audio from non-4K DVD's. I'm still working through the feature list to see what I can/cannot enable that will cause this freezing issue. As others have indicated, the only way to fix the issue of the unit once it is frozen is to unplug it and then plug it back in. I'm sure Sony is aware of this and is working on a firmware update, but for the cost of the unit, consumers should really only be complaining about the lack of display, and not the unit not working as expected 100% of the time. I would recommend this unit if you understand that you may experience the freezing issue, and are somewhat confident that Sony will release a firmware update to resolve the issue.

I recently purchased a 4K HDR TV and wanted to enjoy some 4K movies. I purchased this Sony player to go along with my x900e and I must say that I am impressed. The player does everything I could want it to do as well as upscale lower quality DVD’s & BluRay discs. I have an extensive library of movies and this player has handled them all very well. The interface is simple but effective. The apps run well off the player if I do choose to use them. I also bought this on sale and used some rewards points, so for $169 it was a no brainer. It’s not an Oppo but it does what it does well. No Dolby Vision but at this point it really doesn’t matter.

1080p LG players are the best but Sony 4k Players seem superior. Fast loading time, great picture, remote is good, buttons are easier to use than the samsung, philips 4k player remotes. LG 4k remote is good, but has a weaker signal than the sony's. My next TV will be OLED not from LG, but from Sony for its lesser motion judder/flicker TV's than LG. Returned the LG 4k garbage player for this. This sony has more apps and the HDR worked for my KS8000, the LG did not. LG has terrible start menu and is all white and blinding on the eyes. Plus, this unit is MUCH heavier and seems more solid.. usually a sign of better quality. Quickstart function is great. Fanboys need not rate my post.

After reading some early reviews which seemed to pound on freezing issues, crashes, noise and functional issues, I decided to look over some more pricey units like the Panasonic units. The Sony does not have a display which would have been nice, nor does it support Dolby Vision, which is odd because the Sony 900E TV I purchased does. However, like many other units, the Panasonic units didn't support Dolby Vision either. When all was said and done, I needed a player sooner not later and didn't want to wait forever for the Panasonics to come down to a price I was willing to pay. When the price of the Sony unit was halved during Black Friday I jumped at it. The unit was easy to set up, considering it was just the TV and the player. The quality of the pictures are quite good. Both the TV and the unit are capable of upscaling so I'm not sure who gets the bulk of the credit for that. DVD's and BluRays both are excellent. We've only played 2 4K disks, Kong:Skull Island and Hacksaw Ridge, but both were outstanding. At this point though, I'm satisfied with lower cost BluRays over the more expensive 4K disks. I haven't experienced any of the issues that I've seen in reviews, but that's because I don't stream (senseless with a 1.5K download CenturyLink connection that is actually .8 on a good day), and I am content to use the player for what it was mainly designed to do.... play disks. I couldn't care less about other internet nonsense. That's why I have a laptop. I did have 2 problems since late November 2017. 1) A new DVD mysteriously locked up the unit and gave a message that the disk was scratched and unplayable. It would then not allow a Blu-ray disk to be played afterwards. I unplugged the unit from the outlet, let it "think about the bad thing it had done" for about an hour, re-plugged it and all was forgiven for the BluRay disk. The DVD was still unplayable and had to be returned to its source. 2) I inadvertently turned on the uber annoying function that vocalizes anything you do with a disk, such as "stop," "play," or "pause." I don't remember how I got it to stop but I spent way too much time playing with all the menus and going through too many on-line manuals. The price you pay for having too many functions that most people won't use is that when they go haywire, you spend a lot of time trying to iron them out. And these were just simple issues. Those were the only issues I had because I only need it to play disks, not manage my life or lifestyle. Overall, I got a decent unit for a decent price and I am satisfied with that. Recommend? Yup...

Have not watched one movie so far and no problems reading disc or displaying video and audio. Out of the box it required an update which took about 15-20 min to download and install with a 600Mbs pipe. Which is slow but not the slowest, the Xbox One S is twice as long to download and install updates so I’ll take it. Just glad to be able to stop using Xbox for movies. The other down side is this device is huge and heavy much like the very first Blueray players. You would think these manufacturers would shrink them down considering how compact and lightweight blueray players are now. The controls are very smooth and if you already have Sony blueray players you will be very familiar. Marginal delays from when you click the remote to when the screen moves. Overall I would recommend this device to anyone since it is Sony and that’s all I Pirchase for blueray. Let’s face it, they invented the Trchnology.

If it wasn't for the extra bonus points, I would be watching the Sony UBP-X800 right now. For the price on sale, this is the best 4K player for the money. The heft and solid feel alone inspires confidence of making a good decision of purchase. Aside from that, you will not be disappointed with the picture it can produce. I liked its capable HDR performance which is clearly noticeable. I did have some trouble with the HDMI connection, as my original cable could not handle the full bandwidth that this unit can deliver. I HIGHLY recommend shopping for a certified 18.2 Gbs cable or IT WILL NOT WORK with your old one. Or you can change to 1080 settings and not have the 4K performance. What good is that? It will play most all your digital discs without flaw. I have no issues with this unit and I expect this to last a long time.

I was able to pick this item up for half the price during BF sale. I was on the fence spending full price but jumped when I was able to pick it up on sale. This player is for all intent purpose just a 4K bluray player and because 4K is still a growing media market... prices have been pretty inflated. This SONY player is well built and should last over time until the Market switches to 8K which should be awhile. Aesthetically this player is larger than most DVD , Blu-ray Players on the market but will fit most consoles no problem. I have enjoyed watching movies paired with my 4K TV, which is needed in order to get TRUE 4K from any 4K bluray disc. It's worth the purchase but feel that had I payed full price I might be kicking myself for doing so.
